C'mon Earth, settle down for awhile, give the people of ChCh a break and time to catch their breath.

  4. 5.3 @ 11km deep followed by a 3.4 @ 8km deep 10 minutes later and followed by a 4.1 @ 9km deep 2hr 41 minutes later.
So unsettling and scary for the people of Christchurch. I just wish the earth would stop moving but that's not going to happen for some time there unfortunately.

  5. I know it needs to just calm down even for a little while so everyone can get something done before the cold really sets in.

Not the ideal way to live but when your house has been destroyed or so badly damaged it's better than tents, sheds or campervans. You never expect to have refugee villages in your on country.

  7. I've just read that there is now a building leaning in Chch, more liquifaction and power outages.
Here's an interesting thread about where the children are sleeping tonight after the quakes.

  8. I'm confused. What's the difference between an aftershock and an actual earth quake? I understand that aftershocks usually come after an earthquake, but if they cause this much damage etc, why arent they classified as earthquakes? (geography is soooo not a compulsory subject here in sa)

  9. Wow, earthquakes are popular tonight. Queensland Australia, had 5.2 a few hours ago and now there has been a 5.0 up my area of the Island. We didn't feel anything probably because it was a deep quake.

  12. Sky, Wiki explains it better than I could but I think an aftershock -- though it is still very much an earthquake -- happens on the same faultline as the original earthquake and is a continuation of that particular bit of movement of the faultline.

  13. This is quite disturbing!!! What is going on??? NZ keeps getting shook up as does Japan! In the USA we are having horrible weather and bad tornadoes. I wonder what we did to upset Mother Nature so much! Stay safe littermates!

  14. Yes it seems mother nature is pi$$ed :(

  15. I wonder if one big earthquake knocks everything off balance and starts a chain reaction because the earth is all messed up?
