Stray Kitten Chased to My Door-PLEASE HELP

(33 posts)
  1. I am completely new to this forum and I am sorry to be so needy right away. A beautiful kitten was in some sort of scuffle and appeared on my back patio. I think the is about 6-8 weeks old but I am not sure. For the one day we have known her, she seems very friendly. I live in an area where there are many barn cats that keep their distance from humans but this kitty is not afraid of people at all. She eats, pees, poops, purrs and plays. The problem is, my husband, who meant well, gave her wet adult food. She had the worst gas I have ever smelled!! She didn't have a runny BM but a little stuck to her and she didn't like it when I cleaned her up. She also started sneezing. She has no discharge or eye goop. She has no sign of ear mites. Her belly is a bit distended so I am thinking she might have worms. OF COURSE this had to be on a holiday weekend so I can't even think of taking her to a vet until Tuesday because it isn't an emergency.

    My Limited Kitty Rescuing History

The last kitty who came to our door had a URI, worms and ear mites. He was only 4 pounds and he was 5 months old. He was precious. Very friendly. I kept him for two months and he was 9 pounds when we got him neutered the week before Christmas. It ripped my heart out, but we decided to give him a home so he could be an indoor/outdoor cat. He was always trying to get out and we live on a busy road and I didn't want him hit, nor did I want to have a nervous breakdown trying to keep him inside or fighting with my husband if he clawed anything. He is now living with a lovely family who needed a kitty his age to replace a cat for an autistic boy who adores him. I was very sad to see him go but he was such so good with children (they had visited before and loved him, and he them, there are three kids) that we thought it was a good idea.
Plus, my husband wasn't too keen on cats. His last day with us was on Christmas Eve.
Then BAM, this TINY (compared to his predecessor) little girl comes here and STOLE MY HUSBAND'S HEART. She is all black and very shiny. He named her Velvet. She follows him around the house, licks his face, nuzzles him, even tries to climb up his leg so he can hold her. She seems to want to be in my arms to get to him if he is around and kneads on him and does all of the kitty marking behavior. Mr. "we can't afford another pet" named her, got her food, a toy and is letting her sleep in a bed on the floor in our bathroom closet, which is very roomy. She has her litter box near by and fresh water.

    My questions:
Do you think she could be healthy? The last kitty was negative for everything (feline leuk, HIV, etc) and I suspect she came from the same people who won't get their cats spayed or neutered and it drives me mad. OR she could have been dumped. That happens out in the country. I am a city girl and have never had a kitty just show up, never having been to a vet.
She sneezes now and then, but she has clear eyes, but her meow doesn't sound loud at all. It is like she lost her voice- could she have a URI? She is breathing normally. She is drinking. Not a ton, but a normal amount.

She had horrible gas like I said but it seemed to go away. She was literally starving. Perhaps she ate too much? Her belly seems very full and she is very playful. I am just concerned about the sneezing and gas. I didn't see any worms in her stool. I don't know if her belly is bloated or just full from finally having food in it. I guess time will tell.
Sorry this is so long. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Hi, Cheryl, well, if she's eating, pooping and playing, then I'm sure she'll be just fine until the vets open again. She probably does have worms (would account for the gas and the bulgy tum, but then most kittens do have worms) but it sounds like she'll be fine until you can get her to the vet. It would be sensible, however, to quarantine her from your other kitten until you can get her checked out.

Just watch for her suddenly not wanting to eat or being very lethargic, those are the danger signs with kittens, but otherwise, if she seems fine for now, she probably is. And get her to the vet when you can. Welcome to TDK!

  3. Awww sounds adorable. She probably needs to be dewormed but otherwise she seems healthy from what you described, since she is friendly and eating and playing

Actually a lot of kittens don't meow until they are older. We didn't hear our kitten meow until she was well over a year old. She still barely ever meows; she just makes a sort of squeaking sound.

  4. I would agree with Jcat. She seems not to have any emergency health needs, but I'd get her to the vet next week to check for worms. Cats can get gas with a change of food so the new food probably caused that. Get her on some kitten food, preferably canned, or raw food. Dry food is best avoided for all cats as it is loaded with unnecessary carbohydrates and causes dehydration.

  6. Congrats on the newest member of your household, she prob has gas due to the food change (jmho). I would take her to the vet next week for a check-up and possibly have her dewormed then. If your avatar is the picture of her, she is a cutie :)

  7. Congrats and welcome to TDK!! I have nothing to add to the already helpful advice you've received but thanks so much for rescuing this kitten. They do get inside your heart quickly don't they? :)

  8. Thank you so much for your encouragement. She had some loose stools but it doesn't seem to bother her. She is still purring very loudly, rolling over, kneading us and her bed, and pouncing after her toy. That IS her in my avatar. The other cat I rescued I gave to a family who needed an older kitty for their autistic son and her other children love him so she is the ONLY kitty in the house. She is so precious and tiny. Her little anus seems irritated from the loose stools but I have been keeping her clean and it goes back in after a few minutes. I am going to try to take an upload a video of her.

So you think it is just worms? I think so, too after readying this site for a few hours! This is such a blessing! So much valuable info from people who love animals as much as I do.

Frankly, she seems in much better shape than Winston (the other rescue) was when I got him. I was clearly ready for the vet to say he had some dread disease but all he needed was a round of antibiotics, a dewormer and ear mite stuff. He is being completely spoiled and is playing and safe.

Now, since I have a little kitty on my hands, what food do you recommend and how much should I feed her. If she is a pound I will eat my hat.

Thank you SO much for the information. I look forward to getting to know all of you and your furbabies.

  9. Hi Cheryl,if you can get wet kitten food to help her bulk up a bit that's good. Also the best quality of dry food you can get.

  10. Baby Cat by Royal Canin has both wet and dry kitten food in a 0-4 month formula, then one for older kittens from 4 months on when they are big enough.

  14. She's adorable! So glad to hear she's doing better. Sounds like she's stolen your heart, and your husband's (they have a way of doing that, don't they?).

  15. Yes! She is very gentle when not going completely bananas over her toys. And has such a loud purr!

Posted 1 year ago by BunnyDee #

  16. She's precious!

Posted 1 year ago by Buttercup #

  17. Of course she has a loud purr - she has a nice warm home instead of living in the big scary outdoors; she has parents who are wound around her paw instead of spending her life trying to keep away from big things that want to hurt her; she has her own bowl where food magically appears instead of having to dig through trash or try to catch bugs; she was a soft comfy bed instead of dirt and twigs; and not only does she have time to be carefree and play but she has real toys to play with.

Yep, that's one happy kitten and she's purring as loud as she can make sure you know she's happy with her choice of homes.

  27. Welcome Bunnydee! Hee hee hee, smart little girl, to get the less-than-enthusiastic MAN wrapped around her tiny paw right away! Little girls and their 'daddies' always have very special relationships.

Welcome to TDK, I hope you stick around and we get to watch this new Velvet grow up!

  28. Warm welcom Bunnydee with purrs & headbonks for you & new little kit Velvet! (?A little bit of special deja vu with new members as Cheryl & Velvet!)

  29. yes, my Velvet died in September 2009 at the grand old age of 17 years and 2 months. she had CRF and hyperthyroid. the night before I had her put to sleep, she had a stroke.

my Velvet was a shiny shorthair black half siamese kitty with a white spot on her chest where a pendant would be on a lady.

  30. I am so sad about Velvet. :( She looks so much like my little girl. It sounds like she had a wonderful life and was a great pet!
