The girls and I were over a friends' house today making cookies and when we were in the car to leave, my car started acting funny, and going backwards by itself even in park. Then when I placed the car from drive to park, the gear shift shook horribly and I smelt something burning. I put the emergency brake on(we were still in my friend's driveway) and got out...huge puddle of transmission fluid was under the car and pieces of something was there too. Got it towed, thanks AAA and now it's at a repair shop getting assessed...we don't know what is wrong, if it's under warranty or if it can be fixed. Waiting for that phone call. Wayne is calling Hyundai as well. It might be cheaper to get a new car but we had just paid that one off and only has 50,000 miles on it for a 2003.
We do not have the money for this...who does, but please pray it won't be too bad and somehow I can get my car back...

Oh CM that had to be very scary! I am thankful you were not in an accident. Maybe this can be repaired without too much trouble. I know cars are so expensive to fix, but my prayer is this in something simple that can be fixed so the car is returned to you. The timing sucks munkey toes--but there is never really a good time as you said.

Ack - how scary CM! Might be the flywheel - don't know how expensive that is but I think it's cheaper than a new tranny. Fingers, toes & paws crossed for you.

Wayne called Hyundai and there is a recall for the suspension frame...if that is what broke and then caused the tranny to blow, it is covered under the recall!!! I pray that is what it is.
Just so glad I was somewhere safe and not driving when it happened.

Hopes that its something simple and relatively inexpensive to repair.

well it's not the frame, so it's not covered. A spider gear broke and punctured the tranny...so now we have to take it to a transmission shop...we are looking at minimum 2k. Can I cry now?

rats, what a thing to happen, and now of all times. course, I guess anytime is a bad time for something like that to happen. karma says you are overdue for some good news to compensate so be looking for it!

we are now deciding if we should get it repaired(we have to get a whole new transmission) or just buy another car. The guy at the transmission shop said, it will be starting at 2k and who knows how much it will cost... Needless to say I have cried a bit now...Wayne is home and we are trying to have cool heads about it but I am so sick to my stomach.

Oh Jen I'm soo sorry! I've had such great luck with Hyundai, I guess it's just something that could've happened to any vehicle. My prayer for you and Wayne is the "cool heads" thing (my mom would say sleep on a big decision like that) and that God will bring you two something wonderful for this little poop on you December parade! Gosh, why I can't I win the lottery and help my friends?

This is terrible news! Sending you prayers that this won't be too serious...cars can be soooooo treacherous! I'm glad you weren't on the road driving when this happened. I'm having a tough time myself....received a Christmas greeting from the IRS two days ago. They want presents! Lots of them. I have to file several returns and refile a couple. Maybe you could say a prayer for me too. How a person can live in complete poverty and still have to pay the federal gov. is just beyond my understanding. Keep us posted on your car Jen. =(

I'm so sorry, Jen! Mine has issues, too, and it sucks!
I don't know much about cars, but I do know that 50,000 miles isn't that much. Mine has 125,000 and XBF's has 175,000. How is the car otherwise? I'd say if it has no other issues, I'd pay to have it rapaired. The $2,000 is awful to have to come up with, but that amount sure isn't going to buy you another car with only 50,000 miles on it. -
GD, you took the words right out of my mouth. If the car's been well taken care of, it's worth repairing with only 50k miles on it. And you're darn tootin' there's not likely to be any car that can be purchased for 2k with only 50k miles.
(I'm biased, though; I will drive cars until they can't be fixed any more. But that's also why I tend to get manual transmissions, since a clutch is much less expensive to replace than an automatic transmission.)

Jen, I am so sorry that this will be a costly fix for you at this time of year. I am grateful that you and the children were not hurt, had you been on the road, the outcome would have been different. I am with you with this.
Love, Lynn

You might want to check Kelly Blue Book for the value of your car. If the repairs exceed the replacement of said vehicle, which I doubt, at least you have some informative facts to consider on the appropriate route to pursue. At 50K, your car is a "baby", with many more years of service.

The car has been taken care of, which is great. We bought it at 6,000 miles and have had it for 6 years.
However, we bought it used...for 17,000....so we should check blue book for sure first. Then we shall see. We plan to take it to the transmission shop tomorrow to get a more realistic estimate then plan what direction to go in.Posted 1 year ago by cricketsmama #

I don't know what else to say, but I am wishing you the best. Having an older car, 2005, bought in late 2004, new, we are now having problems with things breaking down and we only have 57,000 miles on ours. We don't go anywhere, just back and forth to work, errands, and such. The kids, Terri, took it to Kentucky and got more mileage, but we are a local car. They tend to break down. You have our prayers.

Thanks Lynn. Thanks everyone. It just seems like when it rains it pours! holy moly...I am more gathered now...clear headed about it. We will do what we have to do...we need the car.
Hugs to you Karen, I will keep you in my prayers too. Always something...bah!

Oh CM - That is terrible news! And the timing certainly DOES suck monkey toes! Sending white light and hope that the repair is not as costly as they think! {{{CM&family}}}

CM, let me know if you would like some advice. By no means am I an expert but I can answer some "car business" questions if you would like some input...that goes for buying a newer car or fixing the one you have now. There are pros and cons to every situation... but it sucks to be in this position this time of year :(
And holy crap, you must not drive a lot! Had the car 6 years and only put 44,000 miles on it? My car is 6 years old and I have 153,000 on mine! LOLPosted 1 year ago by roxysmommy #

Jen, please don't cry...I'd have to cry, too, and that would give us both a headache. It will be okay. I promise.
I had to trade my Maxima for a Kia because of a slow transmission leak. At first it felt like a huge step down. Now I love my new car as much as the Nissan! The Kia was Emma's idea and, as usual, she was right.
