Last night FF and I had dinner and were talking about his trip to Dallas this weekend and I got all bummed out. I said "You didn't ask me to go with you!" It is the fire department yearly Chicago Bears football trip and he said I wouldn't want to go with a bunch of crude men. Rather he suggested WE should plan a vacation to go somewhere. He told me I need to use this time while he is away to plan where I would like to go. We are looking at staying in the USA and not traveling abroad. I want to do something "different" not tourist traps like Las Vegas or LA or anything like that. Any fun places you have been or know of?

I've always wanted to go to Hershey, PA! I've heard that it's loads of fun AND there's chocolate there, too! :)

What sort of activities? Nature? History? Museums? Personally I love the USA's national and regional parks, many have reasonable accomodations right in the parks.
In the Hershey area there are many things to do and you can have a theme - did you know that most of the USA's junk food comes from central PA? You can tour the factories, as well as the Harley Davidson factory. Amish country is near there as well.

Depends on what type of environment you and FF enjoy. Do you want entirely away from the Big City environment and out into somewhere rural or do you want a different urban area with lots of attractions? Do you want crowds and excitement or relative solitude and quiet? Once you decide which type of vacation you want then you can focus on where to make that happen.
This time of year the trees start being lovely in the northern woods if you like that sort of trip.
Also, if you want a more urban vacation, St. Louis is only a half day drive from Chicago. There are tons of attractions here that are surprisingly affordable. And there is the Lincoln museum in Springfield IL that is quite interesting.
St. Louis offers, among other things: the Arch, a tower that overlooks the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers, the zoo (which is world class and has free admittance, only pay for parking), botanical gardens, butterfly house, Daniel Boone home, Grants Farm (still open on weekends through October if I remember correctly), Cahokia Mounds, and lots more.
Or you could vacation somewhere along the lake either on the Wisconsin side or Michigan side. I'm sure there are many wonderful spots for that.
You might look and see what state parks are within a reasonable distance and what types of cabin accomodations those have, etc.

Ditto on all the suggestions above, but really don't count out Vegas either....there is a lot to do there thats free or costs very little...buy a 24 hr bus pass (2 years ago it was $5) and see everything on the strip...the Bellagio fountains, Fremont street light show in the evening, the pirate show, the white tigers....actually no matter where you decide to go it will be great. Do you have a membership to your local zoo? If so find out if being a member allows you free entry to zoos and gardens and such around the nation...I know ours does, and ours includes museums too.

Also, depending on yours and FF's schedules and budgets, don't count out doing some mini stay at home vacations where you dedicate an entire day to enjoying some attraction in your home area that you never seem to get around to seeing, having your meals out for the day, and generally play tourist in your own home town. Amazing how often we never get around to seeing the attractions in our own backyard while traveling elsewhere to see something similar.

I'd LOVE to go to DC again. I didn't think I'd enjoy it (too educational!) but it was AMAZING. Just going to the Smithsonian is, at least, a one day excursion.

Wow! Amazing suggestions. Thanks. He asked me what the longest time I could take off at once. I told him I get four weeks but don't want to do it all at once. I think we are looking at a week. I know we want to get away from Chicago. FF grew up in the city itself so he wants away from here. No las Vegas with him, he's ADHD and I think all the lights, activities and actions would have him bouncing off the walls (or I would strangle him by the end of the week). I know Wisconsin bores the heck out of him so I need a mix of activity but not overload. Florida is also out cause his mom lives there and she would expect a visit. I was also thinking out east or maybe Hawaii.

What kind of activities do you both like doing? Hilton Head Island, SC is an awesome place to go, but maybe not unless you like the beach, tennis and golf.
Oh!!! I have it, MC!!! Gatlinburg, TN is an awesome place to go and it's beautiful this time of year:

There's a lot of good ideas here, but I have to second FH with Hershey, Pa and Gatlinburg, TN--very different from each other, but both great places to go.

Fort DeSoto
Salvador Dali Museum
Tiera Verde
Bellaire Beach

Hershey, Pa is great--even on the main road thru town, the street lights are shaped like Hershey's Kisses and even had the little tag sticking out of the top. And this time of year the mountains will be really pretty with fall colors.

If someone offered me a trip to the US right now, I would LOVE to:
a) Go leaf peeping in New England, how could anyone want to do anything else in the US in the fall? (In NZ all our native trees are evergreen so trees changing colour is a BIG DEAL, it doesn't happen here... well, to the odd import!)
b) Go to Washington DC -- the museums, the ethnic restaurants, the historic districts!
c) San Francisco.
d) New York.
e) Ooh, ooh, New Orleans!

Thanks Jcat, for the shoutout! MC, I think the when may be an important part of your decision... upstate NY and Maine are great right now, but not in a couple of months, and not that different climate wise from Chicago. I lived outside of DC for several years, and loved all of the things you could do from that as a base, colonial williamsburg, Mt Vernon, Monticello, and the museums are incredible. I also like the outer banks of NC, for a more laid back quiet time experience, romantic walks on the beach, etc... but of course the best place for you to come is New Orleans... our best weather is Oct-March, even the coldest weather rarely hits freezing overnight. You can see plantations, do swamp tours, enjoy historic and recovering New Orleans, our top notch zoo and aquarium, and the food... do I really have to talk about that? AND you could have a personal tour guide if you were so inclined, but wouldn't need one - the city is walkable in the best historic districts, and you have night life too... y'all come down!
