  1. Hello TDKers!

I have received lots of good advice from all of you even if it was not directly for me! So I thought maybe you could help me out with a couple of issues.
1 - I have to take Pipa and Melon to the vet everytime they need their claws clipped, the vet is not close to home and the kitties sure don't appreciate the ride. So I bought some cat nail clippers. My cats will only let me clip one nail before bunny kicking me to death, not to mention wrigling themselves out of my arms and loudly complaining. What to do? How do you do it? Pipa is small and loves push her paws on my stomach to get into a confy position, sadly se stretches and brings out her razor sharp claws. It hurts :(
2 - Some of you talked about this new gadget for brushing cats that worked really well. Do not remember the name. Someone remember it please?

Thanks for your help in advance!

  2. Pipa's Mum- the gadget is called the Furminator - really works great. I ordered mine (after researching for best prices) at entirelypets.com. Don't know if they ship to Spain but worth a look.

  4. Mami de Pipa,

    Re: claw trimming

I've had my fair share of kitties who do not appreciate the price of good grooming (that is, the necessity of keeping claws trimmed in a way that does not involve the shredding of furniture or drywall). Neither of these methods is perfect, but I have had some success with them (I think because I decide to be more stubborn than they are).

    1. Wait until Kittylove is sound asleep, then quickly clip what you can before they awaken too much.

2, Wrap Kittylove in a thick towel (it helps if you have someone else hold the cocooned kitty), exposing only the head and the paw you are working on at the moment. ADVISO: that "head" part contains pointy ends too, and most angry cats aren't afraid to use it if no other options are available!

  5. LOL! You are SO right Ginny, the head part does have point ends! Thanks for the advice. The trouble is that once I have put the cat in the 'burrito' they wriggle, complain loudly as if they were being savegely murdered.
Will try the 'attack while they sleep' tactic.
    Thank you so much.

  6. Hi Pipa's Mum!
Bob hates having his claws trimmed, but it really isn't that hard. I sit him down in front of me on the floor with his back to me (so he can't get me!).I do this on a tile floor, so there is nothing his back legs can grab a hold on and push off on (the tile is too slippery). Then I just sit him up, squeeze he little paw till the claw comes out and clip it. I try not to do it in a hurry, because I don't want to miss, and anyway, the little guy has nowhere to go when sitting there wedged between my knees. I just use a regular big, people nail clipper - nothing fancy. I noticed that the Bob will start howling as soon as the clipper touches the claw, so I try to slip the claw into theclipper without touching it, until I'm ready to clip - this way he doesn't freak out til the claw is clipped!
Another thing: the little guy will scream and howl as if his Mama is inflicting serious pain on him - NOT the case! Don't let Melon and Pipa's howling keep you from doing this. It takes me only about two minutes.

  7. Pipa's Mum, brave woman, I tried it a couple of times with my horde...easier to convince them not to scratch furniture....at least in my case it was...

  8. AZDebra - same here with my 21. Plenty of scratching posts and cat condo styles to keep them from the furniture. The only time their nails are clipped is during a vet visit. I am just lucky that most like to be brushed, but clipping, even when I started when they were young, is just too too much for me. :)

  9. I find the easiest way to trim claws is:
Lay cat on your lap on their back with the head at your chest. This way I can kiss their head when they look up at me. I use a cat claw clipper. It's easier to take the claw when they are facing away from you. I have always done it this way. Gavin doesn't like it, but the other cats just lay there so good for me. Gavin tries to get away, but I just kiss him and talk sweet to him. I even do this with the cat who is staying here. She is good for me as well. I cannot believe how fast her claws grow, and are like needles!! She had better enjoy them now, as she will be declawed once they get the new house and new couch. :(

  10. I find it actually helps with some of mine, I let them smell the clippers & then tell them what I am going to do, in a nice calm voice. I also talk to them seally sweet while I'm doing it. Of course I do have a couple that act like i'm killing them.

  11. I do that too, Bumblebee. I lay Sylvester on his back in my lap with his head closest to my chesk. I give him lots of kisses before I start. He lets me do about the first paw before he starts to squirm. I manage to get all four paws before he wriggles out. Of course Sylvester is such a mellow kitty that he doesn't say much while I am doing it.

  12. Mine seem to be calmer about the nail trimmimg when we do it in the bathroom. They know they can't get away, so they have to submit. But April still gets very vocal about it.
