In an article today on YaHoo!

    http://cats.about.com/b/2011/01/28/aflatoxin-found-in-kroger-pet-food-processing-plant.htm?r=94

In mid-December, Kroger Co. announced the recall of certain pet foods in 19 states. The cat foods recalled included Pet Pride Cat Food, Pet Pride Kitten Food, and Kroger Value Cat Food, and the reason stated for the recall was “these products may contain aflatoxin, a toxic chemical byproduct that could be harmful to animals.” In early January, the suspicion of aflatoxin was confirmed by TN state investigators.

The true tragedy is that so many consumers do not realize that cats are obligate carnivores. Cats no only do not need corn; their guts were not designed to digest corn properly. Even corn not tainted with aflatoxin has the potential to harm cats in other ways:

•Feline Diabetes: A dry cat food packed with carhbohydrates is the number 1 cause of feline diabetes, and corn, as the cheapest carbohydrate, is most often used in inferior dry cat foods.

•Allergies: Corn is a known allergen and can cause itching, dry flaky skin, and sometimes, diarrhea.

•Excess Weight: A diet high in carbohydrates such as corn is the main cause for overweight in cats. Excess weight can also contribute to heart disease and arthritis, along with diabetes

Just for ducks, read the ingredients on a bag of Kroger’s cat food. One review I read showed corn as the first ingredient, followed shortly by ground yellow corn, and corn gluten meal. Would you really want to feed your cat food fit only for cattle and pigs?

The bottom line is that you can do your cats a huge favor by feeding them canned foods rich in meat protein. If you feel you must supplement with dry cat food, select one with an absolute minimum of grains, and NO CORN. You will be doing your cat a favor, and can put away your fears of aflatoxin poisoning.

Premium Dry Cat Foods for Adult Cats

Containing No By-Products, Chemical Preservatives, or Unnamed Protein Sources

    By Franny Syufy, About.com Guide

    .

Since a number of premium dry cat foods have been introduced recently, my picks have been significantly changed. I would feed any of these foods to my cats, and they rotate through several of these selections, not necessarily in this order. Alternate with premium canned food for a well-balanced diet for your cat.

Please keep in mind your own cats’ age, medical condition, and nutritional needs, as there is no “one-size-fits-all” solution for feeding our cats. Also keep in mind cats’ individual tastes – some cats may dislike some of these foods immediately, and some will tire of the same formula in time.

    Innova EVO Dry Cat Food

Innova Evo cat food is closer than other commercial dry cat foods in matching the nutritional quality of a raw food diet. It is very palatable and my test cats eagerly ate it. For cats without a medical intolerance for high protein (such as kidney disease), it’s well worth the effort to look for Innova Evo in a feed & grain or other specialty store. My own cats rotate EVO as part of their dry food diet, along with other foods in this list. Top listed ingredients: Turkey, Chicken, Turkey Meal, Chicken Meal, Potatoes, Herring Meal, Chicken Fat.

    Wellness CORE Dry Cat Food

Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul

With four fresh meat sources: Chicken, turkey, duck, and salmon, this relatively new cat food with the fanciful name has rapidly become a favorite among About Cats forum members’ cats. I appreciated the manufacturer’s integrity in not claiming “human grade meat.” Coupled with a respectable list of ingredients, that’s reason enough for this food to become a regular staple for my own Guide Cats.

Blue Spa Select Chicken & Brown Rice Formula (Dry)

Blue Spa Select Cat Food by the Blue Buffalo Company introduces a new concept in cat foods: the addition of nutrients and cancer-fighting antioxidants in “cold formed” bits scattered throughout the package. Cold form processing preserves nutrients and antioxidants that can be degraded by the extreme heat of normal pet food processing.

First listed ingredients: Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Whole Ground Brown Rice, Whole Ground Barley, Oatmeal, Salmon Meal, Whole Potatoes. I’m not wild about the carbohydrate content and my cats carefully picked out the “blue bits” and discarded them. Still, I think it deserves a spot on this list. There’s no accounting for cats’ tastes, and some readers say their cats love it and thrive on it.

Aflatoxin is serious, for people as well as kitties. It’s the poisonous mould that more usually grows on peanuts. It would be interesting to know what process enables it to get into or grow on cat food ingredients.

    Ah, I see. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aflatoxin

It can grow on all types of grain, as well as ground and tree nuts.

Thanks, Deb. The article on good dry foods is useful too, the array of stuff you have in the US is bewildering.

Jane, and the stuff listed there is only a small portion of it. Whatever you want you can find somewhere either in stores or online. Not that mine will eat a lot of it, they turn their nose up at the supposed ‘good for them’ foods including the raw like liver and such.

Deb, we all know that if a kitty really doesn’t want to eat something, she or he will starve sooner than give in. They are sooooooo not like goggies.
