  1. MR, so glad to hear that you and the fam are feeling better--loved the blog--LOL at the description of the on hold music 'cause I, too, hate the Jack and Diane song!

  2. I LIKE Jack and Diane - but then, I'm a product of the 50s. You had to be there. LOL
Thanks for that enjoyable dissertation MR.

  3. wow you have some big missconceptions about the flu vaccine. Number one it does not contain mercury, actually all current vaccines are no longer made with mercury as a preservative. Two the flu vaccine does not make you sick, it is dead virus that is grown in chicken eggs, so even if it were still alive the virus can't survive in human cells. You get sick because, one you already had the virus before you got the shot, or you were comming down with something that is simmilar to the flu.

  4. MR..that was a scary yet entertaining story. You're a pretty funny guy..I've always had issue with doctors who refuse to consider a patient to ever have half a brain where their own bodies are concerned. If you ever find one hang on for dear life. Glad you're all feeling better. I don't get flu shots and I can't remember the last time I've had the flu. My turn could be coming up but I doubt it..I think myself well instead of think myself sick...and I just don't get sick.

  5. ab, Sorry. Didn't mean to dis your song. I'm glad somebody enjoys it. That means that it's not dead airtime when it plays.

    Thimerosol is made of mercury.
Normally, I don't get sick from anything. Vaccinations usually do cause symptoms in healthy people. Ask your doctor. Not even they will deny that little tidbit.

  6. MR I work in the medical field and I know the advances they have made, you are using outdated and missunderstood information to back up your point

Posted 4 years ago by TheKnittingNinja #

  7. I hope you are right. I don't mind being wrong on some things. I still don't see the benefit of the masses getting vaccinated for influenza, though.

  8. Hey, wait a minute! The link I posted was updated this Monday! Did they stop using thimerosol sometime this week?

  9. MR, I have not had the flu in many years ,except for the one time 3 years ago that I gave in to pressure from my doctor and got the flu vaccine. I received the kind that is squirted up your nose.

I remember thinking at the time, "This is INSANE to be squirting FLU up my nose to prevent me from getting the flu that I never get."

Four or 5 days later I came down with flu symptoms and my doctor confirmed that I had it. He insisted that it was *not* from the vaccine and that I must have already been infected before I received the vaccine in his office.

Hardly scientific, but it's just my experience. No flu vaccine for me!

  10. The flu vaccine is NOT just for old people! It is recommended for people over age 65, but also urged for:

*those with chronic health conditions that suppress immunity such as (but not limited to) diabetes, asthma, liver, and heart conditions.

*women who are pregnant during flu season.

*anyone not in one of the above categories who lives with or routinely works closely with someone in a category above.

This means I have taken the flu shot EVERY year since my youngest was diagnosed with asthma over 10 years ago. Since then, my hubby has developed every one of the conditions described above (except, of course, pregnancy), so it is DOUBLY important that our entire family get vaccinated as early as possible. I usually start calling the doctor and the county health clinic (it's always a crapshoot as to which one will get the vaccine first) at the first of October.

If you fall into one of those categories, it is VITAL that you get the vaccine to help keep the virus from spreading; those that don't get it for any reason other than medical contraindication just increase the chance of infection for everyone else. No, I don't like needles or soreness, but I'm not going to be so selfish about my dislikes that I endanger the health (or possibly life) of those around me. Taking 2 Tylenol or Ibuprofen before your appointment will alleviate the soreness associated with getting any vaccine.

In those 10 years I have only caught the flu 3 times: in 2002, last year, and this year. In all three cases, the strain of flu making the rounds was not covered by the vaccine, and all three cases were developed MONTHS after immunization (it takes 10 days-2 weeks for the immunity to build; about the same length of time it also takes to show flu symptoms after exposure).

I don't know whether flu vaccines contain thimerosol or not. I do know, though, that thimerosol is indeed mercury-based and that some people are allergic to thimerosol. Eggs ARE used to manufacture the vaccine and, again, some people are allergic to eggs. Either allergy would be enough to contraindicate vaccination. Health care providers are supposed to ask about allergies before administering, but it is ultimately up to the patient to speak up if he doesn't recall being asked. That's just common sense.

I'm sorry, MR, but Michael's blog is very dangerously full of inaccuracies and misinformation and should be edited or deleted before he gets held liable for something.

I do sympathize about the aggravation of dealing with doctors and their receptionists/overloaded automatic phone systems these days, but my greatest complaint is showing up early for your appointment, being made to wait 2+ hours AFTER your appointment time to go to the exam room, then waiting another 45 mins. in the exam room to spend 5 mins. with the doctor. Meanwhile, you have watched 4 pharmaceuticals salespeople breeze right by the receptionist to see the doctor with no waiting! I can understand having to wait a long time to see the doc if an emergency arises, but NOT being treated like this on a routine basis! Then, just to add insult to injury, you get a bill for $135!

No, I'm not in the health-care field, but my life experiences has trained me to observe, question, get facts from several sources and share that info with others when the need arises. Thanks for the opportunity.

  11. I am on a ventilator due to polio (missed the polio vaccination in 1955 by 3 weeks-we lived in a small rural town then and it was slow in getting to us) and I get the flu shot every year, as well as all my immediate family, because if I did get the flu it would easily morph to pneumonia-and with my lack of respiratory capability, it would be fatal. So I am a firm believer in vaccination- cuz polio was no fun, and a flu shot, mercury or no, is preferable to death! I think it is a very individual matter and a lot depends on your own health history. Just my 10 cents...(increased from 2 cents due to inflation!) :-)

  12. Ginny...I am one of those that are allergic to eggs. Thru the years,I've been careful around flu season. Alot of people ,for whatever reason, don't show consideration when they do come down with it(like staying home & not spreading it to others),so I guess I don't contract it out of luck or stubberness.

  13. I understand that, Susie. If I were a virus, I wouldn't want to mess with you, either! (lol)

Shut up, Instinct. Don't even think it! ;D

  14. I still agree with MR wholeheartedly...If it isn't broken don't fix it!When my kids were growing up we didn't get flu shots then either..My youngest was asthmatic and none of us ever got the flu...Just lucky? You tell me...

  15. Well, I thought it was fun and funny. I didn't imagine that it would get people up in arms. I still don't see myself standing in line to get a vaccination for something that is such a minimal health risk to me and the people around me. But, that was not really the point of the entry, anyway. There seems to be a lot of controversy associated with vaccinations. In the medical industry, I often wonder what the facts are, and what "facts" are enforced with weighted studies. (Eg.- aspartame safety or tobacco usage dangers.) Admittedly, I don't know a whole lot about vaccines, and I'm not sure that I would unless I had a lab and could conduct independent studies of my own. Since I am not a medical professional, the government would kind of frown on that activity anyway.

Ginny, I would agree that you and your family probably should be getting vaccinated, and shouldn't be anywhere near my house when we're under quarantine as we were this weekend. I also don't think that my family and I should be crowding up the vaccination line when you are trying to get yours. That's just not cool.

B & H's Mama, you probably know more about it than I do, but allow me to reserve my agreements.

  16. I didn't say anything Ginny.... I thought it, but I didn't say it :)

And MR, I'm with you about vaccinations - I don't get them either and I haven't gotten the flu either. Last time I got vaccinated guess what? I was sick for the whole next week.

As for Thimerosol, yes it's made with mercury, but there haven't been any studies that link it to any health problems. The last one that tried to link it to Austism has pretty much been debunked but still, I'm not a scientist so I really have no opinion on it :)

Posted 4 years ago by Instinct #

  17. Have you all seen the link I posted about it? It was from the Yahoo page today on the lack of a link between Thimerosol and autism.

Posted 4 years ago by Catwoman #

  18. I read the report a few weeks ago CW, but I did see the link. Great minds :D

Posted 4 years ago by Instinct #

  19. MR, your blog maybe "full of inaccurracies" but I have to admit that I found it to be pretty funny. I'm an RN and I have to admit that I don't get the flu vaccine, either. I don't mind giving shots but if you put me on the receiving end you had better have on track shoes because I'm going to bolt. I had a terrible experience with needles when I was very little and I have never gotten over my fear of them. And, I can completely sympathize about your experience in trying to find a physician. We live in a city where almost all of the physicians have closed practices and those that don't you don't want to see! I had never encountered that before moving here. It's insane and only contributes to the gross overloading of ER's since people are using them as their primary physicians.

In any event, I think the decision on whether or not to receive some vaccines (not the ones that are legally required!!) should be left up to the individual. Thanks for some great chuckles today!
