SICK KITTY- PLEASE HELP

(24 posts)
  1. Hello everyone!

I just got a new litte kitty named Milo. He is estimated to be about 7 weeks old but he is a tiny little guy. When I first got home on wedesday night he was running and jumping around and being a happy little kitty. Thursday I noticed his eyes were a bit watery but he was still playing and running around. He was scared of his water dish but we have been giving him water and kitty milk with a bottle. I got him from an animal rescue...he has ad all of his vaccines, tested negative for feline leukemia and was said to be in good health. When I noticed him getting sick, I called the girl I got him from and she said all of the other kittens were healthy and its probably a URI but if hes looks any worse bring him to the vet.
Yesterday morning when I woke up, he looked so lifeless. He was just sleeping in a ball and everytime I woke him hed just fall back asleep. He was also shaking. We immediately took him to the vet...he had a 106 fever, low blood sugar, and an eye infection. We got some amoxil, eye drops, and smome nutra-cal. Yesterday afternoon he didnt look much better and being a worrier, I brought him to the emergency animal hospital. The vet was quite rude and was suggested running all of these very expensive tests, which I cant afford and even suggested putting the little guy to sleep even tho it was possible he just had a uri or kitty pneumonia.
I am very very worried about him. He is eating A LOT. He perks up when wake him and will play for a few minutes and then crawls back to bed. We had been giving him cold compresses on his belly and some rubbing alcohol on his ears to lower any fever he may have. He has had 3 doses of amoxil so far. I have another cat who is healthy and have made sure my other cat stays away from him and all of his things. Does this sound like it could just be kitty pneumonia or a URI? I am soo worried about FIP. He is NOT vomiting and has no diarrhea. He eats like a little pig. But he is just so lethargic and shaky. He is a teeny little guy..only 1.3 lbs. And Im so worried! Please help!

  2. This site might help you understand URI in kittens:

    http://www.sheltermedicine.com/portal/is_feline_upper_res.shtml

It sounds to me that you need to take the kitten to the first vet that originally saw him. He gave an antibiotic for a reason--what did he say when he discharged your kitten? When the shelter tested for FeLV didn't they also test for FIP--that is normally done at the same time.

Welcome to TDK--even if it is for an unhappy reason. May you find the answers you need to help your kitten.

  3. Thanks so much! Hes going first thing in the morning. Hew as very dehydrated so they gave him subq fluids. She said he prob has a URI or pneumonia but she was a little startled when they took his temp and saw his fever was 106. They would have kept him overnight but it was a saturday and everbody was going home. He did get tested for everything. I heard the FIP test was a bit unreliable. Tho he doesnt seem to have the other symptoms of FIP or even the panleukopenia (which he was vaccinated against). He just has the fever and lethargy. I was nervous he wouldnt make it through last night..but hes a little fighter so were hoping he pulls through. Hes sleeping on my lap in his little snuggie right now :)

  4. Well the fact that he's eating well is fantastic! However please don't use any more rubbing alcohol on his ears,he can absorb stuff through his ears and that stuff can poison him. Just wipe him down with a wet washcloth when he seems very hot but make sure he is out of drafts so he can't catch a chill. It's unusual for him to be vaccinated against everything so young, usually they just have their first series of shots by 7 weeks. That in itself could be contributing to his fever. So just keep your eyes on him,if he seems to be particularly unresponsive dab a little nutrical in his mouth. Continue to feed him as much as he'll eat. Try to get unflavored pedialyte and add it to his formula until his skin doesn't tent any longer. And take him to the vet in the morning like you've already planned.

  5. Thanks! Ok I will definitely stop with the alcohol..I only used it twice, but any type of poisioning is the last thing this little guy needs. I do think he was vaccinated a bit too young. Hes so tiny...the ad said 7 weeks...so now he should be 8 weeks but he is just so much smaller than I remember my other cat ever being. Can he be sick from the vaccines? He was vaccinated on June 4th. Hes just sleeping right now! Hopefully the vet can do something for him tomorrow.

  6. Hi MK,forgot to welcome you to TDK!!! Yes I've noticed after vaccinations my kittens tend to be sleepy and a bit warm although 106 is way too warm. Just keep after him with his feedings and make sure he gets enough fluid and take him back tomorrow.Hopefully that's all it is. Thanks for rescuing and looking after Milokitty so closely. Please let us know how both of you are doing anytime but especially after the vet visit tomorrow. We get attached to our people and their babies.

  9. Milo went back to the vet this morning. He was very playful when he got up and still eating a lot. However he still has a fever of 104. The vet did some bloodwork...which wasnt too revealing. He is a bit anemic but otherwise everything was alright. His wbc count is on the high end of normal, which is expected being that he has some kind of infection. She also took some blood to send out for FIP testing. Although I am really not too sure of the accuracy of that test. I know it just tests for the general coronavirus...but she said if it comes back very bright/very high levels then FIP could be a possibility but I really really really really hope that is not what he has! We are just praying that whatever he does have, he can recover from. He also got clindamycin, which is stronger than the amoxil he was on. Since returning home from the vet he has been playing all day...hasn't even slept once. He is eating a lot and keeps wanting more of his baby kitten milk...all good signs. I am trying not to get my hopes up too much...because things can change so quick but I am praying that it all works out! I will keep everyone updated! If anyone has any thoughts, suggestions, etc please post! Thanks :)

  12. Thanks everyoe! Id really like to give him a little bath...he is all sticky from the nutra-cal from the vet (he got it all over him while they were taking his blood) and his amoxli also left pink sticky spots all over him. He tries to clean them but its too sticky! Is it okay to give him a bath or not right now with how sick he is? Myabe I should just stick to a little washcloth?

Posted 1 year ago by milokitty #

  13. Yeah Maybe just a washcloth so he doesn't get a chill, poor baby.

  14. thanks! I had some cat wipes from my other cat I completely forgot about! Im about to go clean the little guy right now..hes so sticky still! But the good news is that he has been playning non-stop and is very energetic. The clindamycin seems to be helping. He is still not out of the woods yet..but these are good signs!
