  1. yay Georgie, glad you had a better night!......

...... I've been putting off the inevidable of switching Abby over to wet..... she won't take a bite of ANYTHING but her beloved dry!........ I know I need to do it, I am just having a hard time bring myself to do so :(

  2. I've started feeding my boys a bit of wet every day. Mi loves it, Bobby will lick at it a bit on most days, but doesn't really eat the stuff, just licks up a bit of gravy. He'd never forgive me if I switched to all wet.

  3. Fancy Feast canned is roughly 90 calories per 3 oz can.

A 10 lb cat needs 206 calories per day.
An 11 lb can needs 220 calories per day.
A 12 lb cat needs 233 calories per day.
A 13 lb cat needs 246 calories per day.

Of course, cats are all differant, and needs differant amounts. That is just a guideline - some cats are going to need more (more active) and some need less.

  4. Thanks for the info, FF50. He's currently 14 lbs, but the vet thinks he needs to lose a couple of pounds. Argh, this is so confusing. I just want to do what's best for George. Should I aim for the number of calories for a 13 lb. cat, to cut back slightly, or aim for the amt. for a 14 lb. cat. He's not super active, except in short bursts once or twice a day.

  5. I feel for you, Kilroy.....things CAN get very confusing...you just want to do what's right for Georgie...and not every vet knows everything. If that isn't the cutest thing about George putting his mousies in his bowl ♥

  6. I was hoping I might find his second-favorite mouse in the bowl this morning, which would mean he left it there, but no such luck. He probably just needs time. Poor boo, all this confuzzlement.

  7. I would aim for the 13 lb cat amount; let his loose the wieght he needs to slowly. If he looses wieght to fast feed a bit more; if he seems to be gaining wieght feed less.

  8. Pickle dumps her scrunched bits of paper in both the food bowls, much to Eric's disgust!! Has George got to give up all dry food? Even if it's prescription?

  9. Sorry I missed you, MCW. Vet said no dry ever again, but I'm not 100% sure I trust him. I haven't heard back from him, if/when I do I'm going to have a bunch of questions.

  10. It is much better for a cat to not get dry food if they have ever gotten a UTI. UTI's are caused by dry food and/or stress...and the prescription stuff has ingrediants that look more like it is meant for chicken feed, not food for a carnivore.

http://catinfo.org/?link=urinarytracthealth is a site, written by a vet, regarding urinary tract health as well as what to feed.

Your Cat: Simple Secrets to a Longer Stronger Life ( http://www.amazon.com/Your-Cat-Simple-Secrets-Stronger/dp/0312358016 ) is written by Elizabeth Hodgekins, DVM. I can get it from the library, and you could probably order it from the library if they don't have it. It is a great book, with sections on a lot of feline diseases, and what to do.

  11. I would trust the vet, Kilroy, honestly, he might be rude and unhelpful but it seems to me that he really does have Georgie's best interests at heart, it's just humans he's not very good with. I've known of other cats who are subject to UTIs/blockages and have gotten the same advice, no crunchies, never again, it's just too much of a risk. You could find other vets maybe who say, no worries, it should be fine, a few crunchies now and again, but would they just be telling you what you want to hear? How worried about Georgie are they? (Of course if you could find a good vet who had Georgie's best interests at heart AND was kind to hoomins too, that would be the ideal :-) )

Ring him up if you have loads of questions for him, it should be part of the service he's providing to keep you well informed about your cat's condition and how best to help him, plus it will put the boot on the other foot for once ;-)

  12. Did you ever hear back from the vet? I bet he is hungry. Taco used to get starving when we wouldn't feed him his full 5 oz can. We used to feed him 1/2 a can a day. That's when he'd eat the most people food (stealing anything ranging from hot dog rolls to peas when we'd turn our back for 1/2 a second). He'd eat through bags of chips and bread and anything, crying and meowing and begging for food. We couldn't leave ANYTHING on any counter or he'd find it, chew through the bag, and eat it. He'd eat literally 1/2 - 3/4 a loaf of bread if he found it left out. Now that he is able to stomach a normal amount of food, his love for people food has slowed down. He still enjoys "bad" people food like bread and peas, but he doesn't steal them or beg for them. He just eats the tiniest bits of them as the occasional treat.

  13. I never did hear back from the vet yesterday; they close at 1 on Saturdays.

I gave fuzzbutt a little extra wet food this morning and all of a sudden he was rocketing off the walls; I think he's been lazing around the last few days because he just didn't have the energy for anything else. He did chase his mousie some, but not a lot; today it was "Play with me Mommy! More! Again!"
