  1. SySteve - hi! Welcome to TDK Chat :o) It's funny how cats can react differently to the same thing, two of ours are sisters, Pickle has a lethargic reaction to injections, Button (she's the one in my avatar) acts like nothing's changed.

I've picked up on the bit in your post about your older cat not being too impressed with the new arrival - here's a couple of tips :

Scent transfer - stroke one cat with a clean t-shirt or similar, then rub that shirt over the other cat, and vice versa. Gets them used to the new smell without any direct contact

Fuss & treats - lots of extra fuss and attention to your older cat, let them know they're still the number 1. Encourage both to eat treats together - stomachs will eventually overcome their dislike!

Feliway plug in diffusers. Feliway is a synthetic feline hormone that calms cats and helps in stressful/anxious situations. Used it several times ourselves, and it's really, really good

Look forward to chatting to you more - and seeing more pictures of Sam!

  6. Sorry for the delay, I was lying with Sam, making sure he is comfortable and warm. Thank you everyone for welcoming me and the information though! Very, very, very helpful and reassuring! :)

Sam I am sure will be back to normal soon and he can read the comments that were posted. He does like to sit in front of the monitor and chase the pointer around, and watch videos, so I can show him these too.

I did give Sam a treat after I had put him on the bed, and he has been sleeping since. But prior to the shot, he was eating, drinking, and going to the bathroom just fine. He eats a lot, so I am waiting for him to wake up to see what he will do with the eating.

  7. = ) what a cutie, babies never like shots. Looks like you have a healthy, handsome little kitty hope to see more pics.

  8. He certainly did not like the shot! The girl gave him the shot and he turned around and leaped onto me. Sam likes to curl up on my shoulder and rub his face on my neck, and when she did that, he did that. I felt bad, because I don't want him hurt, but yeah. I am very attached to my cats! :)

  10. Awww he is adorable. When I was much, much younger, we had a kitty that looked exactly like that. Thank you for the welcome though! :)

I won't make another thread yet, but I will see if anyone can help me here.

Besides Sam, I have two other cats, Cletus who is 9 and truly my world, and another cat named Barney who is more so the family cat. Cletus is very unique and pretty much the dominant cat in the house. Barney is more so just doing his own thing, but extremely loveable. Cletus does not really like Sam, and Barney, I had never seen him hiss before and he was spitting, and hissing, and growling when he saw him.

So I would crate Sam when they wanted to come in here, and try to get them used to each other. Cletus did alright, but I had to ask him to leave, and I mean ask him nicely, and he goes. I only did so because I could tell Sam was getting really scared, cowering in the back and it worried me.

Now, my brother lives here and has a dog that nobody likes in the house, pet wise and me, he has attacked my dogs before, while they were alive, and I do not like him one bit. Very loveable dog, he is just very territorial. Anyway, both Cletus and Barney know my room as a sanctuary, as other rooms as well. So I feel bad neglecting them to spend time in here as often. Barney has blocked because of the stress from Bruiser and nearly died, we got extremely lucky with him, so I don't want that to happen to Sam either with the cats trying to dominate him.

How can I get Cletus to accept him? He is the one I am worried about. I have had them meet via separated cage and behind a door, Cletus and Sam, I rubbed them down with a clean, new sock and let them smell each other and they loved it, but in sight, Cletus just does not approve. Cletus is about 20lbs, Barney is at least 25lbs, and Sam is maybe a pound or two, something like that. The thought of a fight breaking out is very scary. Now Barney is younger than Cletus, but he was a cat when we introduced him to Cletus, and Cletus was around 5-6.

Is there a way to ensure the safety of either cat? Should I wait for Sam to get older too before introducing them face to face?

Any help would greatly be appreciated!

  11. Welcome SySteve! When my little Roxy had her first boosters, she acted a little "off" her game but by the time I came back home from work she was acting like her normal, crazy self! Let us know how your baby is doing tomorrow!

  12. Just a quick update on Sam, he is doing much better today. This morning before work he was still a little sleepy, but as soon as I walked in the door, he awoke from a sleep on my bed, leaped to me and started rubbing his face on mine. So as a special treat, the other cats are sleeping, upstairs of course, and I put the dog away and let him run around downstairs. Instead of being cooped up in my room, he was running around having a blast.

Thank you everyone for the support and putting my mind to ease. I am so happy he is doing better now, still angry with the vet though!

  13. Great,I'm so happy to hear he is nearly back to being his old self!
As for integrating them, just give them time but don't leave Sam alone with the older cats until you have supervised a lot of their time together to be sure that Sam is safe.
When you start letting them be together under your supervision try to have a feliway diffuser from pet smart,it really helps calm them down. Also have toys and treats and make it a party, lavishing much attention on your older kits, give them time. http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2755197

  14. Welcome, and little Sam is a cutie! Very good advice above. Keep us posted on his progress.

  15. He was playing for some time after that, he even curled up around my neck and slept while I was writing and chatting to some friends online. :) He is currently sleeping right now, but he was running and playing on his scratching post all over again, though I feel as if he may be getting bored with his limited toys. Tomorrow after work I am going to buy him a few more to keep him entertained.

Now for meeting, as I said before, I am just worried about his safety. If they got into a fight and I broke it up and got hurt, that is fine. I have plenty of scars to prove that their scratches are a minor annoyance at worst. Sam is very small, we think he may be the runt of the litter, so that just worries me some. I will definitely pick up that diffuser though, I hope it works alright.

It has been decided before he arrived too, Sam would be for a majority of the time for some time to come, that he would stay in my room with me. We felt it would be best that he have his own sanctuary, so for him to be unsupervised, it would be a long time from now. I just wish there was a way to introduce them and guarantee safety. Personally, I do not de-claw my cats, I am not comfortable with it, so they do have claws which is my primary concern of the whole thing.

But I will definitely use your advice when the confrontation occurs, and hopefully everything goes smoothly. I did speak with my mom, how she introduced Cletus to the kitty that passed this past April, and her story went like this. They had Cletus out, and Hankey came in. It started to storm, so my mom vouched to bring Cletus out and back into his room. My step father encouraged her to wait, see what happens. Hankey came up to Cletus, bit him on the back of the neck, and from there they were best friends pretty much.

I am hoping the same occurs with Cletus and Sam! :)

  16. Ut oh, we got another update. Sam just went to the bathroom and it is yellow and watery. I read somewhere that was not good.

Could that be from the shot? Or should I have him checked? :(

  18. . NORMAL STOOL AND URINE

Let’s summarize and say: Poop should be brown and formed. Urine should be yellow.

Guide to the Rainbow of Poop
and Urine Colors (The Scoop on Poop):

    Color:

    * Bloody - Actual red blood seen in stool. Could indicate panleukepenia. Grossly abnormal, must be seen ASAP.
    * Mucous - yellowish/white/clear slimy substance. Indicates severe bowel irritation. Grossly abnormal and needs immediate care.
    * Black - True dark black color to stool. Usually indicates bleeding high in the bowel. Severe sign, needs immediate attention.
    * Brown - Normal color. Be happy!
    * Orange - Usually indicates way too much bile in stool, can occur with reflux.Seek medical advice.
    * Yellow - Almost always indicates bacterial imbalance in the bowel. If has diarrhea also, usually related to coccidia. Seek medical advice.
    * White - Grossly abnormal color, usually indicates, severe bacterial imbalance and severe infection in the bowel. Kitten at risk of dying, needs medical attention, ASAP.

  19. See how he does with his next BM,if it's still watery and yellow he needs to have a fecal exam done.

Posted 1 year ago by Buttercup #

  20. My main cat, Cletus, the vet says he has coccidia. So that is what concerned me. He had two yellow stools today. One was part diarrhea, and then solid, and this one was pure liquid, with a little solid. I'll make sure to watch out for his next one though, to keep an eye out and if still yellow, I will schedule an appointment right away.

    Thank you!
