  1. He got neutered yesterday, everything went well so far. This morning it seemed the anestisia wore off, he has an appetite and everything. But it seems like the anestisia hit him again, or possibly he's in pain. He's walking around in circles, and bumping into things again, but this time meowing, like a child would crying. As if in pain. I've been keeping him in his carrier for the most part in the bathroom, where it's quiet. He's sleeping now, hopefully in a few hours he'll be ok.

    Any thoughts?

  2. I have no idea what it could be... sorry..

But I would definately consider just phoning your vet. It could be a normal reaction to the surgery, or it may be an early on set symptom of something.

This doesn't give you much help, sorry about that. But if it concerns you -- then it warrants a call to your vet..

Good luck! I hope he feels better soon!

  3. Watch for redness, and discharge from the surgical area. He could just be sore but you want to be sure and catch a problem early.

  4. I heard it can take up to a day for anestesia to wear off, there's not any discharge, little bit of blood in the morning, but it's because he's all "I wanna run up and down stairs mood" and I think it put stress on it. He's been eating and keeping it down. I think part of it too is he's bored being in his carrier, but if I let him out, he'll run around and start climbing.

  5. Well something horrible happened just now. He started going into convultions. I had rushed him to the vet, they gave him an iv drip for alil, and sedated him. They think he ate something that triggered it. He's passed out on kitty valium right now, sleeping, they think he'll be ok now, but say it could happen again.

I feel so horrible, I don't want him to die. I feel like I did something to fail him.

  6. Oh no Rio Wave! What could he have eaten between being neutered and now that could have done this? I'm wondering if something in the neuter surgery triggered this? I hope and pray that he will be alright.

  7. reaction to the anesthesia?

  8. Could be LS. RW You said he was walking in circles after the surgery bumping into things, was he doing this before surgery?

Posted 1 year ago by Buttercup #

  9. Never before surgery, and he was only doing the walking in circles thing for a lil bit when he was awake. Now he doesn't even walk around, he just starts spazzing. He's sleeping, I'm watching him thru the night to be sure he's ok. Really REALLY don't wanna take him to the 24hr vet. I didn't have the money for the emergency run right now :(.

My dad seriously suggested to just get a new cat....needless to say im quite mad him.

  10. RW please take him to another vet in the morning, the walking in circles and certainly the seizures suggests that your kitten might have had a big problem during his neuter. I'm hoping and praying for the best.

  11. Did the vet give any pain meds? What kind? There is a certain medication that vets use on cats...which is not meant to be used in cats so can cause very bad reactions.

  12. Update:
Fade is doing leaps and bounds better (well not literally), he's no longer confused and walking around. I dont think I was originally clear. The ppl who did the neuter(vet1) is a completely different vet, then the one I took him to yesterday because of the seizure(vet2)I don't think they gave him pain meds. However the spay/neuter vet probably used a cheaper pain killer (30 dollars + 5 for pain med, cant believe that was optional).

I just brought him back to vet2 this morning, they are the most kind vet clinic I have ever been to. I only had 60 dollars, and the bill came out to 175. And they let me get away with only 60, with only my word that I will come back tomorrow and discuss payment of the rest. Not only that, but I accidently gave them my wrong number, so I'm sure they were suspicious this morning when they couldnt get a hold of me! Not only are they letting me get away with this, they're letting me get away with waiting till Thursday to pay. They even saw him 10 minutes before closing on a FRIDAY! Honestly I'm still shocked, vets here in the city are notoriously money hungry (someone wanted 500 dollars for a neuter).

When he tries to get up, and walk around, he acts like he's super drunk, but that's probably because of the valium they gave me. They took out his IV drip thingy, he's drinking LOADS of water if I put his face directly next to the bowl, and food as well. I'm holding back on the food, liquids are important they say.

The current theory (vet theory) is that he licked/ate something off the floor, that was acutely toxic to him, however being on anesthesia, probably caused a more violent reaction then would normally happen. Or he just ate something toxic period, but IDK he's been in his carrier for the most part, every now and then getting out to try to play. They originally thought he had some Hartz flea thing put on him, since it was very similiar symptoms.

Holding him in my arms and "baby talking" him, seems to calm him down. My theory is, now he's so sedated, he can't see anything, and is super scared, so my voice, and holding him calms him.

But i think he's on the fast track to recovery! :)

  13. Hi RM,I'm glad Fade's doing better! I wouldn't completely withhold food though,he needs some nutrition for strength but since he's not quite alert I would just give him supervised little bits of wet food and see how he does. I'm glad you found a good vet!

  14. So glad Fade is doing better! Sending white light for a speedy, full recovery! (((Fade)))

  15. He's doing much better this morning! Thank you everyone for your thoughts and concerns. He seems to want to run around and play, even though he's still super droopy from the valium, although not as much as today. He starts growling when I put him in his carrier, but I don't want him running around getting hurt! I let him alone in the bathroom for a few, so maybe he will tire himself. Well, he attempted to use the litterbox, and succeeded, just didn't suceed getting out of it (poor guy!) He has been eating more, but I'm afraid to give him too much wet food. He's even trying to play with me sometimes.

I didn't have to check on him at all during the night. Hopefully, by Monday, he'll be almost to his full self (I suspect he's going to have cognitive problems afterwards for a time, but we'll jump that hurdle when we get there). Any slight noise, seems to awake him from his Valium-slumber and agitate him, or make him wanna play, so I'm being ever so careful to not make noise. I wish I had the extra money for a pheromone diffuser, perhaps it would help.

Any suggestions on keeping him calmer and in his carrier?

  16. RW, you are doing well with Fade, he knows you love him. Feliway works on some kittens/cats and so does Rescue Remedy, the RR is a bit cheaper and you can administer it by mouth, wet food, on treats, or in the water (4 drops a day)....but I would check with the vet as Fade is taking valium at the moment. If Great Dane comes on or anyone else who's kitties have had a history of seizures.

  17. Ahhh, I don't plan to buy the spray/pheremones yet, maybe monday after I take him back to see the vet. Honestly I have no clue what I'm doing, the last kitten in the past, had a different crisis and didn't make it, and this is the first cat I've had for more then a few weeks, and because I wasn't as attached to him, his passing was sad, but not tremendously life shattering. When Fade dies (be it today, or many, many years from now) it's going to be heart-shattering for me. In fact, every cat I've had has ended in either me having to get rid of it, or the latter, I don't have a good track record. :(

Maybe I can finally get some studying done today!

  18. So glad to hear that he is doing better!

  19. Update:

Fade is just about back to his normal self. I stopped giving the valium yesterday, so hoping the residual side effects will wear off today sometime, they seem to just about wear off. He seems a lil confused, and wants to play with everything around here. Keeps meowing at everything, but I think it's the pain from the neutering. He just needs some rest is all I think. Thanks everyone for your thoughts and concerns!

omg! he's kneading and curling up next to me :), im so happy he's coming back. He's kneading ALOT, and he would NEVER "make biscuits" before. Maybe he's just happy im here?

Posted 1 year ago by rio waye #

  20. So glad your little one is feeling much better! Kneading is one of the best things a kitten can do to show love. I'm int eh same boat as you however, I never had kittens until my husband got me one for last christmas and then we adopted a second from an abuse situation. Thinking far far far ahead, I am going to be absolutely destroyed if they pass on. it's something I think about everyday and it breaks my heart everytime. We can just enjoy the time we have with them and keep them healthy to ensure that they're with us for a VERY long time.

  21. But he's not doing it to me! he's doing it to this old shirt of mine, and his old blanket that he used to love to sleep in. The blanket is a black fleece material that feels very much like his fur, perhaps that's why he likes it. But he is also suckling! He hasnt suckled since I got him, and he used to do it to my shirts and this blanket. I guess i'll allow him to keep going lol, he seems to be emjoying himself thoroughly (he's purring, least I think he is. But going back to the behavior after a seuizure isnt anything to worry about?

Posted 1 year ago by rio waye #

  22. So glad to hear he's doing well. As for caring for him after a seizure you'll really need to ask the vet about that. Most take a wait and see approach and only prescribe medicine if there is another seizure. Just be watchful like you are. This is a good resource regarding behavior pre/during and post seizure like the running in circles, acting confused. I wouldn't let him outside anytime soon.
Don't know if your kitty has epilepsy but this is a good resource.

  23. The vet and I are rather sure it wasn't epilectic, but more likely brought on by him eating something toxic (although not sure what as he was either in my sight, or in a carrier that day 99% of the time, maybe something on the floor. That article is rather helpful, thank you for the link! I guess he's still in the post-phase. It was a rather bad seizure, I don't think he would had made it if I didn't run him to the vet when I did. He went into another seizure at the vet, then they sedated him to prevent more. But he started his "pre" phase that day hours before hand, just thought the anesthesia was bothering him, then he's jerking around in his cage.:(

AWW he's sitting on my lap :) i miss this, and didnt think i'd see him do anything again. He's not meowing as much as he was, still probably a lil woozy on valium. Gave him a 1/4 of a pill yesterday morning, so who knows.

BTW every cat/kitten I've had before hand has died in this manner, or directly after, both times were a result of some serious trauma or something that causes a seizure as well. So I was pretty scared when this guy did it. I think he's meowing because he wants my attention, he'll stop when i let him curl up next to me, and continue the second i move to get up.

  24. I also just found out what made my cat seizure, I found a piece of chocolate (one of those complimentary ones from Olive Garden), that had a bite in it (including wrapper). I don't even eat chocolate, I hate it, now even more so! It must had slipped out of the bag with my takeout meal, because I threw the other one away before hand :|.

Anyone know if there are permanent effects from chocolate poisoning?

Posted 1 year ago by rio waye #

  25. Wow! That's scary! Good job finding out what the toxin was. I looked all over the web including vet books and such and can't find long term effects. They all focus on immediate effects.I think your vet would be the best person to answer your question.
Well, this source says Clinical signs may persist up to 72 hr in severe cases. So hopefully the worst part is over.

  26. Hi RW,How is little Fade doing?

Posted 1 year ago by Buttercup #

  27. Not as good :( He just had another seizure just now (although not nearly as bad, lasted only 5 seconds) and he seemed fine afterwards. Vet said it may be the start of a chronic condition :| He's resting again right now, that scared me so hard, I didn't have any more valium left, but a 1/4 piece, put it in his mouth, and held him firmly before the serious shaking part started, and it stopped, instantly, it was such an incredible feeling. The vet was kind of enough to let me purchase more medication incase it should happen again, and we still have not paid the original bill yet (gave us till 15th)! I fear one day I will be in class and won't be able to help him... Glad class is canceled tomorrow.

Seems he's at least in a better state, still recovering perhaps, only time will tell :|

  29. i wonder if cats who have toxoplasmosis can have seizures? Aside from the seizures, every other symptom you are describing sounds like toxo. The first vet i had stumpie at also tried to convince me stump had ingested some sort of toxin . . .

Posted 1 year ago by Skyron #

  30. Well I'm SURE he injested chocolate, I mean the circumstantial evidence clearly shows that (small bite out of chocolate bar found, he's still a baby, it's not gonna take much) I'm thinking he MAY have licked some residual that I missed. However, I noticed he's been going back into his seizures after he eats something, or even gets anything in his mouth (including the valium). He went into 3 "mini seizures" this morning, all of them I was instantly able to quell. I hate crating him in his carrier all day, but at least he's safe in there. The wet food I've been giving him is when I'll notice the mini right after, very different the the one last week. last week there were symptoms(growling, crying LOUDLY, etc), and then a VIOLENT reaction. This time, he starts trembling, and drooling, I instantly grab him, and hold him in my arms firmly, and within a few seconds, he stops.

As for toxoplasmosis....idk much about that, honestly I thought it was effects from the anestesia.

Kinda feel like I deserve this, and he's suffering because of my past actions (I used to be one of those dumb kids that would chase and hurt cats around the neighboorhood, yes I know, not cool, but this was 15+ years ago). Most times we'd never actually even catch one, but a few times...we did, won't go into details. Well my mom caught us one day, and made me take care of the cat we were bothering until he was better. That changed my opinion on cats there, as I bonded to the lil dude, then my mom let him go when he was better. Since then, every cat I have had has either died as a result of a seizure or ran off within 2 weeks of getting him. I feel like I owe this cat the best possible life I can give him, and that I am not living up to it.

Thank you for your thoughts and concerns, I'm gonna lie down now, try to calm myself down before I go into a seizure (or anxiety attack)!
