  1. The vet called today with Charlie's test results and.... he doesn't have cancer!!! Now we just have to figure out what he does have... FID or Feline leukemia or some kind of other auto immune disorder. We are about to head to the vet now for the tests. I let you guys know what we find out when I return! Wish us luck!!!

  9. ok, Charlie has feline leukemia virus. It's better than cancer but... still not the best thing. The vet told us that we can keep it managed as long as we keep him healthy. So we started him on a multi-vitamin today to help boost his immune system. He will stay on the prednisone because that seems to make him feel better.

  10. Charlie is lucky to have a mom who will give him the best care possible. He will feel much better soon, I am sure!

  14. I know that FeLeuk kits can live long and healthy lives. I think BestFriends.org has a section on that on their website. I'm glad it's not cancer and it something you can manage. Bless you and Charlie!

  15. Butterfly, you have another kit, right? I would talk to your vet about getting her tested, and if she is negative, how you can reduce the chance of transmission. I believe that they have a vaccine; although it is not 100% effective, it might be something to consider.

  16. Thank you so much! Charlie has been pretty lethargic the past few days. He is starting to get diarrhea. The other day it was green and last night it was clear and looked like mucus. This being after I basically had to force feed him because he wouldn't eat. I put water in him with a syringe just to keep him hydrated. I wet some of the food for him and mixed some multi-vitamin with it. Had to make him take a couple bites then he started eating on his on. He didn't eat much but I felt better with him having a little in his tummy. Hopefully he will come out of this in a day or so. Sometimes hes very blah and other times he a normal kitty. He just has his days...

  17. Are his gums pink or white? If they are white he may need a blood transfusion. I don't want to scare/worry you but those are not good signs. I've watched babies die from this and I know that some live very long and happy lives, it depends on how sick he is right now.

  18. Poor Charlie! I hope he feels better soon...

I have had to force-feed mine on occasion, until they started feeling better. Sometimes gently warmed pure meat baby food is more appealing than cat food- just make sure NO ONIONS! With diarrhea, dehydration is the biggest concern- can you search this site for Pedialyte and tent test for more help?

    Posted 1 year ago by Kiplings_cat #

  19. So glad it's not cancer!

I'm giving Glen Jr. Pedialyte mixed with water right now, too. The other day when I was trying to catch a flea (eww!), I quite accidentally performed the tent test and found that he was dehydrated. Pedialyte has worked wonders in the past, so I ran straight to Target for some.

  20. What exactly is the tent test? His gums are very light pink. They are closer to white than pink though... ugh... I'm taking my other cat to the vet tomorrow so I'll let her know whats going on with Charlie too.... looks like I'm gonna need more credit on my CareCredit card... I'm in a financial hole right now with 3 sick pets... this sucks!!!

    Posted 1 year ago by butterfly29053 #

  21. That does suck, BF. Try this to test if he's dehydrated:

  23. You may want to check out this group

I have been with them for years--ever since my 9 month old Sox died of FeLV. My Russian Blue baby lived with it for a 2 years. It is difficult to deal with, but not impossible--sounds like you have an excellent vet that is working with you. I use Lysine on my cats--helps boost the immune system. FeLV+ cats are contagious. Separate food and water dishes and discourage mutual grooming if they are mixed. Whether you mix those that are + with those that are - is a choice everyone has to make. I personally didn't think mine would do well if separated, so I mixed. My FeLV- cats are still negative. Prayers of love and support to your little guy!

  24. I will check that out. thank you. My 2 cats won't do well separated, they cry and whine. My Lily has been vaccinated so hopefully that will protect her. I'm also giving her the vitamin to boost her immune system to help fight it off.

    Posted 1 year ago by butterfly29053 #

  25. My Russian Blue was 4 years old when he contracted--he had been vacinated every year. Please know if mixing that vaccinations do not always work, and you should have your cats that test negative, tested every year to ensure that if they do contract it, they are treated as well.

  27. I will make sure I have her tested every year. The vet did tell us that the vaccine doesn't always work but if we gave her the multi-vitamin it could help because of the immune system. So we will see. I wish I could seperate them, but I don't think the stress of being alone would be good for Charlie. He hates being alone!
