  1. I have a seven week old kitten and her name is Chloe Rae. I adopted her from a shelter and she was great the first couple of days. Then on the third day of having her home i saw that she had blood in her stool. I rushed to the vet and they said she has collitis and gave me antiboitic for her tummy and also gave me deworming medicine just in case because she tested negative for worms. The vet said that she looked like a great and healthy kitten. I was releaved when there wasnt anything really serve with her. Then the next day she had sneezing and it progressively got worse. Now she has her mouth open and clear discharge from her eyes. She is still eating and drinking. I called the vet back up and he gave me clavamox and told me to keep her warm and comfortable. I was so sad last night watching her. She looked so sad and having to breath through her mouth brothered me so much. I was so worried last night i stayed up with her all night making sure she was comfortable and had everything she needed. So far today she has slept all day, i have been giving her the clavamox and keeping her feed and hydrated. I am just worried and sad that there is nothing more i can i do for her. I have isolated her and put her in bathroom and keeping her comfy as possible. Is there any more i can do for her? How long does and upper respiratory infection last? It has been 48 hours since this has all begun (the uri) and I want to be sure that i am doing everything i can do to make her better. I have done steam showers so she can breathe the steam, i am keeping her fed and hydrated and medicated. I just want Chloe Rae to start feeling better really soon.

  2. It sounds like you are taking wonderful care of her, CRM. I don't have any more advice for you but welcome to TDK and I hope she starts feeling better soon, poor little one.

  3. I also have no more advice but wanted to say that it sounds like you're doing a terrific job. Chloe Rae is lucky to have you, and I hope she feels better soon.

Lots of folks here have had to give their babies Clavamox; I'm sure someone will be able to give you an idea of how long it takes to work.

  4. Hi CRM, I have a 5 month old kitten who is on his second URI. You sound like you're doing everything correctly. The last one he had lasted 2 weeks almost and he just got this one last week sometime. I am giving him Clavamox and it really does work. The only problem is that I was too stupid to isolate him, so now his brothers have it too. Feel better Chloe Rae. Welcome to TDK.

  7. Chloe still is sick, she has three days worth of antibiotics and hopefully she will start feeling better. I have her isolated in the bathroom and throughout the day i run the hot water in the shower to create steam, i am hoping this is helping with her congestion. It really is breaking my heart to see her breathing through her mouth. I wish there was something i can do to take her sickness away from her. I feel helpless. I have been giving her Clavamox and i am praying that this medicine kick in to high gear really soon. Does the steam from the shower really help with congestion? Any other home remedies i can do to help her?

  8. I'm sure it does, CRM. It's often recommended on here. I'm not aware of any other home remedies but maybe some other TDKers are, so keep checking back.

  9. Thanks JCat.... I appreciate it. Chloe looks better today than she did yesterday and the day before. However it sounds like she is really congested. I am still doing the steam showers to help relieve the congestion but still concerned. I hope the clavamox helps with this new issue now. When i hold her close i can hear the rattle in her chest. I am just so ready for her to get over this uri.

  10. Poor Chloe! Maybe call your vet and ask to bring her in for a recheck if you do not see an improvement when the med course is done. Sometimes the first antibiotic is not enough, and they need to switch to something else. I've gone thru that with a bunch of fosters. Please keep us updated on your babe.

  11. I called my vet today and they said that the congestion is common with a uri and for me to put her in the bathroom and run the hot water for steam showers several times a day. She is still eating and drinking but making a wheezing noise which concerns(only when she is awake). I watched her sleep this afternoon and she was not wheezing while she was asleep, but the moment she was playing she started wheezing. It seems like it doesnt affect her because she will keep playing and eating. Every now and then she will cry and when i pick her up she is fine but still hear the wheezing. Should i be really worried? I am following everything that the vet has told me and i have chloe rae on clavamox and she gets it twice a day. Does she need another antibiotic? Will another antibiotic clear the congestion and wheezing or does that go away on its on? I have been doing a lot of reading and see the same things that i am doing. I just hope there is not any other underlying cause that is affecting her. When should i take her back to the vet? She has been on clavamox since monday. She seems better from monday but the wheezing is still concerning me.

  12. CRM, if she is playing and eating then try not to worry. You are doing everything right and if Chloe needs to go back to the vet, she will let you know by either stopping eating or stopping playing and becoming lethargic. You need to give the antibiotics a chance to kick in. Of course you are worried but it sounds like you have a bright, strong little kitten there, and as long as it is only the wheezing that is concerning you, and as long as she seems to be improving, not getting worse, it sounds like she is on the mend. But these things don't go away in a day or two, you do need to give them a bit longer :-)

  13. CRM, it sounds like you're doing all the right things and now it's just waiting for the antibiotics to kick in. It is a stressful time but you're coping. Just keep on giving her lots of loving.

  14. Just keep it up, honey. Ruggles went through three scrips of Clavamox and I had him in the bathroom every night for a week, getting him steamed out.

Ruggles is still prone to colds and URIs, but who cares? He's big and healthy and beautiful, and the sweetest little 16-lb kitten you ever saw!
