I would trust the vet, Kilroy, honestly, he might be rude and unhelpful but it seems to me that he really does have Georgie's best interests at heart, it's just humans he's not very good with. I've known of other cats who are subject to UTIs/blockages and have gotten the same advice, no crunchies, never again, it's just too much of a risk. You could find other vets maybe who say, no worries, it should be fine, a few crunchies now and again, but would they just be telling you what you want to hear? How worried about Georgie are they? (Of course if you could find a good vet who had Georgie's best interests at heart AND was kind to hoomins too, that would be the ideal :-) )
Ring him up if you have loads of questions for him, it should be part of the service he's providing to keep you well informed about your cat's condition and how best to help him, plus it will put the boot on the other foot for once ;-)
