  1. Morning all. The kits are so excited about their long weekend! The orangies are squeezing fresh juices, the Russian Blues are whipping up the eggs and the Scottish Folds are having a fry-up! The Maine Coons are setting up the tables and chairs and the cafe is open!

  2. Good morning, KYK! No long weekend for me, but a short week as we leave for Spain next Thursday. The down side is, we get back on a Thursday and I have to work the next day - I'm going to be a zombie.

How are you and yours today?

Posted 1 year ago by Kilroy #

  3. I'm doing great Kilroy. It is nice and cool out and so far nice and quiet in the office. I am so excited for your trip to Spain. I can't wait to hear about your adventures and see pictures! I got to visit Barcelona briefly last November and would love to go back.

  4. I wish we were going to Barcelona, I've heard nice things about it, but it's not on the itinerary this time. Guess we'll have to go back :)

  5. Morning from pleasantly cooler but overcast Milwaukee! Thanks Kilroy for organizing the kits and starting the Cafe! Boy, everything smells yummy...I have a hankering for some scrambled eggs with cheese and tomatoes and my usually java grande! Waves to Kilroy...with wishes for all who stop in to have a good day with feel better wishes for those in need...later.

  6. Hi everyone! It's been a busy week - there is a lot to do in the final days before the teachers and students come back. Looking forward to the weekend; next week is my week from h*** - school starts. Pre-occupied with neice and her hubby this week. He lost both parents last week, one day apart. They were only 58 & 59 and died of totally different causes. I've been caring for my grand-nephewkitties while neice and hubby attend to his family.
*A beautiful Maine Coon, looking a lot like my late Jiggs, personally serves Joan a fresh-squeezed oj and a bacon and cheese omlet with cheesy hashbrowns.*

  7. Oh Joan, how awful for your nephew-in-law. I just can't imagine...

Posted 1 year ago by Kilroy #

  8. Sorry to hear that about his family Joan, I hope they (and you!) get some rest at some point..
I have one more day of teaching for this week...14 classes a week is going to kill me!
I've got a little tuxie cat named Checkers meowing at me, I suppose I should feed the little guy and start brewing some coffee...

  9. Hi, Everyone! We had a storm blow through last night and today it feels like there's just a touch of fall in the air. It won't last, though. September is traditionally a very hot month in Texas. It's really windy today and I'm just hoping that it blows through because we have signed up for a 62 mile bike ride tomorrow. I've already put Mr.WWM on high alert that if the winds are greater than 15 mph, I'm doing a shorter ride.

I have a hair cut appointment today. I wish I knew what the heck to do with my hair. I spent three years letting it grow only to get frustrated and cut it off. But I don't like the cut that I have right now which can only take me in one direction - shorter.

Kilroy, you are going to absolutely love Spain. But if you're going to big cities, do be extra careful about pick pockets - they have a big problem with that in Spain. In Barcelona they warned us everywhere to be careful. Mr.WWM wore cargo pants and that worked great because the pockets are on the front of the leg and they button down. I just didn't carry anything and kept my camera in my pants pocket. And no flashy jewelry because they will spot it. I'm sure that it's the same in any big city.

  10. We've definitely gotten the warning about the pickpockets, WWM, from the tour company and all the guidebooks. Luckily, cargo pants or cargo shorts are Mr. K's standard uniform (oh the life of a retired guy :) )

  11. A money belt that goes inside your waistband is a great place for passport and other I.D.

  12. Good Morning on this cold day, 59, brrrr to me!
Kilroy, your trip sounds like it will be a great one!!
I'm so sorry Joan....the niece that came to mind immediately was T---n. Is it her hubs who lost his parents? How awful any way you look at it :(
This Sunday is our annual Bratfest celebration in my hometown. We always work making sandwiches. I like to watch the people mostly!
I'll grab a hot cuppa joe on my way out!

Posted 1 year ago by katthays #

  13. Katt, Brattfest? YUM! Love me some good old fashioned brats! My grandmother was Swiss and she always fixed the white Brats which are hard to find in my area. Eat a few for me with lots of brown mustard.

    Posted 1 year ago by KYKAT 12 23 #

  14. Okay, KK...we get to eat the broken brats and dogs! Can't put those in sandwiches you know :))) They do have the best brats...they 'marinate' them in beer for hours, overnight, I think! I never heard of white brats!

  15. Morning everyone! I am already exhaused. I was up by 6 to do some laundry before school. Then at 8:30 I headed to school and got there at 9:30 (its an hour away). All of the traffic lights were out! It was chaos.

I finally made it to the parking garage where the lights were also out and realized there is a campus wide (over 4,000 acre campus with dozens and dozens and dozens of buildings) blackout.

My classes got canceled and in the hour wait until I found out all 3 were canceled, I heard 4 ambulences in total probably due to traffic confusion without the lights. I headed down the hour drive home, and here I am now, ready for lunch.

I'm not used to driving 2 hours a day 5 days a week, so I have been getting stabbing pain in 2 spots in my back and weak pain all over my entire back as well. TGIF

  16. I love brats! Introduced to them when visiting Wisconsin (+ I just put them on my shopping list). Hmmm, think I'll do the beer marinade!
Kat, yes it's T. Not sure if word made it to JR. Possibly, as she is close to her cousins, but I am going to text her later. We're having computer problems so I can't email her.
Due to said computer problems, I may not "see" anyone for the weekend. Enjoy! I'm going to rest, rest, rest if at all possible!

Posted 1 year ago by JoanfromNewJersey #

  17. Ooh Gini, the blackout sounds scary. Too bad they couldn't send out some sort of campus-wide notice via e-mail or something. Glad you're home safe.

Posted 1 year ago by Kilroy #

  18. A lot of people still had their classes in the dark which surprised me, but all 3 of my professors sent out a notice that they were canceling class. I just wish that it was sent out before I got to school. It's a huge waste of gas money and back pain and 3 hours (2 driving, 1 waiting on campus) for nothing. I'm just glad to be home. :)

  19. Gini, a lumbar support pillow for the car might help. Also Audiobooks will help the time pass!

    Posted 1 year ago by KYKAT 12 23 #

  20. Oh no, Joan...I am so sorry. I am glad they have family like you, close.
Yes, glad you got back safely, Gini!

Posted 1 year ago by katthays #

  21. Thanks KyKat and Katthays! My birthday is in 2 1/2 weeks so I asked my mom for a back support for the car for my birthday so hopefully that will help. I listen to mix CDs right now but audio books are a good idea!

  22. Stopping by(waves to Gini & Kat) for a warmer on my java. 1/2 more day to go at W__k...yay! Need to wrap things up here for I won't be back until probably Thursday! Oy, phone is ringing...later.

Posted 1 year ago by jeankit #

  23. I'm with ya, JK; I need more java too.

Posted 1 year ago by Kilroy #

  24. Can someone tell me more about audiobooks? I've only ever heard of them. I'll go google it now.

Got some sh**** news today. I'm pre-diabetic. I'm waaaayyy too young to be pre-diabetic. I dont even eat sugar or sweet things. Lots of googling to be done tonight. I'm kinda P.Oed at the dr - just said 'oh, you're pre-diabetic, by the way. Watch your diet, and here's a prescription for glucophage, and come see me again in 3 months.' WTH?? What does 'watch your diet' mean? Obviously no sugars, but what about starches? Fruits? Seriously, i cant believe it.

  25. Here ya go Kilroy/passes pot thru wormhole...drink up & wake up with me this afternoon! I'll probably make a pot at home too I have mucho to do before I hit the road & head north w/R tomorrow!

Posted 1 year ago by jeankit #

  26. Gini, I'm sorry if I'm missing the obvious here, but why does your back start hurting from driving?

Posted 1 year ago by Skyron #

  27. Oh argh, Sky, how useless of the doctor. Here's an article from the New York Times on dietary guidelines for diabetics/prediabetics (NOTE: I am not a health professional, just a looker-up of stuff)

    http://health.nytimes.com/health/guides/nutrition/diabetes-diet/general-dietary-guidelines.html

Posted 1 year ago by Kilroy #

  28. Skyron - audiobooks are books that have been read and recorded on either tape or CD and can be played in your car while driving. So you listen to, rather than read, a book.

Sorry your doc was such a putz ! I know there are several on here who are diabetic and can offer advice. I wish I could remember the thread with all the good recipes for diabetics.

  29. Some of the kids I work with who have dyslexia could really benefit from something like an audiobook with the text with it. We have the regular kiddie stories for them, but not much for older kids. Could be worth it to investigate this further.

Thanks for the article Kilroy. From what I can gather with what I'm reading is that I should probably go find me a nutritionist. I feel like the wind has been knocked out of me. Really wasnt expecting this.

Posted 1 year ago by Skyron #

  30. Skyron, I am surprised he put you on meds if you are pre-diabetic. I am doubly surprised he didn't write you a referral to a nutritionist so that you will know what to eat...especially since he put you on meds! Some meds require that you get a certain amount of carbs at certain times of the day to work effectively. Did he have you fast before doing your bloodwork? If not then he is not getting an accurate reading.

I was diagnosed in January and I had two appointments with a nutritionist to make sure I was eating well. First of all,in general, the carbs you take in should be those that are more complex. Whole wheat breads and pasta instead of white breads and regular pasta. Sweet potoates instead of white potatoes. Fruit that is considered "low glycemic." Veggies are great, especially the green ones. Lean meat is your friend. Lowfat dairy is your friend.

You need to get on the internet and reasearch, research, research. Did he prescribe a blood glucose monitor? If not how in the H**l are you supposed to know if your eating is effective and if the meds drop your sugars down to dangerous levels. I have to test my blood 3-4 times a day to make sure I am keeping things under control.

Exercise is also a key component to keeping your blood sugar down. If possible, I STRONGLY urge you to consult another doctor. Your doc sounds exceedingly irresponsible.
