New Kitten hissing at older cats

(10 posts)
  1. I've looked everywhere on the net and everyone talks about older cats dissing new kittens in the home. But our new 2 month old kitten hisses at the older cats. They are trying to be friendly. Even when they aren't near her, she growls at them. They are both 10 years old.

I've introduced them slowly and never let them together without me being there. But now, the older mama alpha will suddenly go after the kitten and today she scratched her to bleeding.

The kitten seems curious and will follow them, but then hiss. I can see that our older boy cat seems frustrated that she won't play with him. He's being very sweet with her.

    How to deal with this?

  3. This may suprise you, but while introducing the kitten to the others, give the resident cat(s) lots of attention instead of doing so with the kitty. If they keep fighting, try using Bach Soothing Remedies --- or something like that. I hope your kitten is alright.

  4. It just takes time for them to establish the pecking order. Your little one has a lot of gumption, trying to un-seat the alpha cat! Feliway can calm them down for now.

  5. Put the misbehaving cat(s) in a separate room and shut the door if things aren't working out. Good luck!

  10. that kitten has quite the attitude! The kitten is trying to "start something" with the resident cat(s). Usually it's the resident cat hissing at the new kitten/cat to establish that they (the resident cat) is "top cat." I would suggest giving the original cat lots of attention and praise them when they are tolerating the new kitten.
