  1. Yesterday I was watching an episode of the Galloping Gourmet on the Cooking Channel. I had forgotten how hysterical he was! He made this just nasty looking dish called Baby's Head Pudding - really, it looked quite disgusting. And I thought that there couldn't possibly really be such a dish. So I looked it up and low and behold..................

Have any of y'all ever had this?

  3. You should have seen his show today, 2P. I was ironing and had it on - he was making some kind of a dessert in a Charlotte mold that he described as "alcoholic jelly". And he made such a mess! I was laughing so hard! Then I got curious and goggled to see if he was still with us. He's 76 now and promotes healthy cooking because his wife has had a stroke and a heart attack. But gosh, he was just so funny on that show!

  4. I had to google him too, and change my post ! I thought he was still doing the show when I saw your post. I always liked that he brought up an audience member to sit and eat with him. I had forgotten that until I read the wikipedia account. Such a character !!

  5. Sounds a lot like a steak and kidney pie. My uncle ordered it at the Empress one time. It smelled good but I turned down a taste. I really enjoyed watching him pre food network days. I agree with the messes, was so funny because the dishes were all so "upper crust" but he would fling ingredients around like Julia Childs! And the titles of his dishes!

  6. The shows on the Cooking Channel are reruns of the show. Just the clothes the people have on are funny - until I remember that I have things that look amazingly like them in my closet! They also show reruns of The French Chef with Julia Child. So funny - I don't think that she meant to be funny but she was!

  7. The Galloping Gourmet actually began his career in New Zealand!

  8. That's true, they inflicted him on us way before they sent him over to you. Famous here for drinking more wine on the show than he ever put in the food... Some of my earliest TV memories are Graham Kerr in black and white...

  9. PS just imagine if you had friends round for dinner and they asked what you were having and you said, 'Baby's head pudding'...!

    Shades of Hannibal Lector...

  14. Hmmmm, it sounded like a steak and kidney pudding to me (old English fare, suet, yurgh) but this is a nicer name for it when you add oysters: Pickwick Pudding (since it appears in the Pickwick Papers):

And it IS known as Babby's Yead (Baby's Head) if you're in Wigan or Bolton...

The things you learn when you google, lol!

  16. Ewww... LOL... remember watching some episodes of the galloping gourmet on PBS, along with all Julia Childs' episodes. When I was first married, my girlfriend and I watched her shows and tried to duplicate her recipes. Even got the cookbooks ;-) Good thing I'm on a self-inflicted liquid diet til I see the dentist next week because I don't think I'd like to try the pudding right now....
