His condition has not improved from last week--running fevers over 100 degrees F, sometimes over 102; unable to eat--massive diarrhea whenever he tried. The catheter was removed yesterday morning and a cystoscopy done; normal. Yesterday afternoon I took him to the GP. His temperature was 102.3 F, he'd lost 16 more pounds (total loss of 50 pounds over the past several months), and was dehydrated. The GP said it was time to find out what was going on and arranged for his admission to the hospital under the care of one of their hospitalists.
The hospital staff had to put the catheter back in during the night, as he began retaining urine again. The urologist and GI specialist are sure this problem is caused by the med the GI spec gave Mr. Leeny for IBS. He took his last dose of it yesterday morning, before the urologist told us to stop the medicine, and it's going to take a while for it to get out of his system. The hospitalist has asked the GI spec for consultation, and he will be seeing Mr. Leeny today. Meanwhile, they're giving him new medications and insisting that he eat. Breakfast went well.
I called Quinn on my cell from the GP's office, got his voice mail, left a brief message, didn't expect to hear anything, and planned to call the church this morning. Around 9:30 last night, as we were waiting for them to hook up Mr. Leeny's IV, Quinn arrived to see him. He talked with him for a while and prayed with us. He told Mr. L. to be a good patient and not to pinch the nurses. When he was leaving, he mentioned that supper was waiting for him at home. 9:30 at night, and he hadn't even eaten yet, and he stopped by to see Mr. Leeny. I was very happy. He may be a keeper after all.
