  1. We had a cat called Misty, she came on heat and jumped from a second floor window, came back 1 week later, very skinny and pregnant.

Eventually she had a healthy litter of 4, 2 boys, 2 girls, 2 tabbys, 2 black & white. (1 of each).

Anyway we noticed on the male tabby he had excess skin where his umbilical cord was. Yesterday, at 6 weeks old, we realised it was a lump and a hernia. We took him to see the vets asap.

They said we can put him to sleep
see how he goes, but he might die
or operate but he might die

either way, it's a high chance he'll die so we brought him home to keep an eye on him. Last night he threw up a couple of times after we gave him some whiska's kitten milk. We cried a lot thinking we had to put him down as he was ill. This morning he threw up again, but after that was eating solids again and playing with his siblings and acting mostly normal.

Then he began to meow constantly for about 15 minutes, we knew he was hurting, he also made some weird coughing noises.

Currently he's asleep and has been for a few hours now, he hasn't threw up since 8am, I hope he's going to be ok.

This morning his lump was smaller than yesterday so we thought he was getting better..we're going to wait and see if when he wakes up, he meows in pain, if he does, I think we know what we have to do..:(

  2. I'm so sorry, Jamie. Where there's life, there's hope for this little one, but I'm glad that you're prepared too, in case you need to give him the final gift of slipping away with no pain. Whatever you need to do, it's obvious how much you all love him. I wish all kittens and cats had such loving and wonderful companions as you.

  3. Jamie, my heart goes out to you. I lost my Molly last week. So much sadness when you lose a kitty old or young. Know that whatever decision you make will be the right one. We are all here for you to help you get thru this difficult time. (Jamie)

  4. I'm sorry, but I dont agree. If its an umbilical hernia, and the kitty is 6 weeks old, there should be no reason why they cant fix it. Any surgery that involves a general anesthetic has risks, those risks get higher the longer the animal has to be under anesthetic. I know of shelters where they spay kittens at 5 weeks, which is a much more invasive procedure than a hernia correction. They really just have to open up the skin, push the intestines back into the abdominal cavity, and stitch up the stomach wall. It shouldnt take more than 10 mins under anesthetic to fix. If you want to fight for your kitty, go for it. If your vet doesnt want to, find another vet.

  5. skyron, that's very reassuring. thank you but his guts may already be rotting inside him, in which case, she's said she will have no option but to put him to sleep.

We always wanted a cat called scrambles but our first 2 were females and then one got pregnant and had a litter, one little tabby male, he was always our favourite, we'd be upset if any of them got ill but it was him, the one we were keeping :(

I was so close to agreeing to him being put to sleep as he became ill today, but he could be ill because of any other reasons? or maybe his guts are stuck and not rotting yet? Whatever it is, we've just paid a £200 deposit and he's in theater now. If there's +2% chance of him living, it's worth it, whether he lives or dies.

Thanks for all the comfort & support, I'll let you guys know how he gets on

  6. He's only 6 weeks old and it's just smaller than roughly the size of a ping pong ball, because of his age, that's where the risks are involved with the anesthetic...if he's under it for too long he will die, that's why it's worrying and stuff, I just hope it's a simple in and out job and he'll be fine. He's adorable

  7. I'm so sorry. Poor little guy.

  8. Just got a phone call.

He lived through the op! He defied the odds and lived through that...but

he had a tiny bit of guts trapped, it's gone purple but not rotted, so hopefully blood will circulate again and it will heal soon. Gonna ring up again at 10:30am to check on him, so glad he lived the op, he's defied odds and I hope he recovers well.

He's meowing a lot bless him but I hope he recovers, I'm so happy I didn't put him down and threw him a lifeline, literally

  9. Well done, JM!! Sending the powerful healing TDK white light to help pull this little fighter through his recovery. Blessings to you for giving him a chance at life. :)

  10. Thanks very much, he's over 1 hurdle but the next 24 hours are crucial.

He's defied the odds so far though and the vet thought he would die under anesthetic but he's a little fighter so I have high hopes and I'm very happy at the minute

I'm SOOO glad we decided not to put him to sleep, any chance is better than no chance, even if it's a very small chance

  11. Oh, I'm so glad to hear he made it thru the surgery. He is definately a little fighter. All the TDK White Light and healing powers are surrounding him so he can keep fighting.

  12. Thanks very much :)

Really want to see him again and have him back home already but he'll have another 2-3 days at the vets yet to recover

  13. I am glad to hear he made it thru the surgery; sending the TDK healing white light his way. Prayers for a complete and speedy recovery! You did the right thing....

  14. Thanks, he should have been fed some milk by now as well so hopefully the fact we haven't had a phone call should indicate his system hasn't rejected it

  15. Sending tons of white light and prayes for your kitty. Welcome to TDK.

  16. I am so sorry I am just reading this.
Skyron is 1000% right! You did the right thing. I had a kitten with a hernia like that many moons ago. The vet I went to told me she had a 50-50 chance of surviving the surgery and putting her to sleep was the best thing I could do.
Peaches was about 2 months at the time. I decided to go for it, just as you did and she made it through with FLYING colors! Peaches should have been named Queen Iron Paw because she ruled her house that way.

Your kitten will be fine, especially if he pulled through the hardest part so well. (((JM and kitten)))
I will keep both of you in my thoughts and prays.

  17. I'm so sorry. I hope he does okay. :(

Posted 1 year ago by Trisha #

  18. thanks cath. If he had 50-50, there'd have been no doubt at all about giving him the chance. But the vet said he will most likely die and she felt uncomfortable doing it and reccommended we didn't, but I think it's better to try, than not try at all?

If a human got sick, would the doctors say "well, there's only a 10% chance he will live, best to put him to sleep".

    No they wouldn't.

Thanks for all the support guys, I'm quite hopeful about him and think he will do just fine. By the way can I post images on here? I will show some pics of him

  19. So have you named him Scrambles? I'm just reading this thread now, so pleased he's proving to be a little fighter :o)

I can't remember how to get an image as your avator, I did mine a long time ago, and needed help myself! To display a lot of pictures, you could create a Catster account for him - kind of like Facebook for cats (yes, really!!) If you click on my avator (that's Button) you'll see all our 4 mogs, plus ones we've loved who are gone now. Once you've created a Catster page, you can cut and paste the page's URL into your profile here.

Glad you've found TDK, hope you stick around so we can follow little Scrambles' progress.

  20. i'm so happy to read this! The next most important thing is antibiotics. At least a week of antibiotics. Kittens have an amazing ability to heal - they really can bounce back. I've had kittens where i thought I would just take them to the vet in the morning and have them put to sleep, only to find them up & playing the next morning. I have learned with kittens not to trust my guts - when my gut says put them to sleep, they usually amaze me and pull through. Its important that you go visit him as often as you can, he shouldnt think that you abandoned him in the hands of torturors with big needles. We will all be praying for him here at the tdk.

  21. thanks, just got to hope his little intestines heal now, kittens do heal up fast but I'm hoping he's able to heal. The vet said a bit was caught and it was purple. But most things trapped go purple, at least it wasn't black else he would have been put down.

  22. just got a picture of him on my avatar here. :)

  24. Awww, your baby is a sweetie! Much healing power being sent your way, little one...
Yes, JM, my vet said it was about 50-50 but he recommended putting her down. I always follow my gut and it told me to ignore the fool. I'm glad you did too. This little one will reward you with a lifetime of love for it.

  25. That's absolutely FANTASTIC news, I'm so thrilled to read this! He sounds like an absolute battler and I'm sure he has no intention of going anywhere because he loves his life and he loves YOU. Sending little Scrambles loads and loads of healing energy!

  26. I love the name Scrambles! He is adorable and I hopehopehope he makes it.

  27. just rang the vet up to see how he's coping today, he's jumping about and being all hyperactive like kittens are supposed to, we can bring him home, as long as he's careful with his stitches and takes his medicine. Gotta keep a close eye on him to make sure other kittys don't claw his stitching and to make sure he does a poo:D chuffed.
