Newborn kitten after storm

  1. I wanted to take him today, but due to my bf being an idiot and getting arrested all my money went into gas since he no longer has a job now. Thanks for the support everyone, it helps alot to know there are people to help out there. :)

  2. Kitty's sick, he's been throwing up today and being oddly quiet, he has to go back to the vet this week for another dewormer, if I can come up with the money to get him there. It's white foam coming up, so maybe he just ate too much or had too much air in his tummy...

  3. Okay, does oddly quiet mean 'flat', lethargic and limp? Has he stopped eating and drinking? If so, you need to get him to a vet asap. If nothing's wrong, great, and he can be dewormed then, but these are very bad symptoms in a kitten.

There is a pet credit card scheme, I'm not sure of the details as I'm not in the US but it's called Credit Care or something similar, it can help you spread vet payments.

You might also want to think about another vet, it's important to have a good one, check around family and friends for recommendations.

Try to keep his fluids up if he's not eating, click on the 'home-made pedialyte' thread and smear a little light-coloured Karo corn syrup on his mouth (no big lumps, nothing he can choke on) to keep his blood sugar up.

  4. He's still moving around, but it's slower and more sluggish, like people when they eat too much, he eats fine still, but he's wanting to gorge himself until I'm afraid he'll pop, he's peeing and pooing fine as well, it's just the throwing up and being slower and not as loud.. He's not crying as much at all and when he does it's more little squeaks than it is his normal ear piercing cries.

  5. Its Care Credit and if you can get it, it helps with the vet bills.

  6. Just tried to get it, I can't because of not having income right now.

  7. Another question, my neighbor has kittens that are about 2 months old, would it be good to have another cat that the one I have can grow up and play with? I've heard that hand raised kittens can have odd behaviors if they aren't socialized with other cats

  8. Okay, I don't like the sound of that, even though he's still eating well, if he's throwing it up, he's not getting much out of it. The big danger with throwing up is that he'll get dehydrated so I would stop giving him food, try the tent test on him and even if he's not dehydrated yet, just give him pedialyte for the next few hours until he can keep it down without chucking up again. Once he can keep the pedialyte down, you can try him on wet food again, mixing in a little extra warm pedialyte. You don't have to buy it, you can make it at home from the thread I'm going to give you. Obviously a vet would be the very best thing, but until you can manage that, keep him warm and comfy and plenty of fluids.

Yes, two kittens are always better than one, they keep each other entertained and occupied and cuddle up together and are never lonely. You would have to make sure though that each kitten is in good health and has had all its shots before you let it have any contact with the other because otherwise one could pass on sickness to the other one.

I'm sorry you can't get the card, it always stinks to be short of money, especially for vet bills, but maybe your vet would take payments, or maybe you could check round for low-cost vet services in your area.

  10. I'm pretty sure he's eating too fast or too much, it's only when I feed him he gets sick, and last night he burped almost to the point he threw up on me again, it's not food coming up it's just foam, and not much of that, this has only started since I finally got him to use the bottle, I'll start using the dropper again to limiit his eating speed and amount and see if that helps

  11. From reading all your entries, I think you may need to get him back to the vet soon (within 24 hours). If he's aspirated formula, and throwing up foam, he may actually have gotten kitten milk into his lungs and is developing pneumonia. That would explain serious amounts of lethargy and the change in his crying.

Of course, it could be that he's simply overeating to the point of puking a bit when he overeats. The lethargy could just be from being full, and the smaller amount/type of crying could mean that he's not as easily distressed any more, but rather reassured that you're there.

There's no good way to know, really, without being able to take his temperature, listen to his breathing and heart rate, and ask further about changes in his behavior.

If his food intake and his elimination are still both good, that would be great news! It may also be that he's starting to get ready to wean, if the formula isn't satisfying his appetite any more.

Sorry, I don't know. Keep asking questions, and undoubtedly others here will be able to provide good advice.

  12. Also, you can keep going with the bottle, just make sure you're feeding him while he's on his belly, with his head tilted slightly back, like these:

If you feed him on his back, he'll swallow a lot of air (which can cause that foamy burping you may be seeing).

    Good luck!

  13. He's wanting actual food, I was eating breakfast yesterday morning and he tried to make off with my bacon, litterally, and got it halfway off the plate before I saw him. I thought three weeks old was too young to wean though?

  14. I have another question about his eyes, are all kittens eyes not looking foward? his pupils face out, not foward, just wondering if thats normal

  15. If the kitten is showing interest in solid food, it's not too soon to start setting down a tiny plate of 1 part wet food, 2 parts kitten milk (mixed together thoroughly). I find that a small plastic lid, like from a yogurt, cottage cheese, or some other food container works well, as long as it is very shallow.

If the kitten learns that food delivery can come from licking up food, not just sucking it down, then you can begin to transition to solid food. Make sure you do this over a few days, otherwise the change to solid food is pretty rough on their gastrointestinal tract and can cause problems on the output side of things.

    Good luck!

Oh, and it's normal for kitten eyes to look a little outward at his age. They aren't quite able to focus all that well yet. (I wouldn't be concerned about it, unless they're still that way when the kitten's 12 weeks old or so.)

  16. Ok, cool, he's gotten super active lately and has started pottying on his own, normally all the way down my shirt when I try to burp him. How in the world does he hold that much liquid?? It's a crazy amount that comes out of him, and I'm running out of shirts to wear, going to start sitting him on a towel when I feed and burp him. I'm thinking he's not so much bloated as he is fat, he eats quite a bit, potties almost as much as he eats, and burps like a man. He's started playing, causing incredible scratches to my hands already, and he's gone from cuddling with his stuffed bunny to attacking it, he seems to be doing very well now. I think we're going to be ok. I've tried to start weaning him, but all he managed to do was stick his nose in the milk several times, so I'm afraid he'll drown himself in his attempts, so I'll try some on my finger since he'll actually lick that.. and bite it.. and chew on it..

  17. We've reached the one month mark, and he's had his second bout of de-wormer, and that was oh so FUN to get down him. He seems to be doing ok so far, he's wandering around alot and playing.

  21. Tripled in size, but eating alot less.. He has no interest in the kitten food, still drinks the milk and tries to steal my food, but won't eat the soft food. He eats less than an ounce a day, and at a month old I'm pretty sure he should be eating alot more than that..

  22. YAY, sounds like your little dude is doing pretty well. Keep offering the food, maybe try an alternative in case he's being picky :-)

  23. I've tried so many different kinds of soft cat food I think Wal-Mart's going to know me by name lol. He doesn't want the cat food of any kind, only my darn steak and fish. >.<

  24. If the little rascal won't eat soft kitten food, try kitten kibble. Just make sure he's still getting a lot of fluids. You can add more water to the milk so he's getting more fluid. Have you tried diluting the soft kitten food with his formula?

  25. Well we've made it this far, and he's learned how to escape his box/crate, so keeping tabs on him is pretty interesting. My dog has adopted him as her own "puppy" it seems, though he's not too thrilled about her massive tounge. He ate his first actual food yesterday, I had to mix soft food with a can of tuna and put it in MY bowl to get him to eat it, but he did. He's taken a liking to climbing on our shoulders and cleaning our ears, not sure why.
