I just got a new four week old kitten Sunday. He's just now getting big and strong enough to start playing. My question is what kind of toys do you guys recommend for a kitten that young?

Every toy possible and then crunch up a piece of paper as a little ball & that may be his most fave!(Tee hee!) Actually something he can manage size wize little fuzzy ball, mouse or feather wand you can move around to chase! Go to the petstore or pet dept...you will find a handfull!

Feathers are tons of fun for them, but you may want to make it a toy that they use when you are around. String is another fun game that should only be played when you are supervising. But, yes, you will find all sorts of safe options for independent play in the pet toy aisle. (5 minutes ago I discovered that one of mine just ate some feathers off a toy. Those types of things can cause dangerous blockages in their intestines...so I'm concerned.)

an athletic sock rolled up inside another one and then knotted closed...they can bunny kick it to death...you can add catnip to the inside sock when he is older and cares about it. Usually kittens aren't interested it catnip. You have to make it move for him at first tho.
And congrats! what's his name and what does he look like?

He's an orange tabby and his name is Sammy. He doesn't really seem interested in alot of the toys I bought yet, but I think its just because he's still young. He loves his monkey though. Its a huge stuffed monkey 10x his size. He'll sit on it and love on it all day long. He liked watching my rats (they're in a kitten and cat proof cage) until they started watching him too. That kinda freaked him out.
And ECB, I hope your cats are ok. Best of luck with that.

OMG, Maddy May, is that your baby in your avatar? (must be, orange baby with big monkey). SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! He's adorable! And I love his big monkey friend.
Ahem. Got a little overexcited there :) I love orangies and wish I'd had my George when he was that small.
Have you thought about setting up a Catster page for Sammy? You can put more pictures there, and you can link your avatar to the Catster page so that when some clicks on the picture it takes them to Catster (feel free to try this with my avatar, although I haven't updated the pictures in eons). We would love to see more of Sammy.

Catster is http://www.catster.com - it's like Facebook for cats :) You can upload lots of photos and do other cool stuff (I've only gotten as far as the photo thing). If you run your mouse over people's avatars on this site, most of them are linked to Catster pages.

May sound odd, but since my girls chew through the plastic milk rings, I purchased a baby's teething ring/rattle. The rings had opening to take them off the master ring for cleaning. They love the lightweight items. Mnemosyne even plays fetch with them.
Another toy they go bonkers over is the little plastic frogs that you pinch the tail to make them jump. I call them flippy frogs. The girls act like they have caught a real live frog when they 'hunt'. They are just as proud as though they caught a mouse.

Pickle's favourite toy is the DVD drawer in the DVD player. She will appear from wherever she was sleeping when we open it (it makes a distinctive sound) and then sit and study it. When we close it again, she pounces. She's getting quicker, she caught it last time!

Catkin loved the Kong Kickaroo (or Linda's idea- stuff an old sock with other old socks and knot closed). Kittens love to grab it with their front paws and teeth and kick with the back legs. Of course, Catkin was 10weeks when we got him.
Also shoestrings for supervised play. They are much thicker so clumsy kittens can grab them better, and sturdy so they can't easily chew them through (although they could stilll swallow them- so supervised only).

Mnemosyne (M-Nee-Moss-zen-nee) The Greek goddess of Memory also the origin of the word Mnemonic meaning a device for remembering (e.g. Roy G Biv for the colors of the rainbow)
Her sister is Euphrosyne (U-Fross-zen-nee) The Greek goddess of Mirth also the origin of the word Euphoria.

Thanks, everybody. My mom loves him too. She's demanding I bring him to her house this weekend..I'm optional, the kitten isn't. He's been stealing everyone's heart the past two days. I'm so proud he's mine.
And those are beautiful names Ailuromaniac. Very beautiful. I love greek mythology but never thought of naming my kitten after them. Instead I named him after Sam on Supernatural. :D

my 5 week old kitten loves anything shiny. Lets see she took off with a necklace I left out (my own fault) she has taken a ball of tin foil out of the trash on me. Oh she also loves to take my 4yr foam blocks and roll them all over. Hmm you should wait a week or two and Im sure by then the whole how will be his for the taking lolz.
And *gasp* you should have named him Dean! Sam is the one with demon blood....but then again if you named him Dean he might hump everything. Maybe you should call him Cassital or Cass just to be safe.

Inspiration for names come from all over. Books you have read. TV series and movies you like. Namesakes from other sources.... They are all good. Most names are chosen spur of the moment. Mnemosyne was chosen years before the kitten came home.
Mnemosyne and Euphrosyne were by a rather long conCATination inspired by TS Elliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats"...
1) The Naming of Cats -- and, of course, all the other poems
2) Andrew Lloyd Weber writes a musical "Cats"
3) The theme of the musical is "Memory"
4) Wouldn't it be nice to honor all the cats that have been in my life by naming my next furbaby "Memory"
5) Cats were worshiped as God's and Mnemosyne was the Greek Goddess of Memory.
6) OOPS! I chose to get two baby's so they could keep each other company. Now I have to find a euphonious name to go with Mnemosyne's sister.
7) Scour the mythology for a name that goes with Mnemosyne..(Lethe the Goddess of Forgetfullness and Mnemosyne's sister was rejected because Lethal did not have a positive feeling the muses...nymph's...nyads... dryads... lots of research)
8) Serendipity strikes.... One of the 3 graces has a euphonious name with a wonderful tributary name Euphrosyne the goddess of Mirth
9) Talk it over with the girls...
10) Back to 1...They have their formal names, the short names are Mneme and Frossie...Their secret names they have yet to tell me...Sam is a good strong name and knowing kittens the demon blood is appropriate.

Soft and furry ball!!!!!! I don't know if your kitten will love it but mine love them so much. I would buy a dozen of them just to let my cats play whole day... Btw, don't forget their water! :)

My Leela loves soft furry balls too AussieSwede! They are slowly falling apart though; they are made of yarn but she loves to play with them.
They may not be appropriate for a wee kitten though, as she may ingest the yarn pieces.Posted 1 year ago by JoanfromNewJersey #
