Bad Saturday - a warning

  1. On Saturday I bought a new scratch pad for Rotley and Ruggles, which included catnip. The scratch pad was manufactured by SmartyKat and was manufactured in China. I've used their stuff before with no problems, although the previous products were made in the USA.

However, the catnip, which was included in the scratch pad box and was to be applied to the scratch pad itself, was not good for Ruggles.

I put a couple of pinches of catnip on the pad, rubbed it in, and put the pad down on the ground for the cats.

About 30 minutes after the two cats were exposed to the catnip, Rotley was vomiting violently and Ruggles exhibited stroke-like symptoms which included severe dizziness, disorientation, panic, and paralysis on the left side of his body. A few minutes later, when Ruggles was able to get to his feet, he was leaning against the wall while walking, trying to keep from falling over.

I was in the kitchen by this time, frantically calling my vet's emergency phone number.

By the time my vet returned the call, both cats had almost completely returned to normal behavior. The vet indicated that it was because of the catnip.

My cats have been exposed to catnip from the ages of 6 months onward. They never reacted to catnip like this before.

Yesterday I went back to the store and was refunded my money, and I signed a product liability form.

Please be careful of the catnip you give your cats. The sight of a terrified Ruggles, trying to get to his feet and falling over, was horrible.

  4. How awful and scary! {{{{Rotley, Ruggles and Emma}}}}. I wish it were possible to buy things not made in China, there are so many problems with manufacturing there.

Poor kitties, and poor mama :(

  5. Oh my Emma that is scary, poor babies, I know they were scared too trying to figure out what was wrong.

I will make sure that I do not buy any catnip from the company or that comes from China.

  7. OMG!! How awful, and scary!!!! Glad they are doing fine!!!!

  8. Thanks very much. The vet said that Ruggles was reacting to the catnip as if it had been very potent and said that the symptoms were similar to profound drunkenness. This went way beyond the range of reactions to any catnip I had ever given those two.

Ruggles is now more clingy than ever (he is always affectionate, but never clingy). This really scared the little fellow.

  9. Wow, happy to hear they have recovered. I guess natural or organic catnip is the best way to go along with home grown. (I give my kits catmint...they don't get as cRAzY from it!!!)

  18. I'm so glad they are ok. I always get the same catnip, but this is a good warning to everyone. I try not to buy anything for my babies with made in China on it. ((Emma, Baby Rotley and Ruggles von Tuggles))

  19. I wonder how we can know where the catnip that we buy comes from? My girls love nip but this scares me.

Posted 1 year ago by WillowandWindismom #

  20. Well I always buy the same brand,I admit that I didn't look much at the label when I first bought it but the quality seems to be very good and potent. It seems to make my Bobbiecat(alpha) into sort of a mean drunk if she gets too much but they enjoy it and are safe.
It's WhiskerCity and made in the US
Here's the brand though I can't find the big bottle I usually get.

  21. The only certain source of catnip is that you grow from seed in your own flower pots or beds. Everything else, you have know idea what fertilizers and or pesticides have been used.

At least it is easy to grow...Unless like my mom, you have BLACK THUMB. She could kill Dandelions.

  22. Actually, be very careful with ANY kind of catnip. This company that manufactured the scratch pads is very reputable, and when we use anything like catnip, organic or not, it can be very potent stuff.

The cautionary here is not to avoid products made by this group. It's that we need to be careful with this stuff. Some catnip may be more powerful than we expect.

Just make sure that when you are giving your cats the wonderful catnip they love, use a very light hand and just a tiny pinch to check how much "octane" is within it!
