  1. hey there all ... i'm new here. :)

i will be getting married in august. "the boys" as my cats are collectively called, will be moving with me into my fiances house after the wedding. he adores them (as he should!) ... but has the most sensative nose on earth! i keep my boys' box very clean, but he's concerned about the smell. we're looking at automatic box options and all those things on the internet that "swear" to illiminate odor...any of you cat lovers have any advice that actually is from experience? i'd really appreciate it!

  2. Welcome! Try Arm & Hammer unscented clumping litter. Keep the box in an out of the way place.. and consider getting a second box. :)

  5. Welcome g8erchick. Yep.. more than one box, out of the way, I would think would do the trick. Can he smell the litter box in your house now?

  6. Have at least 1 cat litter box per cat. You can put it in an out-of-the-way place, but not anywhere damp, drafty, or cold. (Clay litter is floor temperature.)

If you use a clumping litter, change all the litter in the box every month, or every other month. And scoop daily.

Wash out the litter pans every couple of months, and keep disinfecting handi-wipes if the boys don't aim quite right.

Consider large litter boxes with hoods. I would not get one with a flap or door, however, unless you are RELIGIOUS about daily scooping. That means if you go out of town for the weekend, a friend comes by to do the daily scooping. I don't like the flaps or doors, because your litterbox shouldn't stink! And it's too easy to trap serious ammonia fumes in hooded litter boxes with flaps or doors.

Make sure you're feeding the boys good food that they seem to digest well.

Last, but not least... if your boyfriend absolutely cannot stand litterboxes, spend the time and money to set up a bathroom where the cats can use the toilet. Seriously. You could save a lot of time, money, and arguments that way, provided you're willing to be patient and understanding while the cats learn to use the facilities.

I think cats prefer to use the toilet, especially if they've ever had to use a stinky litterbox. Now, if you can train them to flush, you've got it made!!

  7. Seriously, if you're moving in together in August or later, you have tons of time to train your cats to use the toilet. Get his agreement on designating a toilet for the cats to use, leaving the lid up on the toilet seat, leaving the toilet seat down (broader perch for kitties to use) and to leaving/propping the door open whenever the bathroom's not in (brief) use by people. (The alternative is to install a cat flap on the door.)

Again, keep disinfecting handi-wipes handy for those rare occasions where the cat might barely dribble onto the edge of the toilet seat, and I think you've got it made!

One important note. Keep in mind that for medical diagnosis, urine or fecal characteristics are needed. If your cat suddenly stops peeing due to something like a urinary tract infection, you probably wouldn't know about it until the illness has advanced. You would need to pay extra attention to any noise your cat might make while toileting; it could be a sign of pain. Discuss with your vet any potential drawbacks, so you can be more alert to early signs of UTI or intestinal/gut problems.

If you can get your cats to do this, you've got a great party trick!!

  9. g9erchick (possibly a UF fan??). Take a look at this website, I have a multiple cat household I purchased the litterworks self-sleaning system & I love it. Now neither my husband or my son fuss about litter box odors.

  10. No advice, but welcome to TDK g8erchick!

  11. Hi, you have gotten som really good advice. I have 7 kitties (and I'm a very fussy clean person)...if you cannot train your kitties to use the toilet (that would be awesome!), I have had the most success with Scoop Away plus crystals litter (there is aslo regular Scoop away - no good- it has to be the one with crystals). The other thing that I have found most helpful are the containers of "natural magic" odor absorbing gel. In my area I get them at Home Depot for the best price ( approx $4). They last about 2 months and come in different scent; supposedly the best for pet odos is the orange scent, but I have used them all with good results,
Good luck and congratulations on your upcoming wedding.

  12. G8terChik, We installed a catflap in the door between the house and the garage and then screened off the back section of the garage and have our catboxes down there. That way they have privacy and space and the cat boxes are closer to the garbage cans at scooping time. We screened off the back section and installed a door on a spring hinge so that there would never be any danger of them getting out or under cars. On my way out the door in the AM to the car it is a quick stop for a scoop and on my way. I use freshstep litter with the odor lock. It is a highly scented litter so I would only use it in a area with great ventillation. Also each cat her her/his own box.

  13. Hmmmmmmmm, Anncetera, does the kitty have to be especially ehm, bright, to learn how to use the toilet? This may be something to teach The Bobster, but I'm afraid he's not the smartest kitty in the world.....(sorry, Bobby, but all the TDK'ers just saw the video clip of you licking Visk's off of Mama's foot!)

  14. i'm so glad to have found ... "my people" ... i don't know what i would do without my three babies!i must admit that the idea of them being about to use the toilet would be fantastic ... and they're bright little tykes - but you can't teach an old dog new tricks - so what about 2 yr old cats? :)

  15. I haven't attempted to train my two kits, but I believe MeezerMama has. Watch for her to post and she can tell you how she did it. I'm glad you found us too. Keep coming back. I'm always learning new things. :-)

Here is a fairly inexpensive toilet training kit:

  16. I think Bob is smart enough to give it a try, GreatDane. Don't skimp on the system; you want one sturdy enough to support the cat, while providing a gradual move to a larger & larger hole for waste targeting.
