LOL,
Well this past Friday Morning upon looking outside of my back yard to greet my German Shepherd,I observed a Black baby kitten curled up on the outside door mate and my German Shepherd just laying there looking at him. We've been giving him food and water and he eats. The funny thing is that he appeard out of no where and moreover is how come he was'nt affraid of my 110 Lbs 10 Years Old German shepherd?? I appears to be 6 weeks old and as gained some weight these past few days. As of today he will not allow us to pick him up? If you approach him he back up or hide. However he plays with my Dogs. Feeding time he'll eat his food once you back away from his bowl. Any suggestions is apprecaited!

Hi Will and welcome to the world of kittens! I must say I am not an expert with kittens but I know many here are. Please check back often as others are far more educated when it comes to raising wee ones!

You have a feral kitten that will take time to warm up, but if you are patient it is worth it!! Welcome to TDK and know that you should get more advice the next few days, so keep checking in.
Your dog likes the kitten--so the kitten has a very good friend and guardian!

The kitten seems to know that your GS likes him/her and feels safe enough to be out there near you dog. If its only been since Friday you are very lucky that the baby stays as close as it is already, give it time.

Try sitting outside and talking to the kitty while he eats. Don't reach for him, just talk (read a magazine out loud, discuss your day, etc) just do anything to get him use to your presence and your voice.
When he is a little less skittish, maybe all three of you can sit together with dog in between you. Also, offer him special treats (unflavoured yoghurt is good) by just putting a little on your finger and holding it out to him.
As to how he got there, probably some piece-of-scum person dropped him off.
As long as he appears to be relatively healthy, let him get use to you slowly. Fortunately, you don't have to worry about freezing weather, so he can have the time to acclimate to you. If he starts to look or act ill, you'll have to trap him and take him to the vet, but for now you can just let him go at his own speed.
You might want to get a cat carrier, take the door off, line it will a blanket and a shirt you've worn but not washed and leave it close to his food. With luck, he'll get use to your smell and to the carrier at the same time.
If you are going to make him an indoor kitty, you might also put a small litter box out there (a little bit away from the food and bed}. Use unscented non-clumping litter, maybe adding some dirt from around your yard. If he uses it, you are well on your way to a potty-trained baby. And, you'll have access to poop samples if the vet wants them.
Good luck and keep us posted. And see if you can take some pictures - we luv pictures.

Thank You!!
yepper "Luke" our GSD is very noble! This little Kitten even went inside Luke's Bowl and ate his Dog Food. Luke just stood there looking at him!! Wish I had a camera!! This Little Guy was inside the Bowl. He is black all over his facial and body but has white paws and white on his belly. I have'nt been able to check his sex due to he or she back's away when i attempt to go near him?? So for now he's a quest and he love's to play with my Dogs. -
Even if you could get close enough to him/her to check out those parts, it's very difficult to figure out the sex of small kittens. If you plan to name him/her now, make sure it's a nice genetic name. Nothing sounds funnier than calling a 20lb tomcat 'Doll Baby' or 'Suzanne Elizabeth'.

CBM, you are too funny, but give the best advice! I agree, Will, and wish you much success with your new little one and the playmate for your german shepard. Your dog is wonderful to just be sitting back and watching. Sounds like a match made in heaven, given time. Please keep us posted. Love to you and yours. Mama Lynn

Good Morning All!
Well as of yesterday morning I managed to convince my new arrival who I named Shadow to come into the house. It was a week from yesterday that he showed up in my back yard. I bathed him and allowed him to hang out with me in my office but he is sill jittery and trembles when i hold him. I cannot determine the sex yet and his paws are white with some still baby pink showing through the white. He is still a baby!! I kept him indoors over night since the temperture dropped to the low 50's. When I let him out he is still reluctant to come back in but will only stand by the doorway. So i'm hoping that in time he will feel secure with being indoors with my other pets. Thank you all for your input! -
Up-Date!!
Shadow is a Female and she's come around!! She now comes inside the house, lets me carry her, plays inside with my dogs and She is not fearful as She was in the beginning. She;s gained some weight and eats. Going to take her to the vet hopefully by next week. Thank U all for your advise!! -

Greetings,
Thank You all for your advise and comments!!The've came handy because as of last week Shadow has taken to me and now loves to come indoors to eat her kibbles and sit on my lap. When She first showed up in my back yard as a 3 week old kitten She was fearful and would run away everytime i approached her. So I fed her and gave her water and she would spend the day playing with my GSD. So slowly throughout these past few weeks i continually coarsed her to come inside at which time I would pet her and then feed her afterwards allowing her to go back outside. Now, She loves to be with me and rubs her body on my hand and legs. My only problem is trying to teach her to use the litterbox? When I keep her indoors during the cold days she poops away from her litterbox. Some Friends advised me to put her poop in her litterbox? Well anyways Shadow has bonded with me and it has been almost 1 month of patience and consistancy. Will try to post a picture!! -
Awwww, well done, Will, you have a friend for life now. Yes, if she is used to pooping outside, you can put a little bit of her poop in the litter box, as she probably doesn't know what it's for and that will tell her. You can also try putting dirt in her litter box instead of litter as she will be used to using earth. And finally there is a very good product called Cat Attract/Kitten Attract which really seems to work for most TDKers here, you sprinkle it over her litter box (you don't have to fill the whole litter box with it as it's a bit pricey) and she will rush to go there! Also click on the pink tag "litter box" for heaps of previous threads advising on this subject. We would love to see her, you can make her a catster page of her own!

Well done, Will, it looks like you and little Shadow are becoming a family. I agree with JCAT on the little box problem. Alot of patience and love, will make that happen. I seem to think you have both. Congrats on your new addition and how is your german sheperd doing with her in the house? I wish you both well and look forward to seeing you soon. Love, Mama Lynn and by the way, thank you for taking care of another abandoned little one. The angels will shine on you for that. God bless you, Mama Lynn

Thanks!!
The funny thing is that i never really liked the black in color cats. when i was a child i was attacted by a black cat and from that time on I did'nt like them. so yea, when she showed up and I saw that she was a black kitten I said,"Gee Whiz, Not a Black one",LOL!! well she's not completely black. She has a white belly, white paws, and the bottom part of her jaws are white. this evening upon arriving home from work she jumped on the outside of my kitchen window sill and was meowing! I opened the window and she came right to me rubbing on my arms. Pic's soon to come. thanks 4 the info Jact and Lynn! -
Will, I've found the very best way to teach a former outdoors-only kitten to use the litter box is to fill the box with dirt from outside. That's what they're used to doing their business in. Show her the litter box with the dirt and she'll hopefully get the idea. Once she's gotten used to using the box, gradually start mixing real litter in.

How are things, Will? Is Shadow doing better and most of all, are you? Keep us posted.
