Need the TDK good vibes

(31 posts)
  1. First time I've ever asked for this, but, please send me the good TDK vibes. I am a total dental phobe, despite having been a sales rep in the dental business. I think I need a root canal (my first) and a self-diagnosis ... but I have to go to a new dentist tomorrow or Thursday, and I am totally freaked out about this!

  4. Thank y'all; I'm just so scared...

  5. make sure they numb you up really good. my dad had one without painkiller and he said he nearly kicked a hole in the ceiling...

also, do not eat crunchy or spicy food for a couple of days afterward. i ate salsa and chips the day after and paid dearly for it...

  6. ((((KM)))) I'm sorry about your having to go to the dentist. I don't mind dentists at all, but get freaked out over going to the doctor, so I know the feeling. I hope everything goes well for you.

  8. Way to make KM feel better, Cheri. And how could anyone have a root canal without pain killer?

Not everyone has pain with root canals. I had one a few years ago and was very worried beforehand but I had no pain at all...not during the procedure or afterward. I ate solid food that night.

  9. KM...good vibes coming your way. I had a root canal a few years ago and it was nothing...I was like Dee, no pain during, or after.

  10. I've had a few and they weren't nearly as bad as I had thought they would be. You'll be just fine, KM!

  11. From a dentists daughter you will be fine. Dentistry has come so far it really won't be bad and YOU will feel much better. Nothing more annoying than a bad tooth. Hugs to you!

  12. Since having so many surgeries I have had SIX root canals and slept through every one (no they didn't knock me out, just nothing better to do at the time). Now they have a laser that numbs you, no shots necessary. Don't be afraid to ask for more numbing meds if needed. Trust me, you are not alone. I was always amazed how many people were scared of MY dad!

  13. another story is that my mom had a root canal in the morning and went to work that same afternoon...

Posted 1 year ago by CSBM #

  14. Wow, thank you all.. I'm feeling a little better about this. MC, I'll be sure to ask about the laser, that is just what I need.

  15. It's sort of a little light stick thing they put around the area they are working on. It numbs things and if and when they give a shot you have no idea.

  16. Kittymom, sending you hugs and positive thoughts. I absolutely hate going to the dentist as I have such a small and sensitive mouth. I broke a tooth a couple of weeks ago and on the recommendation from my boss for her dentist I went and found I have to get a crown. This involves drilling which also scares me. Went to the dentist last week to have a temporary crown put on while they make the permanent crown. The whole time she was drilling, I said the Lord's prayer and Hail Mary's over and over as I was very scared of feeling the pain I normally feel even with novacaine. They seemed to hear me as I made it through with almost no discomfort.

  17. I forgotten to say that my dentist is very good and I now trust her. Also I mentioned to the dentist I am a coward when it comes to coming to the dentist and she pointed to a small frame on the wall that said we help cowards or something like that. Anyways, you can inform of your fear and ask for the special laser or possibly some sort of light sedative.

  18. I have never been knocked out for a root canal--had 2. I never felt anything and I am a dentist pansy! Dentist will work with you--if they do not, do not stay! I bet you have choices of being knocked out or numbed--you do what you will feel most comfortable with. Fear is very powerful emotion. Prayers of peace to you.

  19. I'm sorry you have to face this, Kittymom. It doesn't do any good for anyone to tell you things will be fine, so I won't.

I know you will tell the dentist how scared you are before he/she starts the work. That way the dentist will be super gentle and understanding. If she/he pooh-poohs your concerns, find another one.

Can you get someone to go with you? That use to help me. Just knowing someone was sitting in the waiting room, reading out-of-date Highlight magazines calmed me down a lot. Eventually I started dating my dentist and that made everything fine. However, that's a pretty extreme step to take just to get a tooth worked on.

  20. Oh, KM - I so understand!!!! I am personally terrified of dentists because I had such a bad experience as a child. But we have a dentist here who is so understanding and kind. And - he hides instruments! Let him/her know that you are nervous and I'm sure that they will take pains to put you at ease!

    Mucho, mucho hugs!!!!

  21. Okay - again something I know too much about - I have had a root canal and root planing due to gingivitis in the past - I know just about the best thing to ask for from a patients point of view: ask if laughing gas/(nitrous oxide) is available - it was the best thing I could have asked for - I am TERRIFIED of needles and this made it so much easier to deal with - I was able to have the work needed with less novacaine (meaning less shots) and it was easier on everyone involved - especially ME (the only one who truly counted) lol!!

  22. A friend of mine had a root canal done recently and was sooo happy. She said it did not hurt, it was done with a computer and it didn't take long at all. She also was able to go out and do things that afternoon. I think you will be glad you had the root canal instead of losing the tooth KM. Prayers for a fast visit to the dentist.

  24. Sending TLC hang in there hugs...actully just had one in July/not as bad as I remembered plus I was the queen for a day with my "crown"! The bill/even w/insurance is what ususally hurts the most!

  25. How was your dental search KM?

Posted 1 year ago by SoxsMom #

  26. Oh, KM, I do not know how I missed this thread! Prayers to you that everything went well (((KM))) I am such a sissy-la-la when it comes to pain so even for cavities I have my dentist give laughing gas and they don't think twice, they will just do it if you ask. And if they get going and you are in pain, don't be afraid to ask for more or tell them to stop!

  27. I hate to admit this, but the dentist is my worst fear. I've been hurt too many times and only go when I have a problem. KM, I hope that your visit went well and you stayed comfortable and hope everything is ok. Much love, and sympathy, Mama Lynn

  28. Thanks y'all... My appointment is Tuesday at 10:30am. Gives me enough time to mentally prepare, and, I may lose a few lbs between now and then because I'm not eating much ;-) I know I'm being foolish to be so afraid, but I am

Posted 1 year ago by kittymom #

  29. KM, *plops on nursing cap* you cannot afford to lose a few lbs!!!!!! Please call and let your dentist know that you are nervous. He will have heard it before because lots of us have dentist phobias. And he can be ready with some "happy med's" for you.

Now - go forth and eat pate!!!!!!

Posted 1 year ago by WillowandWindismom #

  30. Ohhh, pate! I hadn't thought of that... I am brushing and rinsing with hydrogen peroxide 3X a day til the appointment. (My idea, because I know it can't hurt & may help). I did tell the receptionist that I am a 'sissy' about any kind of dental procedures. She said not to worry ~ Of course, that's easy for her to say ;-)
