Please reassure me.

  1. I am not sure if this is the right section, but I am worried and need some advice. I am 22, and my step father works at a vet clinic cleaning. Well, they recently had someone abandon a cat there who had kittens, so I took one home last Saturday. He has become a wonderful addition here and we love him a lot.

Well, I was told he needs to come into the vet today to get a booster shot. I am not sure which, which I will touch on if everything is alright. But anyway, I took him in, and he came home and was being his usual running off the walls self, and wore himself out and came to my lap to sleep.

After about an hour or so, he wandered off my lap and onto my desk, then back down and onto me, and wouldn't sit still. This seemed unusual. Then he jumped off and went to my door, which we keep closed because he is still too young to be playing with the other cats.

Then he was just lying on the floor, which again is unusual. What scared me is when he came to my feet, and normally he would leap up. He just sat there. So I picked him up and he started crying like I hurt him, and I got worried that I didn't something wrong! I examined him and whenever I touched his chest, he seems in pain or uncomfortable. At this point, I got worried a lot and moved him over to the bed.

There I grabbed a flash light and examined his chest more looking for scratches or something, I thought maybe somehow in a brief second he did something that I did not notice. I am certain he didn't, but better safe than sorry. After seeing anything, I called the vet. They assured me the booster shot they gave him was normal like this. He is going to be very tired, seem sick, that he needs to fight it off. I naturally got angry at this point, asking why I was not told this in the office.

I don't like this office to begin with, but since my step father works there, it was free, so I decided that what is the worst than can do with a shot? So I took their advice and listened, but I decided to come online and see if anyone else can verify. If this is abnormal, I want to get him proper care. I don't remember this with any of my other kittens, though I believe they had their shots after we got them.

So please, if someone can just put my worries to rest, that would be great, or at the worst, tell me that he needs medical care. I hope not...

  2. I was in a rush and forgot to mention, he is 10 weeks old, his name is Sam, and he is one of, if not the healthiest cat I have ever seen.

  3. Most kitties are a little 'off' their normal behavior after getting vaccinated. Give Sam a day or so and see if he goes back to normal. In the meantime, be gently watchful. Don't hover too much (if you can help it), give him space if he wants it, cuddles if he wants it, play if he wants it.

My bigger kitties always act a little odd when they come home from getting shots, but they go back to normal soon. Be sure little Sam eats and drinks and pees and poos like normal.

Good for you for worrying about your little man!

  4. I agree with Siobhan. Anytime mine go to the vet, and they love him, they are off when they get home. I would watch and wait. Vaccinations always make a kitten lethargic and off for a couple of days. They shake it off though.

  5. Welcome to TDK SySteve! I agree to give Sam a day or so to get back to normal, if he is still not feeling well at that time contact a different vet.

  6. Aw, that really put me to ease right there. Cats have always been my soft spot, I immediately bonded with him the second I saw him. So to see him acting like that, it got me really upset. What peeved me is how the vet never even said anything. Then again, I am aware of their reputation.

Thank you so much for the fast reply though, it means the world to me. I was on the verge of crating him and running off to another vet. I'll be sure to watch Sam very closely, of course keeping my distance. I turned off the television, and everything so he could have some peace and quiet. I'll make sure he is comfortable.

Thank you so much again! I worry easily when it comes to my kittens!

  7. Yay! Another kitty lover! Welcome to TDK, I hope you hang around for awhiole Systeve! How about taking the opportunity of a quieter kitten to take some pictures? We would love to see your baby Sam! He will have TONS of new 'aunties' here!

  8. Thank you everyone! Those replies came fast. I'll definitely be using this forum since everyone is so nice. It's nice to see some people care still.

I only worried because recently I lost a dog, and a cat, so I am overly worried about my animals, especially a new kitten brought into the house. You all really helped ease my mind and confirmed what the vet said. I have heard bad things about her, and I made sure she did not administer the shot to Sam. For anything more than a shot, I am taking him elsewhere, so I had to confirm she was telling the truth.

Oh, good idea! I did get a picture of him sleeping with my gaming setup, which I enjoy to do on my off days from work. It was adorable, because it was like he instantly bonded with what I like to do too. I'll get a picture up shortly so you can see the baby. :)

  9. I do have this picture of his first night here. I am not exactly sure if there is a way to upload pictures here yet, so I will do this for now. :)

  10. OOOHHHH A TUXIE!!! I love a man in a tux!! He is adorable!

Welcome to TDK--you have to submit his picture to KittenMaster so he can be a kitten of the day! He is sure to be a star!

  11. Wow there really must be something wrong with my kitten then. I read your post about how Sam is acting after getting his shot and it makes me wonder if Dusky is missing something up there. Other then being a little bit tired (he got his first kitten shot yesterday) he is just fine. He is being his normal, I'm gonna eat Jax (my big cat) and play with everything I can get my paws on self, lol

I really need to post a pic of my boys for you all to see :-)

  12. Oh, he's a cutie! Another tuxie! Squee!

What many of us do, is create a Catster page for our kitties, and then we can add that to our Wordpress profiles here on Daily Kitten. If you click on my name, you can see part of my profile and get links to my kitties' Catster pages.

  13. Like humans all react differently, kitties can react differently to their shots. What makes Sam a bit woozy might not affect Dusky the same way.

  14. Welcome and oh what a little darling he is!!!!! My 2yr. old cat got a distemper shot and he acted very lethargic also. I know the worry. It's so nice to see another new cat lover on TDK!

  15. Oh I love tuxies! My parents currently have a big tuxie (tho I don't know how much longer he'll last), and he's just the most awesome cat. Be prepared to have a giant cat on your hands!

  16. Welcome with purrs and headbonks to TDK/The Daily Kitten or?Tuxie Daily Kitten/just kidding! Yup, my kit Dot/dotted tuxie usually is pooped after her shots but then eats like a horse when she perks up! Crockey/cremesicle flamer usually acts like his normal self with his normal laaarge appetite!

  17. Yeah that is very true.

Sam is definetly a cutie :-)

  18. I just took several pictures of him sleeping, though not super close up. I didn't want to disrupt his sleep right now, he seems very out of it.

He is the most unique tuxedo kitten I have ever seen actually. The black chin, it's almost like an arrow, and the black dots on his nose are actually black dots. We thought he just had some big nostrils, but nope! I love him though, that was me sitting there with him and he just is all over the place, and me.

Thank you for that information though Siobhan :) I will definitely check that out!

Soxsmom, I will be sure to do that. :) I am still navigating around the site, figuring out everything. Everyone is so friendly here, it's nice!

I feel very welcome so I am going to be sure to try all of this and thank you for kind words everyone!

  19. JYMBERRY, I hope you don't have too hard of a time losing your kitty. I lost mine, who was...eleven I think, back in April to F.I.P. It was the most heart breaking thing I ever had to go through. He was a tuxedo, and when we bought him he was skin and bones, very sick, just on his death bed. Long story short, it took about eight years for me to get him comfortable enough that I could touch him. And he was a big boy! So, I know how big they can get and how hard it is to lose them. I wish you the best of luck with your kitty!

  20. Sounds like you're smitten with your kitten :-) That's a wonderful sign!

Posted 1 year ago by Siobhan #

  21. Oh I am! :) He does the cutest things, and is such a loving kitten, I can't imagine life without him now.

Though my original baby, who is nine years old now, he is not happy about Sam. I been trying to get him comfortable with the idea, but he refuses! Everyone here but him is happy!

  22. The vet certainly should have gone over post-shot reactions. Lethargy is common, as is tenderness at the injection site, which may explain why he didn't want to jump up to you. The vet should also have told you what to watch for in the event of an allergic reaction - shortness of breath & swelling in the face or any other part of the body.
He is probably ok, but it is advised that you keep an eye on him whenever shots are given for at least 24 hours.

  23. It'll be hard, but I'm actually kind of thankful I don't live with my parents because I think it would be unbearable if I had to watch him deteriorate. He's only 6 years old and was diagnosed with Lymphoma about 6 months ago. The vets are surprised he's lasted this long, but he's still going strong!

I rescued a baby tuxie girl last year that my ex now has, but she's giant now! I know I'll be adopting one in the future because I adore large cats

  24. JB have your parents give him lysine--it works to build the immune system to keep them stronger.

Posted 1 year ago by SoxsMom #

  25. Does that increase his life span or just make him more comfortable?

Posted 1 year ago by jymberry #

  26. Only six years old? Oh my god, that is horrible. :( I would be so heart broken over that. Like when they get old, you see that coming and can prepare, but wow...I feel very sorry for your parents and you. I had a cat diagnosed with brain cancer actually too, and he survived and overcame it. Miracles can happen, so maybe one will happen for you!

JOANFROMNEWJERSEY, that is exactly why I was so angry. They acted like, "Oh no big deal." Well, it was a big deal to me. Here I was worrying that maybe behind my back my kitten hurt himself or something, or that the shot was hurting him. They could have handled it so much better. But at least he is alright, and I will look out for those reactions!

Posted 1 year ago by SySteve #

  27. JB it will do both. It is a vitamin you can get in any store. Add it to food and it helps the immune system boost. With the boost in the immune system he is able to fight off the additional issues associated with Lymphoma. That allow makes him feel better.

  28. I'll definitely give them that info, thanks!!

  29. My tuxie boy is now 18 pounds! He is being treated for FLUTD--they think maybe. He didn't see any crystals on the urine that he got. Vet couldn't get the urine from him for 4 hours of trying. Took in my daughter Mini SM and Deuter peed on her! We got a sample though! He is perking up a bit though. My vet told me things to look for--trouble urinating, lethargy, not eating/drinking--that makes me feel better that we have good communication. It is hard when communication is lacking. Maybe you are the perfect person to teach this vet to open up and talk with pet owners. When he has to go back to the vet ask questions--the vet maybe reluctant at first so remind him he is supposed to be caring for your pet AND you the owner!

  30. I've never seen a little tuxie. Sebastian was bigger than Huddy is right now when he was in his prime (Huddy is 22.5 pounds). He was just HUGE. Your baby is a cutie Systeve. Welcome to TDK.
