Little Kitten Rescue

(31 posts)
  1. So last night my family rescued a kitten that had been abandoned by it's mother under our house. We figured out that its neck was lodged inbetween two bordes and the queen could not remove it. :/ So we have it now. It's the cutest little orange kitty. It's eyes just opened yesterday I believe, so it's only a few weeks old. It's been drinking the special kitten formula that we got for it and going to the bathroom fine. The thing is, it won't stop howling. This kitten can scream! The only time it's not screamig is when it's eating or sleeping. Last night I gave her a belly rub because I thought that she might have colic. Was I right? Right now she is in my shirt and quiet. lol Will this screaming and mewing stop anytime soon? :)

  2. Thanks so much for saving the poor little darling! The screaming will calm down eventually Poor kitty is just missing his momma, thats why he stops when he is close to you, he needs your warmth and the sound of your heartbeating.

  4. Most likely the little angel is scared and she doesn't know what to do without her mommy and siblings. It helps if you keep them close to you, they like your body heat and also the ticking of your heart will remind her of mom so she will be quieter. Some cats/kittens are just talkers, some aren't. You can also get her a stuffed animal (like beenie baby size) so she can curl up with it when she is sleeping to remind her of her siblings.

Poor pumpkin :( Thank you for taking her in! Make sure she sees a vet soon to get a checkup and welcome to TDK!

  5. Thanks so much for all of your answers! We put a stuffed animal in the little basket this morning and she curled up and went to sleep for a few hours. :)She is kind of calming down with the crying now. I think she is getting used to the fact that mama is not coming back.. which is kind of sad really.. :/ We even put her outside in a box and some blankets for a bit to see if the mom might take her back, but she didn't. :/ SO. I guess that we are her family now! :) We will take her to a vet when she is old enough to get her her shots and a checkup. But she seems fine for the time being. : )

  6. Nat, it's great that you are going to adopt this little one! Does he/she have a name yet?

Even though the little one is not old enough for its' vaccinations, please make sure to take it to the vet anyways for a checkup right away. Chances are it has worms from being outside with it's mommy and siblings and you need to check it for fleas as well. Fleas will cause a kitten to be anemic and worms will prevent a kitten from getting enough nutrition. You want to make sure she is healthy from the start and then your vet will let you know when to bring it back for pokes/spay or neuter and other wellness checks.

Good luck with your orangie! Please keep us updated and remember...we like cute kitten pictures :) *hint hint*

  7. Nat,are you keeping the wee one warm enough? Without their sibs they have a hard time maintaining their temperature. If you put a hot water bottle(covered) or a heating pad on the low setting(covered and to one side) she will do better. When not snuggled next to you of course!

  8. Nat welcome to TDK and thank you for saving the little kitten. Everyone's advice is good, and Buttercup has a good point, orangie [until she/he has a name] may be cold.

When I first got Duchess [a 3 week old kitten found by my boyfriend] she wouldn't stop making this piercing loud noise until she was warm. She probably is very cold. I used a heating pad on low with a towel wrapped around it. It's good for her to stay warm since if she is really young she won't be able to regulate her temperature.

Eventually she won't need the heating pad as much. Also, like Roxysmommy said, fleas are fatal if left untreated if she has any. And the vet appointment is critical too. But what it looks like to me is that you are doing a great job, and you are now a new parent! Anyway, make sure orangie is warm, fed, and eliminates and that's all you really need to do to keep her happy until she starts playing around. Good luck and keep us posted!

  9. We are keeping her very warm. I know that you are not supposed to feed them if they're cold too. When we got her in here, she was cold. Her little nose was so pink! :O But i do know that kittens have to be kept seriously warm withought others to cuddle with. :) We dont have a heating pad, but I wrap her in one of those woolly dog blankets. It's very warm. And she is also small enough to fit right in my hand, which I can feel radiates a lot of heat too. :)

We did have her named, Destiny, because she was destined to live. Out under our house for I don't know how long stuck between those bordes! Then my dad told us last night that he wants to name it. :P So, until then. She can be Orangie or Destiny. :P haha

  10. Okay. Little Orangie isn't going poopy. We put a little water in it's formula. But that doesn't seem to be helping! :O

  11. You only got her last night and she probably didn't have anything in her little tummy then. Kittens seem to poop once every couple of days, and she's only on formula so I wouldn't worry too much yet. Powdered KMR does seem to have a slightly constipating effect. You can also try a drop or two of vegetable oil (eg, soy bean, olive or canola) in her formula.

  12. Okay.. Whew! :D Thanks! That makes me feel SOO much better! :)

  13. You're welcome. Click on the pink tags 'poop' and 'constipation' if the problem continues for loads of good previous advice :-)

  14. Okay! Will do!! :)

  15. Ooooh! What a sweetie Orangie is! I love the picture, thank you :)

Listen to Jcat, she always has the best advice. Don't worry about the poops too much yet. Young kittens can go a couple of days without relieving themselves.

  18. A new TDK eensy weensy. Wonderful picture. Wishing you and the baby lots of luck, love and flourishing.

  19. Nat: she is TINY! She makes Duchess look enormous when we got her. As for her not pooping Jcat is right, but with Duchess who could eliminate by herself when I got her, she also didn't poop that often since KMR isn't really a solid so her body isn't really flushing out solids, it's mostly pee. Now that Duchess is eating solids she is pooping everyday! And it's stinky now.

But the vet visit is also important just a check up and to see how old she is, she doesn't look that old, maybe a week or so. But good luck and keep us posted.

  20. Thanks everyone! I feel very welcome! :) She actually went twice tody! lol She is calming down SO much! Right now she is curled up, sleeping, and puring. :) SO adorable!

Haha.. I actually found out today by looking closly that the 'she' is actually a 'he' :P So..haha. Poor thing. It's probably gender conffooosded by now. LOL

  21. Orange kitties are more often males. And they are the most loving and cuddly cats you can find, just ask the people who have one.

Don't worry about gender confusion - those little bits will be coming off anyway - if he thinks he's a girl, he'll never miss them.

Posted 1 year ago by CheetahBoysmommy #

  22. Aww! That's great! I'm glad that we saved the orange on then! :)

Oh my goodness. That made me laugh! I don't know if it was supposed to..but it did. :p hahaha :D This is true, very true. :)

  23. My mother has an orange kitty kind of likes yours, and he LOVE LOVES! my mother, he has to be wherever she is whenever. It's cute though. He's 5 by the way, so severe attachment issues.

Have you decided a name yet?

    Posted 1 year ago by Duchess&&Gabriel #

  24. aww! hmm.. We are between, Fuzzy and Todd I think. lol

Posted 1 year ago by Nat #

  25. Both name are lovely. How's the baby adjusting? If you set up a Catster page we could see updated photos of the sweet little one. Duchess'Mom above has one just click on her avatar picture and it will show you. (I haven't managed to do one yet myself)
