  1. I think the potato is the bubble and the cabbage is the squeak, because the cabbage squeaks when you eat it and also as you fry it. Mind you that's just opinion, not knowledge.

  2. Sounds reasonable to me, not ever trying it but it sounds good.

The name comes from the bubble and squeak sounds made as it cooks

  3. You haven't ever confessed to a child that adults aren't omniscient have you? If you have I'll have to descend on NZ with the whack bonk stick. I rely on all-knowledge to survive on a daily basis at school!

  4. PM, lol oh heck no, my kids still to this day think I know *everything* and they are adults.

Posted 9 months ago by AZDEBRA 5/27 & crew #

  5. No no no no, I haven't, really I haven't. The little blighters worked it out for themselves.
Please feel free to descend on NZ though but whack bonk sticks must remain in your luggage - they may scare the sheep! ! !

  6. Oh, yes please. I would LOVE to spend time in NZ. I'll have to wait until I retire, unless I come in NZ winter. Only another 7 years *sigh* I'm the first of those who have been "caught" by the changes in retirement age. My whole life I thought I'd be able to retire at 60, now I've been told that from my cohort onwards we can't access our pensions until 65! *sighs dramtatically*

  7. PM, that sucks monkey toes. We're having the age of retirement increasing here too but I think hubby just escapes going into the group that have to wait longer, unless they change it again which is entirely possible with politicians.

  8. It is just possible that because I have a teachers' pension I may be able to get that aged 60 and just have to wait for the state pension until I'm 65, so I may still be able to earlier (I've just been consulting my union website.).

I think I'll ring the union on Monday. If it doesn't cost me too much financially I might even decide to go sooner than that. *despondent at the beginning of a new term*

  9. PM, hate that you are despondent this year, I hope it works for you.

So the winds of Irene are at 85 mph now.

  10. I hope you can get the teacher's pension after 60. Checking with the Union is a good idea. So it's new term? I guess it must be if you've been on holiday. We have school holidays coming up here, they have been altered to coincide with the Rugby cup, you know the one.

  11. Lol, they alter the schools holidays here to coincide with *Rodeo week(s)*. It used to be when the ranches/farms had to pick their crops, so the holidays were set so the kids could help their parents in the fields.

  12. Back to the *bubble and squeak*, here is a recipe that I found online...Jaime Oliver's recipe for it...

  13. In my area the school holidays are made to coincide with Kiwifruit picking so the senior students can get jobs picking or packing. Helps boost their university funds and fill a labour shortage.

  14. The winds alone would get to me :(

  15. Glad Irene is reducing in intensity.

Our holidays are pretty fixed: Christmas, Easter and Summer, but being in an independent school now I get a bit more, so I get 3 weeks at Christmas, 3 weeks at Easter and 8 weeks in Summer. Staff go back at my school after the Summer holidays on 5th September, children re-start on 7th. Then we have half term at the end of October and the Christmas holidays start on 10th December.

  16. PM, that sounds good for the breaks. I know some of the schools here in the district are now year long schedules and they break for 2-3 weeks every 2-3 months now. Unfortunately the elementary, middle, and high schools even within the same district don't have their breaks at the same time. Makes it hard on the parents to try and schedule vacations without taking kids out of school :(

  17. The best thing about teaching is the holidays!

    Posted 9 months ago by Pollys_Mum_in_UK_2605 #

  18. Ha, thats what I hear!

  19. It's been so long since the girls were at school I have forgotten when holidays are but we have gone to four terms here.
It's after midnight here and time I headed to bed for some much needed sleep.
Goodnight Deb, sweet dreams, PM have a great afternoon/evening. Headbonks to The Crew and Pickle & Garbo.

  20. G'night Jan, stay warm, sleep well and have sweet dreams, scritches to HRH in the morning.

Posted 9 months ago by AZDEBRA 5/27 & crew #

  21. HRH is playing the Princess and the Pea, she's in a padded cat bed that is sitting on a cushion that is in a cane basket in front of the fire. What life ! ! Nighty night

  22. What a nice visual!

  23. Hi everyone! It's quiet here. Really quiet. Ominously quiet. The only branches that are moving are the ones that the squirrels are on. It's super-humid.
I love the tabbies in raincoats - they are so cute! I'm going to have a pineapple smoothie and a cinni bun.

  24. Morning, all!

I don't think any one ingredient is bubble and one squeak - supposedly it used to have meat and cabbage instead of potatoes and cabbage.

  25. Watching the rugby league Challeng Cup Final. Leeds v Wigan at Wembley Stadium. It's a good match. Wigan were 16 - 0 up but Leeds have pulled it back to 16 - 10 at half time.

    Hope it stays quiet Joan.

GD - I still prefer the idea of squeaky cabbage. Why let facts stand in the way of a lovely image?

    Posted 9 months ago by Pollys_Mum_in_UK_2605 #

  26. That's true, PM! Let's just say the cabbage is the squeaky part, then :)

  27. Challenge Cup Final - Some bad refereeing decisions mean that Wigan have won. The current score is WIgan 28 - Leeds 18 and there is insufficient time to score 11 points. That's it. It's a shame it came down to the referee. Apart from that it has been a brilliant match, but Leeds have been robbed. One Wigan try scored from a forward pass, a Leeds penalty (spear tackle) not awarded - Wigan scored as a result, final WIgan try dubious - ball was lost over the line, not under control as it was grounded.

Still it was a great final.
