More diarrhea this morning (twice), but at least he made it to the bathroom, so now they have the stool samples they need. Still running fevers, catheter still in. No answers yet.

Mr. Leeny is in the hospital
(57 posts)-
This is according to Mr. Leeny, who says himself that he may not be reporting it correctly:
The hospitalist says Mr. Leeny has a virus (I don't know what led him to that conclusion) and, to control the diarrhea, wants to put him temporarily back on the IBS medicine that shut down his bladder. Although discharge has not been mentioned, Mr. Leeny has the impression that they intend to send him home with the catheter in him, as it was for a week before his admission. So here we are, back in the same place we were before he went into the hospital: (1) we assume Mr. L. has a virus; (2) the IBS med shut down his bladder; and (3) he has a catheter. Will the IBS med control the diarrhea? Who knows? It didn't control it at home during the week before the admission, when anything but sports drinks and ginger ale set off massive diarrhea.
When I was talking to Quinn yesterday, he said he would visit Mr. Leeny yesterday afternoon. He didn't, and we haven't heard a thing from him since that conversation. If something came up and he was unable to visit Mr. L., he could have at least picked up the phone. In fact, he could pick up the phone to him, or to me, any time. It's almost impossible to get in touch with him, so if he doesn't initiate the contact, you don't talk to him. I'm getting sick of being jerked around like this.

I was wondering how Mr Leeny was. I wasn't on yesterday. I hope he is feeling better and I will add him to my prayer list.
I was wondering Who is Quinn? How are you doing Leeny?Posted 1 year ago by jeanjellibean20 #

I do not believe that Quinn is intentionally trying to jerk you around. You were singing his praise when he skipped dinner at 9:30 at night to be with you two at the hospital. Quinn should have been there or called, that would be the respectful thing to do, but there could have been another emergency as well within the church. Quinn has been to see you, and he has called you to pray with you. He may have his faults, as we all do, but it appears he is trying to minister to you and Mr. Leeny. Make another appointment with him and air your grievance--it may help him to be a better minister not only to you and Mr. Leeny, but to the entire congregation.

SM, the whole thing with Quinn was a misunderstanding. On Thursday, when he said he would go see Mr. Leeny, he got tied up and saw he was not going to be able to make it. He asked a woman from our church to go see Mr. L., take Mr. L. his regards, and explain why he couldn't be there. When she arrived, however, Mr. L. was out of his room having tests and procedures done. Mr. Leeny told me that he was told that "some woman from our church" had stopped by, but that was all. Also, there was a card left in his room from the hospital chaplain service, and it had been signed by a woman. Because Mr. L. sometimes gets confused, I didn't know if the woman really was from our church or from the chaplain's service. Mr. L. called Quinn's cell phone twice, expressing his disappointment and asking for a visit: he got the voice mail and no response.
All this was cleared up on Saturday afternoon when Quinn came by to visit Mr. L. He told us who he had sent (she's someone we know well) and the details of her mission, and he also told us that sometimes his voice mail service does not deliver his messages for as long as a couple of days (I know that happens because it's happened to me). He checked his phone right there in the room, and there were no messages showing. So, we didn't get Quinn's message and he didn't get ours.
I'll be leaving within the hour to bring Mr. Leeny home. The catheter is out, he's urinating well on his own, and he's eating without massive diarrhea. His stools are still somewhat loose, but he's going to be on a new medicine for that. This stuff doesn't even get absorbed out of the GI tract, so it won't mess up anything else going on with him.

Prayers for continued healing for Mr L and strength to you in nursing him through this.

I'm glad to hear that Mr. Leeny is finally home. I know he will feel more comfortable there and that will help him recuperate. You are both in my prayers.

The kitties now have both of their hoomins at home, and Mr. Leeny will be able to have a kitty on his bed, something for which he was longing the whole time he was in the hospital.
Does anyone know what condition requires people to take shots of vitamin B12? Mr. Leeny was getting them in the hospital, and has to continue getting them at the GP's office. He has to have them daily for 7 days (his cousin is taking him today), then weekly for a certain number of weeks that I don't remember right now, then monthly "indefinitely". They've also rearranged his medications and their scheduling; I'm going to have to update his medication list.

Leeny, I haven't had a reliable computer in over a week, so I am just now seeing this. Glad Mr. L is home. B12 may be to boost his immune system. I have had to get them at times for that reason. Prayers up for you both!

B12 helps carry oxygen on red blood cells. Usually given with iron-deficieny anemia. he may have lost blood during this whole episode (did he get any transfusions?). There may be another reason but that is the most common. I get two shots a week and sometimes will do several in a row if I'm feeling more tired than usual.
Continued prayers for a speedy recovery!

He didn't get any transfusions, Lainey, and he didn't lose any blood to my knowledge. He may very well be anemic, though. His diet has never been great, but during this virus (and it was a virus that caused the severe problem; the attending hospitalist told me how he arrived at that conclusion) he was living on sports drinks and ginger ale because eating any solid food gave him massive diarrhea. The diarrhea itself probably upset a lot of things. I wonder if I should start buying vitamins with iron in them? The fifty-plus types generally don't have much iron.

I have PA and will need B12 shots for my lifetime. That being said. B12 is limited in sources and those mostly Red Meat or Liver. Lima Beans are listed as a source. Any diet lacking these sources can lead to B12 deficiency. Shots then build the reserves up quickly. B complex vitamins or even B12 specific supplements can keep the levels in the normal range for anyone not having absorption issues which result in PA.
B12 is required for Red Cell generation as is Iron and Folic Acid.
B12 is also needed for healthy myelin sheaths. A deficiency leads to deterioration of these sheaths causing numbness and other neural problems. The body tries very hard to protect itself so it steals from the peripheral nerves and lowers the hemoglobin first but given enough time it can affect more critical systems.
I still have balance issues from the level of deterioration before diagnosis I encountered.

I wouldn't take the vitamins with iron without talking to a doctor first. it is my understanding that for men it is not a good idea due to heart issues and such. That being said, Ailuromaniac is right, food sources should be the first stop (outside the B12 shots). Deep green leafy veggies are excellent sources of iron as are red meats. of course, his tummy is still in a fragile state. I would try to get as much info from the doctor as possible as to why he needs the B12 and if iron supplementation is required. I don't have PA but I am anemic due to the gastric bypass. It's a pain in the other end!
Hope this helps!

Thanks for the input, Ailuro and Lainey. His diet certainly hasn't included any of the foods you mentioned, and the diarrhea, both acute from the virus and chronic from the IBS, could lead to absorption problems. I will hold off on the iron until I can talk to the doctor.

I am glad to read that Mr. Leeny is home. I bet the kitties are happy.

Glad Mr Leeny is home... with chronic (and acute) diarrhea, you also need to think about electrolyte balance... He needs sourses of potassium, and one of the best could also help sooth the bowel -- bananas... rice is also good, and these days is often fortified with some of the nutrients Mr Leeny may need... Kits on the lap is always a good thing! Wishing only the best for you both!
