Toothache is back and blood pressure is way up

  1. After reading the post about the infection, I did some research and decided to take a double-dose of amoxicilin. I also added two garlic tablets to that because garlic is known to help the body fight of just about anything. Then I went back to bed. I was able to sleep for nearly 45 minutes before the pain woke me up the first time and then an hour the second time. The severe pain is now stopped by rinsing that side of my mouth with peroxide then Listerine. My jaw is no longer sore to the touch and I do feel a little better.

I am going to take one more double dose of amoxicilin this evening then go through another day with the normal dose. Hopefully, this will knock most of the infection out by the time I see the doctor on Friday so all she will have to do is see about adjusting my blood pressure medicine and fill out the form so the dentist will pull the tooth.

Thanks to everybody for the prayers, well wishes, suggestions and support!

  2. I'm sorry owlwatcher...I can relate to that kind of toothache. You'd think tho, that your doctor or dentist would work you in as an emergency knowing the kind of pain your having. Poor owlwatcher.

*Hugs & Prayers that your pain goes away

  3. Owlwatcher, I'm not a doctor. But I've been in the position of having an excruciating toothache and being unable to seek immediate dentist care. Please take anything I say with the first sentence foremost in mind.

If I were you, I'd definitely keep up on double doses of amoxicillin. It's usually a fairly mild antibiotic, and your infection is bad enough that double doses are probably warranted. You may also want to eat some yogurt daily, if you can; it will lessen the ravages of the antibiotics on your intestines. If at all humanly possible, get more antibiotics from your doctor on Friday, as well as the blood pressure medication. If you can't afford to purchase prescription amounts, tell your doctor that, and ask if they have any samples they can part with.

Clove oil and orajel will help for a while, as will the peroxide and Listerine rinses. They usually need to be reapplied after the rinses, unless you've got some sort of packing or cotton wadding in place.

Chances are good that you can safely take 1 1/2 to double doses of whatever painkiller that doesn't interfere with your blood pressure medication. If it only works for 4 hours, make sure you take it in the middle of the night; otherwise the throbbing pain will wake you up.

Keep a glass of ice water in the fridge, with a straw in it. Keep ice in the freezer. If you wake up in pain, and none of the above techniques have helped, sip ice water through the straw, keeping the straw as close to the inflamed area as possible. It will help keep the swelling down.

I wish you the very best of luck, dear, and I hope you're able to get the help you need soon.

  4. How are you doing, honey? I just said some prayers for you and I hope you got some sleep last night.

  5. Owlwatcher, are you feeling better? I sure hope so.

  6. I just wanted to let you guys know that I stopped in here late last night and again early this morning.

anncetera2 - your advice about the ice water really helped a lot last night. Funny thing - last thing I thought would help the pain was anything cold but it really did help.

Emma - I was feeling very discouraged when I stopped in here early this morning after emailing my geography instructor. At that point, I was waking up every 15 minutes or so to rinse my bad tooth with Listerine then ice water to calm the pain. After reading after reading your post then thinking about the other posts where people said they were praying for me, I went back to bed. Last thought on my mind as my head hit the pillow was, "With them praying for me, I can't lose right?" I then slept for 2 hours straight!! When I woke up, the swelling in my mouth had gone down and the pain had decreased dramatically. I then went back to sleep for another 1 1/2 hours and was woken up by my dog barking instead of a raging toothache. My tooth was hurting - the medicine I had taken during the night had worn off but I am not wailing and crying like a baby from the pain this morning. Now that the Tylenol and aspirin (no ibuprofen!! :) ) are taking effect, I am actually feeling pretty good.

Thank-you Emma and everybody else for the well wishes and the prayers!!

  7. YEA!!! So glad to hear you are feeling better. I continue to send positive and healing energies to you (and all others in need) each day. Hopefully with the pain relief, the BP will go down and that tooth can be pulled!

  8. Owlwatcher, so glad the healing power of the TDK group was able to break through your pain. Keep focusing on thoughts of the many people sending you good thoughts, acknowledge those warm thoughts and say like a mantra "With them praying for me, I can't lose right?". Hopefully that will get the high BP down and you can get the treatment you need. I too have high BP that most of the time is controlled my meds. (lisinopril hctz) I have found that when stress, fear or pain make it go up that I can counteract it with calming positive thoughts. Listening to accoustic music helps as well. I focus on trying to listen to one instrument at a time and hear the nuances of the instruments as they interact and that helps as well. (Surrounding you with healing white light.)

  9. Glad you're feeling better Owlwatcher, and that you've managed to get some sleep - hope your dentist manages to sort it all out properly for you tomorrow xx

  10. I am praying for you.

  11. Owlwatcher, I'm glad to hear you're doing somewhat better. Please keep on a regular schedule of antibiotics, Listerine, Tylenol, orajel, and ice water, if all of those elements seem to be helping somewhat.

Ice water helps reduce swelling. The infected area sounds like it's swollen, so icing it down helps with that.

I'm so sorry that you're going through this. Please promise me you'll see the doctor and dentist, for the care that you *need.* Your tooth absolutely, positively will not get better on its own, at this point; you need their intervention to help solve this problem.

  12. Looks like it's going to be a rough night. Toothache is back with a vengeance and I am having to rinse my mouth with listerine every 10-15 minutes to stop the pain. Nothing else is working right now - not even a mixture of tylenol, aspirin, and ibuprofen. Orajel helps a little but it only works for a minute or two before the pain comes back.

My doctor's appt. is tomorrow morning. I have to go see the doctor before I can see the dentist because of my blood pressure being so high last time I was at the dentist. The dentist won't work on my teeth unless the doctor fills out a form saying that it is okay for the dentist to work on my teeth.

What I am hoping is that the doctor will fill out the form and prescribe me some pain pills and stronger antibiotics. Then I am going down the hall to the dentists office to see if they have any openings so maybe I can get the tooth pulled tomorrow instead of having to wait till next week for an appointment.

  13. Hey, sweetie. Could you explain to the doctor that your abscessed tooth is keeping you awake and your blood pressure will continue to rise if you don't get enough sleep? This kind of pain is terrible to endure and there has to be some resolution.

And I will continue to pray for your healing!

    Much best,
    Emma

  14. I pray that works out for you, owlcatcher, and that tomorrow night the relief will let you get a decent night's sleep. A body just can't keep running like that. Lots of calming thoughts and kitty love to keep your BP down coming your way.

  15. owlwatcher,
I hurt just listening to your descriptions.
I am with you, and sending positive, healing energy your way.
Hoping morning comes with speed, and you can finally see an end to all this.
Love, hugs and purrs, my friend.

  16. Sounds like the advice from Anncetera is helping. Still thinking positive thoughts and prayers for you. Gentle hugs and purrs.

  17. Owlwatcher, I agree with Emma. Please be sure to tell the doctor just how bad the pain is (on a scale of 1 to 10, with 0 being no pain, 5 being moderate pain, and 10 being in so much pain that you're willing to pull the tooth yourself with a pair of pliers.)

That will likely help persuade the doctor of the need for stronger/more antibiotics, as well as some sort of pain medication that will make a bigger dent than the OTC stuff will give you.

I'm not surprised that some people would self-medicate themselves with alcohol, almost to the point of unconsciousness, due to something like a toothache. The pain is difficult to describe, for someone who hasn't experienced it.

    Good luck!

  18. "Please be sure to tell the doctor just how bad the pain is (on a scale of 1 to 10, with 0 being no pain, 5 being moderate pain, and 10 being in so much pain that you're willing to pull the tooth yourself with a pair of pliers.)"

How about willing to pull the tooth with a pair of rusty tweezers?

I just got back from the doctors. She gave me a second prescription for my blood pressure and one for pain. I have to go back on Monday and, if my blood pressure is low enough, she will fill out the paper so the dentist can pull the tooth. I am still waiting to go pick up the new pain medicine so I am now being shown a whole new level of pain! One half hour to go until I can go get the medicine.. one half hour -- meanwhile, my roommate is badgering me about what I need to say to the dentist and how this can't continue etc... If he only realized how much worse he is making things. I think my blood pressure is going up just listening to him worry about me *sighs*

  19. Owlwatcher, you, as always, have my best thoughts. I pray that your BP goes down and that you can get your tooth pulled. Love Terri

  20. Hopefully you don't have plans for the weekend so you can take your pain meds and concentrate on getting the BP down. Hopefully the pain meds should accomplish more than 1/2 of that battle. One other thing to do. If you are at the grocery or pharmacy and they have one of those free BP monitors. Check and log the results. If you can document to your doc that part of the reason it is high is the fact that you are in a doctor's office, that might also help to convince him that you have "White Coat Syndrome" i.e. your BP is up just because you are stressed from going to see him, and he might sign the papers even if your BP is a little high. Tell the roommate that he can help you more my rubbing your neck and the base of your skull and doing reflexology on your feet than by flapping his gums! I'll send you lots of pain-free and low BP thoughts over the weekend.

  21. Tell him to shut up and hug you.
I really hope the new pain killers are good and the dentist can do his job on Monday. Think about it - less than 3 days and the pain will be history. :)

Posted 4 years ago by miu #

  22. You were in my thoughts coming to work tonight, owlwatcher.
Hopefully the pain meds will do the job and allow healing for the tooth.
Will send you pos energy and healing thoughts all weekend, and I hope that by the time I get to work on Monday that you will be on your way to recovery.
    Hugs and purrs.

  25. i wish i could give you some lorcet from my wisdom teeth surgery that i never used. i know it's awful to have a toothache. i had horrible pain in my tooth after i had my wisdom's pulled. funny that the tooth/gum hurt by my other tooth but two weeks it was a pain in my neck (mouth lol) i'm praying for you to feel better and get that taken care of! just make sure you follow through with your antibiotic or else it will get resistant, but i'm sure you know that! :) i just read a sec ago that you do feel a bit better, i'll still pray though!! :)

  26. Owlwatcher, hope that by now you have your pain medicine and it is helping you get some rest. But if the pain starts up before it is time for your next dose,
say to yourself "Yes, this hurts alot, but it is not killing me at this time." Then concentrate on your breathing: take a deep breath in and imagine EXHALING
the pain. Keep repeating this, and if you can, visualize the pain leaving your
    body.

  27. The pain medicine isn't doing anything for me. I just asked my roommate to go get me some ibuprofen because the pain is now constant and feels 10 times worse. If only that doctor had just filled out the form then maybe I could have gotten a dentist appt. this afternoon and been finished with this mess.

As it is I have been crying like a baby all afternoon. I just hope the ibuprofen/tylenol mix does something for this pain. If it doesn't I think I'll reach in with pliers and pull the stupid tooth myself. It couldn't hurt much worse than it is hurting right now

  28. Owlwatcher--we are all sending you positive thoughts and healing light. You have done everything in your power to get the pain dealt with. Sometimes I don't think doctors medicate pain properly. If you are at your wits end, please consider going to an urgent care facility or emergency room. You shouldn't have to wait this long to get some relief. I know money is a problem without health insurance, but that can be sorted out later. (I know, easy for me to say...but I don't see other options.)

  29. Just wanted to let everybody know the pain medicine works after all. Just a few minutes after my last post, my roommate brought me back some ibuprofen and I took some of that with tylenol. Then, just a few moments after I had taken the ibuprofen, it was as if somebody had flipped a switch. There is still some pain but I am way to 'out there' to really feel it. Once the ibuprofen and tylenol hit me, I should be pain free for quite some time. :)

  30. So glad to hear that you have gotten some relief at last! Sleep well.
