  1. I have a rather perverse love of the pictures of the beasties...

In person...I am of the firm opinion if it has more than 6 legs and lives on land it has no excuse for existing. I have beaten my fear down to the point of not screaming in terror but it takes a supreme effort of will to face any arachnid down.

I even have issues with motion pictures of the things. I almost cannot get through the Shelob seen in LOTR and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets leaves me agreeing with Ron, "Why couldn't he say follow the butterflies?

  2. Shelob scared the h**l out of me in the book. I think I shut my eyes during the movie.

  3. LOL! I don't mind spiders at all...it's snakes and bats that get to me! And mice, too! When we lived in Hawaii, we had a cane spider in our living room, crawling up the wall! They are HUGE!!! My MIL was there visiting and she almost had a heart attack. Hubs put a container over it and took it outside :)

  4. I have to agree with OW... I am fascinated by spiders. My husband and son, however.... not so much. The weta looks like what we call a Jerusalem Cricket or Potato Bug... which don't get as big as a weta. Silly me, I thought a weta was more of a beetle, like a Palmetto bug or a (yuck) cucaracha..

  5. I don't usually get scared of spiders. If they are particularly nasty (black widows, brown recluse) or really big and right in my face I can get startled or eeeeekkkky. If they are up near the ceiling I leave them alone, if they are getting in the way I relocate them. They do a very important job.

I only got close enough to take a pic...my knight in shining armor can come home and kill it!

  8. At first blush all you see is the Uhaul truck. Makes the "my knight in shining armor can come home and kill it!" as interesting as the pet comment in a showing appointment scheduler on a house for sale ("Lady tied in basement") or the Thrifty Nickle ad to give away "Free to good home half female Siamese kitten"

Then I zoomed in and saw the large garden spider.

  9. Oh NO!! Those spiders are nice - common garden spider. I can guarantee you you will NEVER have one of those in your house. They'd rather be dead than be anywhere near people. They like quiet spots where they can weave their webs to catch insects. Please dont kill it.

  10. LOL AM... I guess that Uhaul truck had perfect timing.
I've gotten comments on FB (and the two of you) saying it's a garden spider, I'm glad to know that... Skyron, you'll be glad to know it still lives, for now at least...

  12. That warning is completely insufficient!

  13. Nah, I've seen bigger baboon spiders. Biggest one I ever saw had an a** the size of a chicken egg. I ran, swiftly, far, screaming like a madwoman (the neighbors came to see what was wrong). It always amazes me how far I can leap in a single bound when there is a spider near. Thankfully, it was in my grandmothers garden, and nowhere near my house . . .

  15. Oh my, who created such an evil website???? LOL.

We were looking at the web last night and discovered a SECOND spider. Needless to say, hubby practiced his batting skills with a metal shower curtain rod on them last night. He managed to put a hole in one the screens of the windows *sigh*. Got up this morning....One of them was back on it's web. I think there will be a repeat show in our front yard tonight....

  16. Good luck with the spider Abigail. Is it possible to relocate the spider elsewhere, like the neighbours?

  17. so ironically enough, i had to get our gardener to climb a huge tree today to go get a birdie that was stuck in spiderweb. If it wasnt so high up, i would have tried taking a picture . . .

  18. Ohhhhhh poor bird, thank you for having it rescued Sky.

  19. I have honestly tried to make peace with a spider that lives in my garage stairwell. I hate flies, and he (she?) catches lots of them. For this reason, I decided to let it live. It's up high on a light fixture. I still dread walking under it going in and out of the garage.

Spiders that get in the house are CJ's business. If she doesn't find them first, all I do is show them to her--and Gulp! They're gone!

  20. LOL, Lisa. I have to admit I 'allow' some spiders to live in the corners of some rooms. Occasionally upon opening a kitchen cupboard one will casually stroll out, but I just let them go about their business. It the good old Daddy Longlegs spider. When their webs get too big and obvious I have a tidy up and put the spiders outside.

  21. That's what this one in the stairwell is, and he and I really have an old fashioned detente going. He's up way too high for CJ to ever reach him (of course, as sure as I say that...)

  22. That guy is very stupid for using a lighter. Next time she sees a spider, hope he aint around, if he is, he needs to tell her to kill it.
