I went and bought a humidifier for Yoko. She hasn't started on solid foods yet, so I'm having to force feed her.. I hate it. It makes me feel awful. Could I be making matters worse by force feeding her?! Nothing comes out of her nose, but she starts sneezing. I've also been mixing her formula with Pedialyte in hopes of keeping her hydrated. I really do think that Dear Prudence's death was just more than we could handle. She has slept inside my shirt all day and cries when I attempt to leave her in her basket. I am going to see if the vet will see Yoko tomorrow. I'm not positive what really caused Dear Prudence's death. I'm assuming her bladder had been busted because of the way she died. I know she had a blockage and he used a syringe to empty her bladder. She was screaming when he attempted to cath her and I was bawling hysterically, so I left the room. (I'm pregnant and terribly hormonal, not to mention these babies have spent every moment with me for the past 2 weeks. Animals really are my weakness.) When I came back, he informed me that he had emptied her bladder and it was clear, no blood. But he doubted if her blockage could be cleared. He told me to take her home and if she didn't urinate with 24 hrs, I should bring her back and have her euthanized. She was listless in the car, but I thought she was just exhausted and traumatized. Then she started seizing in my arms. It only lasted a moment, so I went ahead and headed home. I made it about 2 minutes from the house when she started gasping and crawling up my shirt. I knew she was in pain, so I told the driver to take me straight to the nearest vet.. I had to have her put to sleep. She died about 1 minute later. I now wish I would have gotten up, fed her, and had her euthanized when the catheter didn't work. I just feel SO guilty. I'm not upset with the vet. He did what he could to save her. I haven't told him about Dear Prudence's death yet, because I still can't talk about it without sobbing. Thank you all, for your kind and helpful words though! I'm hoping Yoko will pull through.

Dittle, I'm so so sorry, and so sorry to hear about little Yoko. She needs a vet as soon as possible and to be started on antibiotics for the URI. You are not making things worse by force feeding her, she needs to eat, just take it carefully and gently, and make sure she's always upright and on all fours when you feed her. I'm glad you're mixing the formula with pedialyte. If there's an emergency vet where you are, I would take her there now, given what happened to Prudence, I would want to get her into an emergency appointment ASAP and antibiotics ASAP.
Poor little Dear Prudence. It doesn't sound to me like the vet busted her bladder, though of course it's very possible, it sounds like the blockage had just taken its toll and she went into a kind of toxic shock. It doesn't sound like the vet expected her to live. Poor, darling little girl. I'm so sorry.
You need to take care of yourself too, if you're pregnant. Be very careful around litterbox issues, always wear gloves and wash your hands very thoroughly, you don't want to get toxoplasmosis.

No worries, I'm very careful. My mate is on litter box duty. (He's absolutely thrilled.. not so much.) And everyone allowed to handle the girls (which isn't very many) is required to wash with anti-bacterial before and after.
How often do you recommend I use the humidifier? I can't get Yoko into the Doc until tomorrow afternoon. Also, I fostered several cats from our local shelter last year, so I have tetramyacin (It's an eye ointment we used if the cats had watery eyes & noses.) Would this be ok to use until I can get her into the vet? Her eyes & nose really aren't bad, but I don't want them to get that way.

Dittle, they are probably going to give yoko some antibiotics. I have some concerns about that vet though . . . Not sure about the teramycin - its a cortisone based med, for swelling and inflamation. I dont know if a herpes infection should be getting cortisone. Rather just wipe her eyes down with some warm salty water.
IMO, dear prudence was probably very sick from the toxins that had been buidling up in her system because she couldnt urinate, and she was most probably having kidney failure. Unfortunately there isnt much that they can do for those types of cases. That being said though, I dont understand why the vet would send her home knowing the blockage wasnt cleared, and without giving her any kind of medication (like antibiotics for a cystytis or something), or even just some pain relief. Basic calculation --> if the blockage is still there, how on earth is she supposed to urinate on her own?? I also dont quite understand how a vet could try inserting a catheter into a cat's bladder without sedating them first, which is why in my guess the procedure wasnt successfull to begin with. I find it deplorable that he sent her home knowing there is really no way the situation could get better - I can only imagine how hard it must have been watching her die after trying to hard to save her.

We unfortunately hear a lot of tragic stories on TDK and you feel for everyone, but for some reason, Dear Prudence has really, really gotten to me- more than most. Maybe it is her excellent name, her adorable picture, the sweet personality you described so well. I feel for you- and you did everything you could. She is happy now watching over you and her sister.

Hey all! Just wanted to give you a quick update on Yoko. She's doing SO much better! :D I think with antibiotics she's going to make a full recovery. She started on a wet cat food/formula mixture today too. This morning she disappeared and was no where to be found.. apparently, she decided to socialize with our cat Allie. I'm guessing Allie carried her upstairs? Because after tearing my bedroom apart, I found her meowing for me in our upstairs bathroom (where the cat feeder and litter box are located.) I'm just so relieved she's feeling better. She's definitely more of a snuggler now. She spends all day asleep on my chest and doesn't even dodge my kisses anymore. (She has always been the independent one, Dear Prudence was my snuggle bug.) Thank you all so much for your advice. You've helped me more than you know.

It would be really cute if Allie decides Yoko is her kitten, especially since that will make training and cleaning much easier for you. It's just as likely, though, that Allie went upstairs and Yoko struggled her way up the stairs to follow Allie. Kittens learn to climb up things at an early age. If your stairs are carpeted, I bet the little imp can scoot right up them.
