  1. Well, it seems that a lot of us are either out there on our bikes, thinking about biking, or have bikes in the garage collecting a few cobwebs. And some of us are thinking about getting a bike and taking up the sport but might need a bit of encouragement. And so..... I am forming the Official TDK Cycling Team!

We have some very simple requirements to participate on the team - riding a bike. It doesn't matter what kind of bike, what color of bike, what kind of components - it just needs to be a bike.

And why should we have a team? Primarily to encourage each other. But there are many advantages to joining the team. Lots of you who bike know that more experienced bikers are loath to share what they know. Or worse, they look down on equipment and rattle off stats about "the best bikes". Why do they do that? Because they are bike snobs. We all have encountered them.

Among the many purposes of the TDK Cycling Team will be the sharing of knowledge. Why should we all reinvent the wheel? (LOL) Let's share what we know about training tips, equipment (to include the never ending search for a saddle that is actually comfortable), safety tips and things that we have learned on our rides. Let's share great places to ride, upcoming events and internet sites that have good deals on bike equipment, clothing and hydration products.

Where have you ridden? Did you see something wonderful or beautiful? What have you learned up close and personal about the importance of safety on a bicycle? Let's share what we know!

To get us started, I want to share this amazing story that Linda sent to me.

If that doesn't inspire us, nothing will!

Of course, our official TDK Cycling Team jerseys are pink!

It's easy to join the team. You must simply agree to the two rules below and then sign your name!

    TDK Cycling Team Rules

Rule 1. I am not in competition with my teammates.

Rule 2. I promise to never become a bike snob.

Ready to join? Then sign below!

  4. Yay!!!! We have members!!

JF, I ride where it's flat so I feel your pain as I rode a ride last Sunday that had mega hills. It's been awfully hot here in Texas this summer and the best thing to do is to ride as early in the morning as you can, and drink often. I carry two water bottles on my bike - one with an electrolyte replacement drink and one with water. I have been known to dump the entire bottle of water over my head and down my jersey.

Freeway, I used to be a really competitive distance runner and was almost obsessed with racing. My husband and I made a pact when I started biking. We will do organized rides but not races. For one thing, I'm more... um.... "mature" now (not the same thing as older!) and I know that I'm never going to be fast. But I loved racing when I was running. So if you are really interested in doing that, I would say research your local bike club and begin to ride with them. Do interval training as that will make you faster. And I would start with a very short race - maybe a 5K.

Design a jersey? That would be awesome!

  5. WWM i just finished reading the post. i agree to the rules. and some info.
http://www.rei.com/category/4500003#expertAdvice this website is good it has a ton of vieos and if there is a store near anybody they give different classes. the classes range from beginner to expert and they not only teach you how to ride but they teach you about your bike. it awesome.

  6. Wow, Freeway - that is an amazing site with great information! I especially like the detailed instructions on how to change a flat tire. Thank you!

  8. So it's like a triathlon! I used to be on a triathlon team where one girl swam, one rode the bike and I was the runner. We had so much fun!

  9. ah, Mr. AV and I ride sometimes, but we've both talked about making it more of a regular thing!..... it's exactly 4 miles down and back Bayshore to our favorite little diner....... does that count? ....... our bikes are nothing special - good old Schwinns.... we don't ride fast, but we sure do enjoy the scenery and watching the dolphins when they come up in the bay!........

..... I'd like a pink team jersey, but you'd better make Mr. AV's green - matches his eyes! LOL

Posted 1 year ago by AV #

  10. Of course that counts, AV! And remember - it doesn't matter what you are riding.

    Join up!

  11. Great idea, WWM! Yes, you can count me in ~ I'm signing up; just have to get that new bike... will be looking this week. No tight jerseys, tho ~ they're too hot ;-)... just a TDK shirt, pink is good for the ladies, suggestions on colors for the guys?? Maybe a pink helmet, too?? I think GD will be up for this too ~ she just posted on FB about a ride ~ 40 miles out and 40 miles back!

  12. I have a bike. Have had for four years. Haven't even taken the tags off. Guess I am the one who has the cobwebs on their bike in the garage. Had a bad wreck at the age of 10 and have never gotten back on. I smashed my left leg and they weren't sure I would ever walk again. I have tried twice to get on it, each time I have had a massive panic attack as soon as I swing my leg over. I feel like such a loser. My friends do "fun" 100 mile rides every day. Makes me feel left behind. I used to ride all the time (and had some really great legs to boot!). Maybe I need professional help?!

    Posted 1 year ago by mollycat71 #

  13. Oh, MC - if there is anything that you are not, it's a loser! In all honestly, I don't think that biking is the ideal sport for you. There are too many opportunities to crash - just ask me or look at my left knee! No, you don't need professional help! You just need to find a sport that you enjoy because after all, it is supposed to be fun.

KM, did GD do 80 miles or she is planning to do 80 miles? Hopefully you'll find a bike that you like on end of season sale price!

Posted 1 year ago by WillowandWindismom #

  14. What if my bike was stationery and sat in a long line at the gym. Would that be ok?

Posted 1 year ago by lisaeylau #

  15. LOL, Lisa! Well, it's not quite the same as cycling on the road, but I think it might count.

Posted 1 year ago by WillowandWindismom #

  16. I can do that kind of "cycling" too Lisa!

    Posted 1 year ago by mollycat71 #

  17. Green, I vote Green for the guys.... but of course, why don't our guys here weigh in ????? Mr. AV votes Green!

Posted 1 year ago by AV #

  18. Just checked ~ GD did a total of 40 miles ~ not 80. She corrected her post, because many of us thought she did 80 miles total today ;-) I told her about this thread, so, hopefully, she'll join up ;-)

Posted 1 year ago by kittymom #

  19. Oh I would like to join. My dad fixed up my bike today so its all set for biking. Happy trails TDK bikers!

  21. How about if I'm the 'water girl'? I'd gladly ride along side everyone in my 'bike'--it has four wheels, air-conditioning and an awesome sound system. MC could ride along, too, since I have room for about 4 others! In this heat, we can't have deydrated riders! :)

Posted 1 year ago by FondaHonda #

  22. Yes Fondahonda you can be our water girl making sure we stay hydrated and if we need to cool down we have you and also you can be the saftey driver so when we are in a group we have a car with us. Welcome on board on the cycling team!

Posted 1 year ago by Chey #

  23. LOL, FH - well, we'll have to take a vote :-)

You know, I've been checking and pink jerseys are actually very hard to find. Most are associated with breast cancer, which is a fine cause to were a jersey in support of. But.... maybe we need another color?

KM, I would have been bowled over if GD had done 80 miles. Mainly because she doesn't have a bike!!!!!

    Yay, TDK Cycling Team!!!!!

Posted 1 year ago by WillowandWindismom #

  24. GD, where are you????? We want you on this team!!

Kilroy, where are you? We need you and Tigerlilly with your pink bikes!

Posted 1 year ago by WillowandWindismom #

  25. Perhaps a white shirt with siloetts of cats and words printed TDK cycling team

Or something Orange, Black and White but that still leaves out a lot of colour cats.

    Hmmmm

Posted 1 year ago by Chey #

  26. I have a turquoise and white Raliegh mountain bike (not trick dirt bike as my dad made me repeat several times today lol)

Posted 1 year ago by Chey #

  27. LOL @ WWM ~ GD borrowed a bike ;-) she gets hers in a few days, I think...

Posted 1 year ago by kittymom #

  28. Maybe someone could design a shirt that could be printed on a white or a black shirt and then we could get the person to print them and we order them and proceeds go to the tdk fund or something like that.

Posted 1 year ago by Chey #

  29. chey there is a TDK fund?....cool i love the T-shirt idea this is so exciting.

Posted 1 year ago by Freeway #

  30. Well, I know gym biking is totally outside the spirit of this thing, but a) I take so much beta-blocker I can't do anything outdoors in Texas until November, b) I don't have a bike and I live on a big scary highway, and c) I haven't set foot in the gym in more than two years. I am desperate for motivation!!!! I really want to start exercising again!
