The ant civilization has awoken again. Help please!!

  1. A month ago I would have put out a couple of Terro traps and let them kill themselves and been rid of them for a few weeks. With Hurley in the house, able to contort himself into very odd and small spaces, I dont know what to do!
They appear to be in the carpet in the computer room, not the room where Hurley eats luckily but the one with cable tv and computer access, so where we spend most of our time. I really dont want to have to lock Hurley in a small room, alone for a week or more so I can spray them or put out traps, but I cant let the ants stay and crawl on him and my son either. I found one in his fur while he chased another lol

What can I spray or put out or whatever to kill them dead without hurting kitty? (Did I mention, I really hate summer?)

  2. I know they hate vinegar, but it would take the color out of your rug. I think I heard of mixing 1/2 powered sugar and 1/2 baking soda and when they eat it, they bloat. :( Annoying things...... Good luch finding something.

  3. I have vaccumed twice now to take care of any already on the floor, I am moving the furniture tomorrow, I needed a change in here anyway :P Someone said oh go ahead and spray with Raid once its dry its totally safe, something about the chemicals evaporating but that doesnt really sound right. It seems like if it will kill ants for a week or month it would still be poisonous to us too?

  4. Hi Jourdan...don't know if you've heard of it before....many of us on TDK have used it(including myself). It's called DIATOMACEOUS EARTH. It's a powder you sprinkle around the house (inside & out) & is not toxic to animals. I'm unable to find the other conversations in the archives & I'm quite computer illiterate to say the least to conjour up the discussions we've had here in the past. I can only suggest you google the product & research it yourself. Many TDKers swear by it. And I swear by it. It worked great for outside to rid our yard of ants. They were taking over the kitty dishes at one time. I used it inside for fleas as well. It worked great! I repeat...make sure if you order it, that it's the food grade & not the other they use for pools.
Hopefully someone will come on that's more puter savvy than myself & can help you with a link. Until then...google it & see what you think. Good Luck.

  7. Oh I have Zodiac premise flea and tick spray for household and fabric (Do not use on pets). works on ants and roaches as well. I am so icked by bugs that I use it. All I have to do is keep the cats out of the area for maybe an hour. Not too hard as they nap in one room so when they are napping i do the main area and when they are playing I close the napping room and do the napping room.

  8. Bay leaves, yup that I got from TDK as well, I have it in my pantry. in my old building that was roach infested I never had roaches in my apartment. Used the spray and used bay leaves in my cupboards. No ant problem :)

  9. I learned about using bay leaves some years ago - Thank You Paul Harvey! It does work - when we moved into this house, we discovered ants - lots of them - coming up through the carpet in one of the rooms in the basement and I put a bay leaf in every room of the house. The ants couldn't move out fast enough! Now, whenever I see an ant inside, I just put a new leaf in that room - actually haven't needed to put any down in a couple of years.

  11. One bay leaf in a room? Fresh or the dryed out kind you buy on the spice isle?
I decided to spray around the outside of the room since there are 2 outside doors going into here. Not sure it will work on this problem or not but I had to try.
And I will try the bay leaves, my ants may or may not be affected by them but what could it hurt?

  12. I buy the ones in the spice aisle, don't buy the most expensive ones.

  13. Okay after much reading today I am going to the market for bay leaves. I also found that lemon juice repels them also, and lucky for me my dad brought me a super lemon a couple days ago! The universe knew I was going to need that supersized lemon that I have been wondering what to do with?
I sprayed the carpet in the room with lemon juice, and will lay out the bayleaves and hope for the best. I cant get that DIATOMACEOUS EARTH around here so have to order it online so that could take awhile.

At least the room is lemony fresh now :P

  14. The only way to get rid of them is to kill all the ones in the nest, especially the queen. I used Raid ant traps, they go in, gather the poison (they think it is food) and take it back to the nest, where the others eat the poison and die. You have to be patient, it takes about a week to get them all. You will have to use one in each room you see ants. Tape them down so the cats can't play with them. I would have to do this every spring as they would make nests outside in the front cement steps.

  15. Terro works the same way, I have always sworn by it, the ants eat it and take it home with them, they dry out and die, and I guess ants eat dead ants so those die as well ect til the ant hill is wiped out.
I just dont know if I feel safe leaving them out around Hurley. I did put them all around the outside of the house though.
