Jessalyn....I'm giving pumpkin right now to one of my furbabies. His name is Buddy. He's 18 yrs.old He was attacked by a raccoon where I live & I had to bring him indoors to nurse his wounds. His wounds healed but he developed old age problems. I'd heard & read about the use of pumpkin in helping cats go the bathroom easier. I've been mixing a little bit of water with the pumpkin (make sure it's the pure pumpkin in cans without spices. Spices are bad for kitties. Then I put the pumpkin & water in a sqeeze eyedropper & squirt it into his mouth (I try to keep it on the side of his mouth so he won't choke on it. I give that to him twice a day. Once b4 his wet food breakfast & once b4 his wet food dinner. You might want to ask your mom if she'll help you with it.
Buddy has been the perfect little trooper. And he's improving & I'm sure it's the pumpkin that's helping. Good Luck with Sammy. Don't give up the hope. If my old Buddy can beat this, maybe your Sammy can too. -
Jessamyn,
I am very sorry to hear about poor little Sammy. I admit that I know nothing about Manx Syndrome, but I do know something about spina bifida in humans. Assuming that this is similar, then the nerves that control the bowel and bladder do not work properly. If he is unable to voluntarily empty his bladder, then he will "leak" a little at a time as the bladder overflows. Urine sitting continually in the bladder becomes infected, and the infection can travel to the kidneys and damage them. Also, having a really full bladder does not feel good.
This site (http://www.handicappedpets.com/mediawiki/index.php/Express_a_dog_or_cat) discusses how to express the bladder manually. Ask your vet to show you how. In the meantime, does external stimulation as one does with tiny kittens work at all? If so, it may help make him more comfortable (sorry- I forget how old Sammy is).
This site (http://www.handicappedpets.com/mediawiki/index.php/Bowel_management_in_incontinent_pets) talks about stimulating bowel movements by gently stimulating the anus. Humans with spinal cord injuries also need a bowel program, and if done properly almost eliminates accidents.
Good luck Sammy!

It's good to read what you can, Jess, and ask your vet questions (or ask your mom to ask the vet questions for you) and understand what they say. Please let your mom know about us here on TDK so if she has questions she can ask them too. We are a family-friendly site here and you're pretty safe.
