Good morning, ...I've been reading the posts on this site for about a month now, saw what awesomly kind compassionate and funny folks you all are, so I decided to join. (This is the first forum I've ever joined) Anyway, enough about me...one of my almost one year old (we think) fixed female Shadow, has taken to eating the corner of the rubber nonslip mat thingie in my tub. All three of my cats drink from the faucet, so I didn't think anything of seeing her in there. Now, the other day I went to clean the tub and noticed a part of the mat was gone..none of the humans cut it..I was confused until I saw gnawing on it...Of course I took it out of the tub, but now I don't know if I should rush her to the vet or what...theres a good size piece missing (maybe 3 inches by 3/4 inches) so she must have been at it for a while....anyway, thanks for letting me ramble and any insight would be appreciated :)

Hi, Crazy! Welcome to TDK - I'm so glad that you have exited the "lurk" mode and joined in. This was my first forum, too, and is still the only one that I belong to. I never thought that I would join a chat group but I quickly came to love my TDK family.
I'm not certain what to tell you about Shadow, but surely she didn't gnaw that large of a piece at one time. My Willow will sometimes gnaw on hard things, almost like she just has a need to chew. But she doesn't swallow her chosen gnawing objects. I wonder if Shadow is chewing on the mat but spitting it out? I'll bet that there will be others here who will have some suggestions for you. There's not much regarding kitties that someone here hasn't experienced.
Again, Welcome!

Hi Crazy, welcome to TDK Land. Is it possible there are tiny pieces littered some where? My Molly will sometimes chew on box corners and I will find little chunks laying on the carpet, where she spits them out. Unless she starts showing some discomfort, I wouldn't worry too much at this time. Good that you removed it though. Others may have more suggestions.

Hi Crazy!! Welcome to TDK!!! My big orangie Gir will chew on anything that is rubber or plastic we find pieces all over. I don't think there is anything for you to worry about.

As long as she doesn't throw up or has diarrhea, or stops eating, she should be OK. This behavior is called "pica" and Siamese are more prone to it. Oh, and Welcome!

Welcome and glad you decided to post. My cat Gavin loves to rip pieces off the edges of cardboard boxes, but spits them out. Oliver loves to chew afgans, and things like that. I have to keep all hidden from him. Even those fuzzy socks! What a pickle!! I think too, that your cat chewed alittle at a time, and probably didn't eat it. Sure hope so!!

Crazy, welcome to TDK and all it's craziness. This is also the first and only forum I have joined.
My cat Shadz(Moonshadow) loves to tear cardboard boxes apart but we normally find the bits littered around about. Just in case Shadow has been eating the rubber bits it was a good idea to remove the mat, keep it out of the tub when not in use. If Shadow seems to be fine and it eating and eliminating as usual then you shouldn't need the vet visit.
Do join us on the Cafe and night Shift, we have lots of fun.Posted 1 year ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

My only forum too - except facebook, if that counts as one. My cat Russell, and just about all my foster kittens during their teething stages, enjoy gnawing on cardboard. Russell never grew out of it, and he's ruined our blinds and many, many rolls of toilet paper - but, since he's the kitty love of my life, he can get away with his crazyness! Plus, I am a "certified" crazy cat lady according to my friends and family :P

Good morning...Shadow is her usual goofy self. I've checked all the usual "hidey-holes" and haven't found any blue rubber (just some other unusual stuff her littermate Salem has hid...that, and how they acquired us will be an entire post for another day)...anyhow, since I can't find whole bits, I guess she thought it was a tasty supplement to her regular food. If anything starts to look unusual, I'll get her to the vet sooner, but they are due for an appointment in October anyway. Shadow is the only one of my many kitties to have strange eating habits except for my Einstein (who went to the Bridge after 20 yrs one month of being my faithful bedbuddy)..he used to perforate all the shiney paper that came with the news..one corner at a time..we had to hide it as soon as it came in or we had nothing but jigsaw puzzle parts :) Enough about him as it is still an open wound for me :( To the person who said it was pica, isn't that a vitamin deficency? Thanks for all the concern and greetings...I think I''m really gonna like it here at TDK

Hi, Crazy, here's an article on pica from one of our very favourite websites, the messybeast website (anything and everything to do with cats):
http://www.messybeast.com/pica.htm
I see the writer's own cat chewed tyres....

Tyres???!!!!!!
I should really know better than to be suprised by cats anymore...
Welcome to TDK Crazy, I'm Mad, or rather MCW for short. Look forward to chatting with you :o)

Just be sure to observe her stool and if there are no rubber mat fragments in it and you can't find any around the house, you should consider taking her to the vet. Also, take note of whether or not she is eating normally and passing stool, and the quality of the stool (watery, loose versus normal soft solid formed. And, of course, no vomiting.
-
Hi rocket.. Shadow hasn't vomited and her stools are normal and formed. She is eating and drinking and playing normally. I haven't found any blue bits in her poo, but I took the mat away 4-5 days ago (before my first post). so I'd think anything she might of swallowed would have passed by now. Thanks for checking in and I'l try to have pictures up next week.
