I don’t consider myself easily discouraged, but this kitty litter thing is becoming a big issue. I only have one bathroom that I can use for my kittens and it happens to be the bathroom I also have to use.

I clean the litter box about 3 times a day, sometimes more depending on how busy I am. Every single time I walk out of my bathroom I have litter stuck to my feet, which then finds its way into the rest of my house. I sweep the bathroom at least every other day, as opposed to my normal (pre-kitty) weekly cleaning. Even every other day sweeping isn’t sufficient to keep the litter at bay.

I don’t know what to do!! I’m going crazy there is litter everywhere. I have two different types of “litter catchers”, under the box. One is a carpet thing which does quite a good job but is a pain to clean, and then after the carpet is this rubbery thing with little holes in it, which does an okay job. There is still massive amounts of litter on my floor. I specifically bought a higher edged litter box to prevent any kicked out litter, and so far they don’t really seem to purposefully kick any out. I think it just gets tracked everywhere. ANY SUGGESTIONS WILL HELP!!!! I am going crazy….

Oh also the brand of litter I use is Tidy Cats 24/7 for multiple cats (clumping). I just bought a bag of Fresh Step something rather but have yet to open it since I am still finishing off Tidy Cats. I am a full time college student (yes, even taking joyous summer classes!)so I do not have a ton of extra cash for really expensive litter or those fancy self-cleaning boxes but if I need to pay a bit more to solve this problem I can.

You are doing what you are supposed to be doing, its just litter that can be a pain in the behind. The kittens are probably not purposefully kicking out the litter, some kick more than others. You said that you got a higher edged litter box, I have found that a cement mixing tub (from Home Depot/Lowe’s) that only cost $5. I do have kickers so found that works for me, before I used a litter box inside a much higher sided cardboard box that kept the litter contained. I hadn’t thought about it at the time, I could have cut a side down on a plastic tub (one of the large packing tubs) for the entry and put their litter box in there. Just things I have used, you may not like any of these.

Try getting a litter box with a top; my Grommet is a ‘vigorous digger’ in the litterbox, and, before I got covered litterboxes, there was litter everywhere. Once I got the covered litterboxes the problem was pretty much solved. Hope this will work for you, too!

Spice has a deep pan with a cover, it works great !!!

Roxy has a litterpan with the higher edges but she still manages to get a pile outside the box. I just put an old rug under the litterpan and when she builds her little pile, I can pick up the rug and toss the litter outside. That way, the litter is not on my carpet and it’s relatively easy for me to clean up.

Abby and Cuddles also have deep boxes with covers (they like their privacy)…. I also have ‘tracking carpet’ mats on the floor, so when they step out, the vast majority of ‘crumbs’ is left there…… other than that, there will always be a few ‘stray crumbs’….. I keep a dust buster next to the litter box for easy vacuming it up……

…. oh, and I find that a non-clumping litter works better for me (others love the clumping kind)….. I use a combo of fresh step regular clay litter and a bag of tidy cat or pearl crystals……. it’s easy to vacumn up, and the crystals really absorb odors…..

best of luck and enjoy TDK!

Does your litterbox have to be in the bathroom? I know that’s the traditional place, but I couldn’t stand having litter in my bathroom- too small a space and too often used by humans. Could it go in a closet (with the door always cracked open) or some other nook somewhere?

You may want to sweep on a daily basis. I have to sweep everyday or I will have litter on the floor too.

have newpaper or a towel underneath. you can discard or throw away the kitty litter easier

Jess the problem is with the litter that gets outside the box. Do you have a tip for how you keep all the litter in the kitty litter box? What do you do to make sure it stays where it should? I bet you have an idea or two!

i put my kitty litter over a wide towel to sstleast keep it off the floor. also what would be great is if you have a top on the litterbox were they can go in and out but its less likely to get it on the floor

You put the towel on the ground outside the litterbox? That is an idea to have something they can walk on after they get out of the box. That is like AV’s tracking mats.

You’d have to wash it often as it will contain bacteria, but it is a solution!

I keep the third litter box in my bathroom ( I have 3 cats). I use the “Breeze” system for that one–no regular litter, uses pellets that let the urine pass to a pad underneath. No dust at all, which is great since my bath is in my bedroom.

I wasn’t going to post this, but after reading everyone’s creative solutions, I just have to ‘brag’ on Mr. AV….. when we did our most recent renovation (yes, I’ve lived thru many! LOL)…. he knew how attached Abby was to me, and that she would spend the majority of her nights (in bed with us) and days sleeping on the corner of the bed (on my side) during the day, so when he put in my new bathroom, he ‘made her a bathroom too’!… seriously, in the ‘toilet closet’, he built another closet with a door – the idea was to store extra lines, sheets, towels, etc…. anyway, he put shelving for just that purpose on the top 1/2 and then on the bottom half (separated from the top half), is a space from the floor up of about 2 ‘ (w) x 3’ (h)…… perfect for a litter box and mat!…. he then installed a cat door in the bottom part of the door, so Abby can access her box any time she needs! It’s so easy for me to clean, cause all I have to do is open the ‘closet’ door, and scoot the litter box out of the lower half!…….. it’s near the toilet, so daily scoopings are easy, not messy, and to remove the box, carry it outside and wash it completely is easily done! It has to be one of the top ten ‘gifts’ he has every given me!

No matter what method you use, cats WILL end up tracking some litter out onto the floor. The idea of a dust buster is great. I keep a small broom and dust pan at the bathroom and any time I see litter on the floor I take a few seconds to sweep it up right then. It keeps the floor decent and really doesn’t take that much time and effort. Seems a hassle until you get used to doing it and find it actually saves time and aggravation in the long run, whether you use broom and dust pan or a small handheld dust buster vac.

Whoa!!! Wasn’t expecting this many responses so quickly. Thanks so much everyone there are a lot of really good ideas here. I have moved my broom and dust pan into the bathroom permanently… I generally sweep a few crumbs here and there when I have an extra minute but I may invest in a small vacuum. I think I may ask my hubby to make something with the plastic tub idea. Maybe get one of those huge ones with lids from Target and have the litter box inside that? I don’t know how well my kittens will like a covered box but it is worth a try. I think the towel may be a good idea since it would be easy to change frequently. I think I had heard somewhere that corn litter didn’t track as much… is that true?

Hi, Mama Bear, is there another room that you might be able to put the litter box in other than your bathroom? From having many cats, the litter will be tracked pretty much wherever you have the litter box. It’s just a matter of cleaning up after them. I caution you on changing litters, unless your babies are young. Once they get used to a certain type of litter, could, cause change in behavior. I use fresh step, and have stayed with it for 15 years. It’s up to you. I wish you luck with your situation. I have also used a covered litter box and found it cut down on the mess. Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks a lot! I definitely think I will start looking at covered boxes
