  1. Sorry about the school job, M&MM. I know you will find something that suits you. Looking for work is a full time job in itself, isn't it? Stay strong. {{{hugs}}}

  3. You will find the perfect job! I have faith!

  4. Sorry about the school job, M&MM. I am sure you will find something that is what you need.

I worked two days at the temp job at Seagate and the commute is just awful! It takes an hour and 15 minutes to get to and from the office. Also, found out on Friday that the permanent job that they were saying could possibly be mine after three months, now is looking like they might go ahead and hire a temp or a permanent employee. The permanent possiblity is only located 10 minutes from the office I am working in and isn't closer to home like I had thought it might be. The commute will be basically the same. The company has only three openings for admins - one is the an Office Assistant in Longmont, CO (not moving of a lower level job), second is the position in Fremont (not closer to home as I had originally thought) and the third is EA/Assistant to CEO but it is located even farther away from home and is located in an expensive area to live in - see map and zoom out to see how far it is from San Jose Area - http://maps.google.com/?q=loc%3A++Terrace+View+Dr.+at+Scotts+Valley+Dr.++Scotts+Valley+Ca+US
which means Hubby wouldn't want to relocate and I would have to really think if it is a good idea. Either way, I don't think they would consider me since I don't have 5-10 year experience working for a senior management in a large publicly traded technology firm.

So this means, yes I will keep the Apple interview just to see what they look like but am not sure about it as the commute would also mean relocating. I am going to keep looking for a permanent job closer to Alameda.

Actually landed an interview at a company in Oakland on Oct 2nd but that means coming in late on that date. I already have two other days I need off as well.

Hmm...starting to think maybe the temp job at the Biotech is a better situation since it is a better commute (45 minutes in the am and about 40 minutes in the evening as long as I leave by 4:30pm) and it is closer to SF which enables me to be able to do job interviews on lunch breaks, etc. I really do not want to spend so much time commuting to a job that may or may not have a permanent opportunity. If offered a perm job, would have to relocate to Fremont which may or may not be okay.

So I will think about this all over the weekend. Sorry I haven't been on much these past two days but with training, cannot log on.

  5. I'm sorry to hear the Seagate job isn't what is what cracked up to be. Life's never easy is it? So, we're all fingers and paws crossed again for Apple. You're doing well at getting interviews, that should boost your confidence!

  6. I forgot to mention, the commute of an hour and 15 minutes each way is in my car since I would have to take BART (train) to Fremont and then figure out how to get to the commuter train (Altamont) and I am not sure if it even stops in Milpitas. If it does, would have to figure out how to get to the office. So the car is the only option. Also, it is mostly stop and go till I get north of Union City Area.

Thanks MCW. Apple may not be the answer either as it is an equally long commute that could be just the same or worse. I am still going to go check it out as I would like to at least see the location they are in.

  7. Sorry your having such a hard time with it all Karin. We'll keep you in our prayers and hope that something comes up that is right for you.

Give a call if you want to get together again and we can do lunch or coffee or something, OK :) We are still unpacking and doing homework so whatever is fine

  8. Well, I am considering going back to the Biotech temp job since it is closer to SF and I can go for job interviews easier on my lunch break or come in later or leave early but the problem I am thinking is that since I took two days off in a row sick, they may say to me on Monday, we are sorry but it isn't working out as you have been out too many times (now four days in two months). So I could be out of work for being too choosy with my jobs. Frustrating!

I need to find a permanent job that has multiple opportunites as well as other branches in interesting locations so that I can consider relocation when the timing is right. If only I could win the lottery..even just a small amount enough for me to take as much time as needed to find a new permanent job and not worry about taking temp jobs only to end the assignments early. Wish hubby was working a job so that I wouldn't be so pressured to take temp jobs.

Maybe it is just me. Maybe I am just being too choosy. I was told by my parents that if you are going to work, find a job you like. Life it too short to be in a job you do not like. Well, that saying has caused me to have had too many jobs in my lifetime so far as I seem to not have ever been satisfied. I like the job but they do not pay me enough so I go and get a job that pays decent but I don't like either the person who is the manager or the people I work with. What I need to look at is if I do a job I don't like for long enough, the manager will either move on, get promoted or retire. Well, that takes time and sometimes the manager never moves.

    Frustrating!

  9. ppearson, I forgot to say thanks for the YouTube video with the parody of the movie The Office set to James Blunt's song. I enjoyed it and saved a copy on my computer. I have a copy of The Office on DVD and have worked a position that the boss had similar behavior and the employees were unhappy.

  10. I just discussed it with my husband and he said after hearing me out, if I cannot tolerate the commute to Seagate and really want to find a job closer to home, then I should risk it and go back to the Amgen job with the understanding that it could end tomorrow. The commute, the flexible hours, the covered garage, the cafe on the first floor, and the close proximity to San Francisco and East Bay has encouraged me to continue with the temp job till I land a permanent job. I should enjoy the fact that I am being paid even if there isn't a lot to do. Also, the people I work with are friendly and pretty much pleasant (except that one employee who I really don't care for but I will make a good effort to ignore her).

I will contact the Seagate temp agency and leave a message tonight that will be a bit of a white lie stating that I received a permanent job offer on Friday and am going to take the offer. This way they won't be so upset with me. I am leaving only after two days so it isn't like they invested a lot of training into me, plus the pregnant woman at Seagate isn't planning on going on maternity leave till around Oct 8th and isn't due till approximately Oct 24th (depending on the baby and all).

Also, I have found out that it seems the agencies do not communicate with one another in their other branches. I guess they are so competitive that they do not want to refer a prospective employee to another branch as they will not get the commission associated with that employee. So if I need to use this agency ever again, I can always go to another branch but hope that isn't the case.

In the meantime, I am considering cancelling the Apple appointment but will think it over tomorrow. If I don't have the Amgen job as of tomorrow, then I will still go to the Apple appointment. If I can keep the Amgen temp job, then I will cancel the appointment as it would mean relocating to an area that is even more expensive to live in and a lot more crowded as well. I do have an interview scheduled for a company located in Oakland at 8am on Oct 2nd so if I am still at Amgen, I will notify them that I will be in a little late on that day. They are large engineering firm. Also, RBC Dain Rauscher (San Francisco Office) has called me and I believe they will probably do a phone interview. I have yet to interview there in person so I won't think much about them till it happens.

Hope to find what I really want and that it pays a decent wage with opportunities in other locations so that I can consider relocating at a future date.

  11. Karin, good luck on the job search(s), the one worth waiting for will come thru for you. Have a great day ;D

  12. Karn, I highly recommend you be apologetic, but honest and tell the Seagate people you sat down with your husband and weighed all the facts accompanying the position and feel it's not right for you. It's always best to be honest, so you don't trip yourself up at a later date with remembering what-you-told-whom. I'm an advocate of telling the truth for a much more practical reason than morality: The truth only comes in a single-pack. There's only one version of it. So if you tell the truth, you don't ever have to wonder which version of it you told.

  13. Karin, I agree with Jo, just tell them the commute would cost you too much money and the payscale wont offset it. Anyone should be able to accept that. Keep us posted about all the irons in the fire.

  14. Well, all said and done with Seagate. Now am waiting to see if all is okay with my temp assignment at Amgen. Guess I will find out today later. Manager is out and the other direct report who would check up on me is out on vacation this week.

So far so good. Verified with IT that I am still active and they said yes.

Hubby informed me that for now, I should just focus on working the temp assignment till it ends in January unless a permanent job offer comes in. I will only interview with companies in SF and East Bay area that hopefully have branches in other locations.

Posted 4 years ago by SylvesterMiasMomma #

  15. Sounds like a good plan.

    Posted 4 years ago by KYKAT 12 23 #

  16. do you think all the jumping around my show up as a negative on you resume Karin? And if you are truly fed up with your husband why does what he thinks matter? I not trying to be mean but looking at the other side a little. Jobs today are hard to find good ones anyway in Calif things seem to downsize alot while other parts of the country are not you may need to leave there to find the perfect job you live in the most expensive area in the country. again just the devils advocate here

    Posted 4 years ago by kathyanne11/13 #

  17. KathyAnne - Thank you for your input but the jobs are all temporary positions that I have been talking about lately and do not get posted on my resume unless they are for a long period of time (example - 3-6 months and are senior level positions). Amazingly enough, there are a lot of temporary adminstrative assignments that could eventually become permanent depending on the company performance.

If you go and read the posting titled fed up with hubby you will understand why his opinion matters now. We have basically have an understanding for now about everything and I am on a three month plan meaning if things get better for the both of us, then there will not be a need for me to move out, etc. If things do not get better by January, then I will consider moving/divorce or whatever I decide to do.

  18. Karin, I'm glad you and hubby are working through this together. Perhaps you'll be able to salvage this marriage and make it work. All marriages go through a slump -- even couples who celebrate 50th and 75th wedding anniversaries have had times when they didn't think they would make it. If for no other reason than to help you financially, I think your 3-month plan is an excellent one.

My heart goes out to you, dear Karin. You are a strong, intelligent woman and a beautiful person. I'm so proud to know you.

Posted 4 years ago by Jo in Blairsville #

  19. Karin, I just did a catch-up on your blogs.
I am with Jo - I think the 3-mo plan is a great idea. I also think that the way you look at all the options of each opportunity is a smart thing to do.
I am still sending positive energy that you get what you want in the near future. Good luck.

  20. Well so far so good at the Biotech temp job. I guess all is okay for now. I got contacted by Electronic Arts for a temp job. I told my husband last night - "am I only good for temporary jobs"? I had applied for a permanent job there. Yes, I know temp jobs are good to get the toe in the door but it doesn't make sense if one is already working a temp assignment to get people contacting them for temp assignments at the companies where they would like a permanent job. Have to finish this assignment first before I go off pursuing other assignments. No sense on rocking the boat at the current temp job if I have to interview for a temp assignment at another company.

Still on the fence about going to the Apple interview. Out of the office from 11:30am to possibly 3:30pm on this Thursday isn't going to sit well with current temp job and just after being out for two days.

I want to visit Apple just to see/hear what it would entail and to find out if it is worth the visit. Commute could be just as bad as Seagate but am not sure on that as one could use Hwy 280 instead of 101 and it might not be stop and go but still would take about an hour to get there. Also have interview at 8am on Oct 2nd at a large engineering firm that is a much better idea since it only involves riding the bus for about 20-30 minutes.

Hopefully will figure it all out.

  21. Good luck, Karin. I just wish I had the opportunity to interview for something!
I'm in a very small town, and there isn't much in the way of jobs right now. I'm signed up with 3 temp services and the Unemployment Agency, and haven't had one call yet. Talked with a friend who is the Editor of the local paper (am employee owned company) and let her know I'm unemployed. She said she'd put in a word with the HR department. She's a long time friend of mine and my sister and will be in my sister's wedding in a couple of weeks. We'll be sharing a room and the Bed and Breakfast we booked, so I'll have a chance to talk with her. My first job was at that newspaper many years ago.

  22. Good luck to you M&MM! I really hope you find something soon. That would be really great if you could land something at the local newspaper. I will be thinking positive thoughts that something good happens soon for you.

  23. M&MM You are not that far from TOLEDO have you thought of looking there I would think they would be looking for Christmas hhelp in the malls and stores around there. With UAW on srike in this area alot of people will need temp jobs good luck

    Posted 4 years ago by kathyanne11/13 #

  24. Hi KathyAnne (Anne is my middle name, too) and Karin,
Thanks for the good wishes. I have been checking the Toledo ads, too. Unfortunately, I've got some physical problems that keep me from standing up for a long time. I need a sedentary job, like secretarial, receptionist, data entry type jobs. As I said last week, I did get a call from one of the temp agencies, offering me a part time job at $7.15 hr. Actually, they didn't reach me because when I answered my phone, there was no one there and it came up "restricted" on my caller I.D. I just found out about it because I call in every week to let them know I'm still available. Nevertheless, I'd have turned it down because I'll make more drawing unemployment. I'd much rather have a job than collect unemployment, but I want a job that's worth my while.
I've been working for over 40 years and I've got a wealth of experience. Sometimes I think I'm looked over because I'm older and because I'm over qualified. But I gotta keep looking.

  25. Awww, sorry you're having all this trouble finding a job, Max and Molly's Mom. I hope you find something real soon - best of luck!

Posted 4 years ago by GreatDane #

  26. Hi Max and Molly's mom,

Sorry to hear that the job at the school didn't work out. I heard or read something about searching for jobs in your local area for free, I think. I typed it in, and it looked like you could get a list for jobs. The address was www.jobs.com
It might not hurt to take a look and investigate it.

Posted 4 years ago by Renee in Arkansas #

  27. Good idea Renee.

M&MM - There is also www.craigslist.org that could help with your job search. You would first click on the state you are in and then it gives you some areas in that state. I hope it helps you in your job search. Thinking positive thoughts that something good comes your way soon.

  28. Thanks for the tips, you guys!

  29. Good luck Karin and MMM.
Sending positive energy that you both get something soon.

  30. Apple interview today from 12:30-2:30pm. Met with three different people and felt it went quite well. I think I would enjoy working there abeit it would be fast paced but nice and busy. Hours would be 9-6 and would have to relocate south to around Belmont or Redwood City but there seem to be some places that might be doable rent wise. Also, just had a phone call with Morgan Stanley for an Executive Assistant position in San Francisco and they want to set up an in person interview next week. They are going to firm that up tomorrow. I have an interview on Oct 2nd at 8am with large engineering firm in Oakland and then an interview on Oct 8th at 10am with Royal Bank of Canada Capital Markets in San Francisco. So lots of interviews and hopefully something will pay off. I am very interested in Apple and Morgan Stanley. Apple won't be making their decison for a couple of weeks as they said the position wouldn't probably start till third week of November (just before Thanksgiving, hmmm strange start time).

How are things going for M&MM? I am thinking positive that something will come your way soon.
