Bloated baby bellies and one skinny 3 month old kitten

(5 posts)
  1. Hi all! It's been a while since I've been on here. Kitten season has been horrendous in the Anchorage, Alaska area. Unfortunately, all rescues in the area are swamped and many overloaded. As a foster, I'm filled to the brim. I've got three 3 month old boys that were rescued from under a trailer (sick, sick, sick) and they've (thankfully!) recently become sociable and loving - and healthy - except for my tuxedo boy. He is so, so skinny! I also watched him have very watery light-colored diarrhea this afternoon. I'm thinking about starting him on Albon - any other ideas for this guy? He's already been dewormed twice.

Then, I've got a litter of four 2 month olds and one 2 and a half month old. They weight a bit more than two pounds - but it's all in their hard, bloated tummies. On two of them, they've got distinctive spine bones. They all eat very well, have been dewormed twice, and I've started them on Amoxicillian (sp.?) and have also been giving them water through syringe because they seem like they might be a bit dehydrated. Any ideas on those ones? I've been feeding them (and they eat like little grunting piggies!) a mixture of iams wet food, iams dry food, and whiskies gravy/chunks food. All eat well and their bowel movements are soft, but keeps its shape.

PLUS, I've got a feral momma cat in a cage with her two week old babies. She hisses, spats, and lunges at me when I feed her or clean her litterbox. Her babies seem to be healthy though, and I just was wondering when the best time would be to take her away (in order to socialize the kittens best) or if you all have ideas on how to help her.

    Thanks All!!!

  2. keep trying with the feral mommy. you can't seperate them until she weans them, which should be 4 more weeks or less. i know it is tempting to seperate them now, but she is still feeding them...

  3. Even if the mama doesn't appreciate your attentions, if the babies hear you, see you and smell you on a regular basis, that will go a long way in helping to socialize them.

What does the vet say about the ones who aren't gaining weight? Is it possible that they still have worms?

Are they pooping on a regular basis? Could they have some other disease? It really sounds like the little Tuxie may have something besides worms.

  4. Well, as much as I would absolutely love to take them to a vet - our rescue can't afford the expenses (the Alaska Cat Adoption Team). Everyone is gaining weight (at about an ounce or two every day or so), except for the oldest ones - especially my tuxie boy. I'm going to give him Albon tonight, since that's what my rescue people recommend for light-colored diarrhea.

I definitely don't plan on separating momma cat from her babies - I get too little sleep as it is without 3 a.m. bottle feedings! She is taking good care of them, so I'm definitely going to be patient with her. She's probably going to wean them around six weeks, right? I know a momma's milk is best for antibodies and stuff, so I'll definitely wait.

Here's a link to my photobucket of babies :P

  5. Awww, you certainly have a beautiful circus of kitties on your hands!

I can't suggest anything else for the tuxie, sounds like the Alban is a good plan. We have something similar at the shelter we give (can't remember what it's called. Might be Scourban.) I'm with you, leave the kittens with the feral mum until she weans them, they have a so much better chance of growing up healthy with her, though you probably wouldn't want to leave it much after six weeks. You sound like you know exactly what you're doing, and I think you're amazing!
