  3. The last flu shot I had was in the 60's shortly after they started them. They were taking a leaf from the Sabine vaccine and using live virus to make the vaccines and lining the school kids up like cattle to administer the FLU to the school population at large.

I was one of the victims that came down with a raging case of the Flu from this "Benificial Health Measure", once for each of the two years this torture was inflicted on me. I managed to contract the flu one more time my Junior Year on my own over the Christmas Holiday and relapse a week later because I had to return for Dead Week before I had convalesced enough to have my immune system rebound.

That lead to a confrontation with my home room teacher since I had to then come to school with a raging case of the FLU II while taking mid-terms. He had the audacity to complain of being at school to administer tests that he had the cheatsheet to grade from if he couldn't remember his own answers. He threatened dire consequences if we even breathed wrong. I threw my aspergum (you could still bring reasonable OTC's to school) at him and the South Paw (me) connected with his forhead (talk about providence) while I shouted him down about being there with a relapse case TAKING the stupid tests and he could shut up until he cornered the market on being sick and take some gum.

He sheepishly complied and gently returned my gum. Sometimes it is safer not to mess with me and he showed a fine sense of self preservation in this case.

    POINT:

Today having not had the Flu in over 40 years my annual checkup which occurs during the "season" has the following Abbot and Costello exchange.

Dr: Have you had a flu shot?
    Me: No
Dr: Then let's get you one.
    Me: Let's not!
    Dr: Why not?
Me: Dr the two worst cases of the flu I had were over 30 (35-40) years ago and followed having the vaccine. I haven't had it since high school Why waste the money?

I have since acquiesced to take a Pneumonia vaccine on my Pharmacist Daughter's advice since the main fatal complication of the Flu is Pneumonia and I am over 50. No flu shots though.

  4. I also don't get flu shots because I'm allergic to eggs. I've heard they've come up with new ways to make the vaccine with using eggs. I also haven't had the flu in years (knock on wood), But why screw up a good thing if it ain't broke.

  5. I'm like Susie, I don't get the flu shot because of allergies. I've have a pnuemovax, I think, one of the 10,000 times I've been in the hospital, and I'm 8 years from my last tetnus shot.

  6. I hadn't had any of the shots until right before Xmas this past year, with having pneumonia 3 times last year...the doc insisted that I get the flu shot, pneumonia and the one for shingles. She wants me to get the tetanus shot next month since its been 15 years from the last one, but don't know about that yet. Always figured that the 14 years worth of allergy shots should have made up for everything!
