  1. Ok! Loved the introductions so I thought that I would talk a bit abou myself...
My name is Marina and as you know (or might guess from my 'nick') I am Spanish.
I live in Madrid with two meezers. Pipa and Melon. Melon (male) is two years old more or less and Pipa (female) is just over a year. I love my cats dearly and they are very loving and affectionate, I have never understood why people say that cats are unsociable when my kitts welcome all newcommers.
Please excuse my bad English, I only use it at work and so coloquial talk isn't my strongpoint.
I am a Civil Engineer, which in Spain is not very common for a woman. This means that I am always having to proove that I am as good, which is very tiring.
32 years old I was in a very long relationship which ended last summer. Just started a new one (I told you guys about) and everything is going too good to be true.

That's it! willing to answer any questions.

  2. Hi Pipa's mum. Glad to see you are back (and that things are going well with the new guy).

I'd like to ask a totally non-related question. Where do you think one can find the best paella in Madrid? I was there last year, but my gastronomic adventures were a bit hindered by my mother's aversion to eating out. Still, I had such a great time I just have to go back!

  3. Madre de Pipa, I know I've said it before, but I'll say it again: You do NOT have to apologize for your English! I wish a lot of our native speakers were half as erudite as you are! I'm an English teacher, so trust me, you are getting an expert opinion here!

It's so cool that you are a civil engineer. My grandfather was one, too, and I get a special feeling when I see something that he built. Some of his projects include the bridge over Tallulah Gorge in Georgia, parts of the US highway system near Danville, VA, and the parts of the Pan American Highway that go through Nicaragua and Costa Rica. I still have some of the home movies he made of blasting while building the Pan American Highway way back in the early 1940's.

Got any tapas left over--siesta time just ended (that means my last class just left--ha, ha!) Send 'em over!

    Love ya!

  4. Pipa's Mum, I thought about you today. I was at our local farmer's market. (an outdoor market where local farmers can bring produce to sell) and there was a man there with preserves. In your honor I asked about when he would have apple butter and it won't be for a couple of weeks as it isn't apple harvest season quite yet. When he has some, I will get it and think of you whenever I eat it!

  5. Hi Pipa's Mum. If my Spanish were even a quarter as good as your English I'd be delighted! I teach languages (German and French) but never really got round to learning Spanish. I can only just order wine and tapas, and say hello please and thank you.

  6. Hi Pipa's mum,
I agree with Ginny - your English is super!
And I, too, think is's great that you're a civil engineer. Hooray for women's lib!
I also think it's wonderful that you live on the other side of the globe and we can be friends just because we love cats.
    I have a household (7 now) and 3 dogs.
    Love hearing from you.

  7. Wow! I wasn't expecting so many answers! With so many new things to look at now with the new format and everything!
Thank you so much for appreciating the efforts I do with my English you are so kind!
It is so cool to have so many American friends and sweet that you think of me when you have all those American goodies!
To answer some of the questions:
    - Paella is the typical Spanish food but it isn't eaten much in Madrid, you find a super paella in Valencia for example. In the capital we have other type of specialities. So if any of you come to Spain PLEASE tell me before and I will tell you the bes places to go to and what to ask for!
    - For all those who don't know something we Spaniards often do is have a beer and some 'tapas'. These are small dishes of food that are given with the beer, more elaborate in the north of Spain and simpler in the south.

    Big Hug!

  8. Hi Marina - It is good to get to know you better! I am very impressed - a civil engineer! As artstabobbi says, hurray for womens lib! And your English IS really good! I have worked with many non-English speakers and I think your command of English is one of the best I've seen. There were times when I wondered whether you were actually a native English speaker who was living in Spain.
I have only been to Spain once, but I really loved it. We were in the south - Granada for a users conference, and then a long weekend in Sevilla. Everywhere we went for the users conference we were given Spanish omlette (I forget the Spanish name - tortilla patatas??? - Please don't laugh too hard!) and were entertained by flamenco dancers. I'd love to visit again and see Madrid!

Purrs and headbonks to you from me and Tikka! :-)

  11. Hi Pipa's Mum Marina! There is a tapas place in Kalamazoo, believe it or not! Best equivalent I can think of right now, is tapas is a lot like dim sum. Little bites of this and that, but you can make a whole meal of an assortment.

  12. Hi Siobham, you live in a place with the coolest name! I need two new cats now! One I will call Popoki and the other Kalamazoo.
And yes, that is a beautiful description of what a tapa is 'little bites of this and that'

Rubia: you where in the south a great place for 'tapeo' which is to go have tapas with friends. Sadly they took you to the places where Spaniards usually take Americans, to eat tortilla de patatas and see flamenco. As you probably know there are lots more yummy stuff for you to try and most of us don't dance flamenco to save our lives! In the south they probably all dance 'sevillanas' which I find lovely to watch.

  13. Dear Marina, AKA Pippa's Mum:
I met a cousin in another state and he had named his cat Kalamazoo. I thought it was the funniest thing I'd ever heard as I live about 35 miles from Kalamazoo which is a city in southwest Michigan. Never apologize for being a woman, a civil engineer or anything else. If you love cats, you're OKAY in my book!!
