  1. I've been considering getting pet health insurance lately for my 4 Kits. My husband's company recently began to offer it through Met-Life, so I decided to look and see what's offered out there. (Met-Life coverage stinks. They will not cover kitties at 10 years of age, and 2 of mine are there already.) There are a lot of insurance companies out there that would LOVE to take my money, but I don't know which one is best for me.

If you have pet health coverage, would you mind sharing your experience? What should I look out for if I buy it? What kind of coverage is better?

  3. Great question! I would also love to get some feedback. I have even heard that some get pet insurance through their family insurance.

  4. Here in the UK there are two types of pet insurance - the best offers life cover, ie if your cat develops a condition after the policy starts, they not only cover the initial treatment, but ongoing treatment for the life of the policy. This was invaluable when my old cat Titch became diabetic, as it meant I could put in claims every six months for his special diet food and his insulin.

I also look at it from point of view of one off expensive incidents. If I had to spend several hundred - or more - pounds to treat any of our cats, I would, but I'd rather spend the £7 a month per cat on insurance, because it's a helluva lot easier to find.

  5. I used to have Pets Health, but found the premiums were much more than the benefit. The most expensive thing on an indoor cat seems to be dental, and the coverage is not enough to make it worth while. My company has it through Met Life also, but I feel unless you have an outdoor cat who is more likely to have an accident, it is not worth it.

  6. I looked up a few pet health insurance companies on the Internet and found that there are different levels of coverage at different costs. The basic level covers accidents and serious illnesses. (don't know what they consider 'serious'), but the next level is more sensible because it covers annual exams and routine shots. That's the one I would choose if the cost is not too prohibitive. Most of the companies will give a quote over the Internet as long as you put some basic information in. The one I found to be relatively reasonable was ASPCApetinsurance.com Although they, like others add on a 'service' charge of about $10.00 / invoice if you do payments instead of paying the yearly amount up-front.
In reading some literature on the subject, I found out that veterinarians often have health insurance that they sell in their offices. I'm going to check that out and see if its competitive. Good idea, because why buy insurance if the vet I use does not accept it??

Still looking for anyone who has had good or bad experiences with pet health insurance who can give some advice. Please chime in any time.

  7. I asked my vet about pet insurance. They accept VPI, ASPCA and one other. They said that their clients were most pleased with the ASPCA coverage. I would like to hear from anyone who has any of these coverages - good, bad and undecided. Thanks
