  2. Vicki, you have addressed a topic that has been of such great puzzlement to me for years. It's as if so many african americans take pleasure in being thought of as "victims". And "spokespersons" continue to fan the flames of victimhood, and "musical personalities" proclaim the virtues of remaining "victims". I keep wanting to say, "but why?" Me, I'm a hodgepodge of ethnic groups, roughly called caucasian for the most part (with a bit of Native american thrown in for good measure). Most of my ancestors were serfs for crying out loud! One of my best friends, (we met at summer school) was a blacker than black (as she liked to style herself) woman from New Orleans. About the only thing we had in common was we were both HS biology teachers, yet we hit it off and considered ourselves soul sisters, despite completely different backgrounds. I miss her very much, she died two years ago from complications of diabetes. She expressed much of what you said in your blog, and despaired of things getting better, and only saw the "victim syndrome" getting worse. Of course Katrina didn't help. Sorry for blathering on, but your blog reminded me so much of her, I was pulled back into many of our heart to heart discussions. Thanks for reminding me!

  3. I am so sorry to hear that your friend was taken from this world by diabetes. On my other blog I address the issue of high fructose corn syrup, which is probably the most evil thing mankind/womankind ever invented (next to nuclear and atomic weapons and firearms). So many diabetics may have gotten diabetes and/or died from diabetes due to HFCS, which is cheaper to use to sweeten processed foods than sugar or honey but which wreaks havoc on the body because it cannot process HFCS as readily as sugar, honey, or natural fructose. I'll address that further on my other blog, http://www.copperdots.wordpress.com.
As for your friend who is now an angel, you two were simply sisters from other mothers. Sometimes it is easier to be a victim than it is to acknowledge that you can change and become healthy and whole.

  4. Wow Vicki, well said and I agree completely about the high fructose corn syrup. It's in everything! I try my best to buy and eat products that aren't full of "crap" fake foods.I buy a lot of organic food and read a lot of labels but this food IS more expensive. Those folks who don't have the luxury of being able to eat these foods suffer. I'm aghast at how big the kids are nowadays. When I was growing up,it was the rare kid that was 1/2 as big as these kids and now the thin ones are a rarity and I don't think it's a lack of self control. It's all the junk in the food.I mean when I read that there is sillica sand and antifreeze among other things in fast food it pretty much tipped me off to stop eating it.I hope we can do something soon to reverse this trend or our kids will be the first generation to live a shorter life than their parents.

  5. Vicki, you are such an eloquent writer, vivid and direct and with a real flair for just the right word. You really should have a newspaper column or something!

Seriously, I'm not one to go into the conspiracy theories much, but sometimes you wonder just _who_ started the message that so many Black and Hispanic people have bought into, that success is selling out and "acting white," and if it was a deliberate message that somebody concocted JUST to foster that self-destructive attitude.

Look at the messages that women have swallowed for so long, that it's not feminine to succeed or have a good head for math or logic or to be involved in politics. It's the women who were often the most vicious in enforcing that message and pounding on dissenters.

It takes a lot of effort to oppress and push down a group as an outsider. Why bother when you can make them do it themselves? The victim mentality is the perfect tool, whether for minorities or women or the chronically ill or anybody else who was dealt the low cards instead of the high cards in the deck.

  7. Vicki, the more I read your blog the greater my respect is for you. You take on some tough issues and meet them head on. If more individuals had the guts to be themselves, I believe our world would benefit greatly. Isn't it wonderful that here on TDK we are all they same!

  8. Amen Vicki. Thank you for expressing all of that.

  9. Vicki dear, I posted on a comment on your blog, and I will say it here too. First off, I think you are incredibly brave and wonderful for standing up for yourself. We live in world of such falseness, and those who are not afraid to stand up for who they are, honestly, without being false like others deserve to be commended. You are a role model dear. I have bookmarked your blog because you have a lot of improtant stuff to say, and I learn much from you.

It's sad how 'colour'/race/etc. is used....In india, if your children are dark, it's like a mark of shame. Many indians are marry white girls who take them because they feel they will have an easy ticket to wealth and attention. It's a damn shame how we as society have allowed ourselves to give into some of the stereotypes we have created, and how we have allowed ourselves as society to become so weak, and not stand up for who we need to be. And sadly those of us who do stand up for who we are, who we should be and who we need to be, and those of us who oppose those false people and those false things get looked upon with a negative, sometimes abusive eye for it. Well, don't give up. And Vicki, I don't care what colour you are, you are a human being, you are a great person, and you are true to urself and others, and as far as I care, that's what counts. Rock on!

  11. I was feeling overwhelmed today because of the amount of stupid people i know who had seemed to reform themselves temporarily - had been just that - temporary and are now back to their old games. Reading your blog has given me back the courage the fight this crap again. Thanks so much!

  12. Vicki, I am 47 years old. I too have light skin and freckles and though I am HELLA mixed, I am for all intents and purposes Black. But because the music I listen to, the way I speak, the men I date, etc. I will never ever be Black enough for some people and you know what? I'm ok with that.

  17. We mongrels are the healthiest and live longest. Mongrels are also more intelligent and friendlier than the highly strung purebreds. Long live moggies and mongrels!

  19. Hey,I'm a moggie too! I've always referred to myself as a "Northern European Mutt" being French,Finnish,Irish,German and English.(Wonder-Bread!:D) Vicki, I've heard that HFCS was developed by Japanese scientists in the early '70s,and was immediately snatched upon as an incredibly inexpensive substitute for cane-sugar,quickly replacing it in soft-drinks(I'm old enough to remember when sodas HAD cane-sugar sweetener.)Well,it wasn't too long after that when you found high fructose corn syrup in EVERYTHING to this day.Just examine the ingredient lists of all the products on the shelves! Something like 75% of all shelf-products have it as their #2 or 3 ingredient. It's been called "The Dirty Little Open Secret" of the American diet of commercial foodstuffs. Ok....I'll step off the soapbox again. Besides, you're doing such an awesome job with your blog.Keep up the expose'! Peace.
