Pooping/Feeding

(8 posts)
  1. Hello everyone... another uninformed new user here. I just have to say thank you to all of you! I too went through a pooping worry and I think I read about 20 poop/constipation topics about how to make this kitty poop!

I found an abandoned kitten on my drive way. There is a mother cat outside with a liter of about 3 kittens and she did not want anything to do with this one. He was tiny (maybe less than a week old), had traces of blood on him and there were flies flying all around him. I thought maybe the mom would eventually come back for him, and since I was on my way out to work, I promised if I get home and he's still there, that I would help him... and when I returned (around 11 pm) there were no other cats/kittens in sight except for this little white kitten, whom I named Milo, shivering like crazy. I spent about 2 hours washing him, picking all the fleas, and scrubbing the FLY EGGS off of him. it was not pretty... I bout some KMR, fed him and took him to the vet to get dewormed.

but here's my question now... His eyes were barely open when I found him, and I've had him for about a week now, but he's pooping and peeing on his own, and I was wondering is it too early to litter train him and how?? I put him in a box with liter, and he just tried to escape... when he couldn't he cried till I picked him up. He's sooo tiny still! He's only 6oz and hasn't gained any weight this week even though he's eating like crazy. Another thing is how do I get him to eat on his own? I put milk in a little bowl and he won't touch it... he still loves his bottle. He has another appointment with the vet on the 22nd for his second round of deworming... but can any body help till then?

  2. *bump*

Hi Khey, welcome to TDK :o) Most posters are over in the States, so the're just getting going around now, I'm sure there will be some good advice soon.

I've added some tags to this thread which will bring up a list of other relevant threads you may find helpful.

Bless you for looking after this little kitten - does he have a name yet?

  3. He's probably still a bit young to litter train, but just keep putting him in here once in a while, make it available to him and he should figure it out within a week or two.
He should probably be a bit heavier and definitely should be gaining weight. I would say it was worms but you said he's already had a round of deworming. You might want to give a call to the vet and ask a question about his weight and rate of weight gain. Good signs on the eating and eliminating though.
Does he have teeth yet? one his little baby teeth get in good they usually start to loose interest in the bottle.

  4. Hi Khey! Welcome to TDK!

Some of the others will have better advice for you but I would definitely call the vet again to ask about the weight gain question. Do you know what kind of dewormer they used on him? Was it an all-around dewormer that will kill most types of worms?
I think kittens can start to be litter trained about 3-4 weeks old. I used Kitten Attract Litter and supplement when the time was right for my little one. It really helps get the kitten into the litter pan so they know where to go.
Someone else should be along soon to answer some more of your questions. The weekends can be a little slow though.

Can we see pics of Milo? :) We like kitten pics!

  5. Thanks again every one!

The vet I went to was not very helpful. I asked a bunch of questions and gave me very brief general answers. I think he was really busy that day and just wanted me to go right away.

I saw some little teeth in there :) very very small ones, so probably his baby teeth? do kittens go through painful teething? because he seems to like to nibble a lot.... I suspect he may still have worms because he's such a ferocious eater! he chews and chews on the nipple, and on a number of occasions he pulled the nipple off the bottle and spilled milk all over him and myself. is this normal? could it be from teething?

and I'll try to post some pics up... He's very young still and I get defensive because people say he's not cute :( I think he's adorable! my boyfriend says he looks like a bat.
