  1. Linda, So sorry things are bad. I have been on that neverending treeadmill of too much work and never time for a break too. One thing that helped me, was switching departments temporarily. I had a co-worker taking extended medical leave and they let me move into her position for the 4 weeks she was going to be off. It was still a lot of work, but having a different job provided the mental stimuation I needed and got me of the same treadmill I had been on for so long. Is your company big enough to make a departmental shift, even temporarily?

During the bad times, I definitely tried to leave the office during lunch. Even if I only took a 15 minute break and went outside, it helped. I always had a book to read on and if I could take a full hour, I often would go to a local park, read and eat my sandwich or take a walk.

Emailing friends, checking fb or TDK in a spare moment is also a nice mini break to remind you that your job is not your life. It is your means of having your life.
    Hope things get better.

  2. I try to focus on the task at hand and not feel overwhelmed by what's waiting behind that...although at times, I give in to the feeling of being overwhelmed. That's when I hug my babies and realize that I work so I can spend money and time on my kitties, and for the delayed gratification of retirement.... and I think about those who really really want to work, but can't find it.

  3. Linda, I'm going to take your question very seriously....

First, stop and think about how badly you need your job. Are you a two income family? Would you be able to make it if you lost your job? Or is it your sole means of support? That tends to help put things in perspective.

Then think about how easy/hard it would be to snag another job if you lost this one. That insight also helps people put their job in the appropriate light.

Deep breathing, sometimes called "belly breathing" is the very best coping strategy for stress, no matter what that source of stress is. You can do it anywhere, any time. Breathe in through your nose, with your mouth closed. Use your belly muscles to pull the air in. It takes some practice. You should actually see your belly expand, not your chest. Your body is physiologically incapable of being tense while you are breathing in this manner.

I suggest you limit email and Facebook at work. Granted they're a great way to get through a long day. Too many people have found out the hard way: that's a great way to lose your job, should your employer ever need to do a RIF and start looking for excuses to let go of employees who have been competent in all other respects. Read info online that will make you better at your job. Do research you can share with your boring co-workers. That way you can surf and still earn brownie points.

These are just a few ideas. I have more. I worked in a cubicle for many, many years. I hear your pain. If you want to hear more, let me know. Bless you, littermate, I have been in your shoes.

  4. I am sorry for anyone who's job has become an exercise in frustration. I've had jobs that I feel tense driving to and frustrated and angry when I drive home. I've also been a cashier during the Christmas shopping season and you wouldn't believe what that can be like. I used to keep pictures of sleeping cats with smiling faces in my register area so that when someone was treating me like a stupid servant girl and being rude and condescending, I would look down at the purring sleeping kitty that only I could see. I could feel the smile on my lips and I think it confused the people who were being rude. I like to think of it as covert happiness! I hope your workload lightens up Linda.

  5. I think any job can become a source of frustration. I basically love my job, that is the job I was hired to do 19 years ago, but between the expansion of work loads and budget cuts, there's a lot more involved now. Some of that I really hate. I used to look forward to retirement, but then the city has cut our benefits so much, I have calculated that health insurance for myself and my husband will cost more than the mortgage! The sorry truth is that I will never be able to retire. I cope by 1) playing the lottery, and 2) think what kind of job I can do when I am eligible for retirement from this one and hope it's one I will enjoy. I also spend time with my kitties to de-stress. Good luck to you.

  6. I wish I could help, Linda. The others have offered some very good tips. One other thing I do when I need a little break is to go to icanhascheezburger. I love the cute kitties and I always get a good laugh!

  7. How I got through 2.5 years of the job/boss from h*ll...

Exercise with a friend - laughter and cardio are great stress relievers.
Constant regular job searching - it can be frustrating but it keeps you focused when you need a job.
Running out of the building (ok brisk walk) did happen several times - several different people "had to step away" from the boss from h*ll.
    B*tch/commiserate with friends.
    Deep breaths.

  8. Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the sympathy and the advice and the suggestions! It's a small company and I try not to give away too much info (even here) in case someone goes looking at my computer usage. I've been here alot of years and I am thankful I have a job in these times...usually I can just suck it up, but yesterday was particularly bad. Thanks again...you guys are great!
