7 Day Old Kitten

(50 posts)
  1. Hello,

I am new to this forum, I ran into it on google.

Last Saturday, my mom called me over to the house around 9pm at night, because she heard a kitten mewing. We looked all around outside and I was in bushes and everything despite caring about what else lurks inside. Anyways, no kitty there... but still mewing, but I realized the sound was coming from inside the house and it was not my parents cat. So we climbed up the attic and there it was a newborn kitten, I am going to guess 1 day old, because the crying was just discovered that day. There was only one kitten and no mommy. So I have taken this little kitty in.

It has been pretty much a week, I get up every 2 hours sometime stretch it to 2.5 and the latest is 3hrs because I have work or school and no one to care for it. But anyways, the kitten eats pretty well, I have the bottle already prepared, I just fill it to the top which I think is like 60ml or something close, and i refrigerate after every use. And at the end of the day, what is not eaten I throw out and make a new one. So so far as of the last day the kitten will drink almost the whole bottle through out the course of the day/night. I am not sure I overfeed the kitten, because it will sometimes drink a lot and then sometimes not much at all, but does not seem unhealthy.

Kitty is very loving, and loves to be rubbed and burped and purrs and purrs when I hold it. I have been trying to stimulate it every feeding, so far it has pooped every day except the first night I had the kitty and today, but I am still working on today's poop. When the kitty does poop, it is mustard color and comes out plentiful, usually I run its bottom under slow warm water when it starts to poop, until finished. I am just hoping for a poop today... was wondering if it is okay if kitten misses one day of poop, or should I be checking on something?

Its ears are slowing unfolding, and its eyes are a little just barely starting to look as if they are opening. One eye has started to tear a little. Hope that is okay. Other than that, kitty eats, burps, purrs and sleeps. There is generally no crying, unless I have waken it to feed and then it is like Mew mew mew until it is done eating and is sleeping.

So with this said, does it sound like kitty is in good hands??? I just want check, I have fostered a feral kitten before, but it was at least 2/3 weeks and that is my parents cat now and she is 2 years.

  2. It sounds like you are doing a terrific job KT! I'd look after her eye to make sure nothing is wrong but I suspect you would have anyway. :)
Welcome to TDK,your kitty is certainly in good hands!

  3. The fluid from the eye appears to be clear and does not come out too much, I just wipe it when I clean the formula from its face.

Its new thing is to roll around on its back when I am rubbing it, I am wondering if it is telling me its tummy is upset or if it needs to poop. I have become a worried mommy, lol I haven't had much sleep this week, up every few hours and then school and work I have started to drink monster. But I feel as this is rewarding.

Also, I just wanted to ask about bloating, I was wondering how to tell when a kitty was bloated. Its tummy does get really round, but I am massage it and it feels squishy and usually is reduced a bit when I burp it. It might just be because it has not pooped yet today.

  6. www.messybeast.com is a very good site to check out. it will answer a lot of question about your kitten...

  7. What a little sweetie. Is the big black cat your cat tpo? And is he/she helping to care for the baby? Kittens don't necessarily poop every day, and if the big cat has had her/his maternal instincts woken, she may be cleaning the baby up.

  8. Yes the black and white cat is also mine, he does not take care of the kitten, but he is very curious and likes to be around when I am taking care of the kitten. I also have two other cats as well, but none take care of the kitten.

Kitty did poop like 30 mins ago, it was like a small droplet. Could the little eye water be from the eyes starting to open? They only start watering when it gets upset from being hungry or me stimulating it to go potty.

Speaking about my B/W cat, his name is Mischief and he is about 1.5 years old. He just recently had an anal gland infection and is on the root to recovery. This past week and a half have been better for him, except he no longer is willing to use his litter box. I went out and got a new one and some cat attract and have been working from there. He still will not go in on his own, but I have been forcing him in the box, where sometimes he will then go to the bathroom and then run out. I am trying to get him to want to use the box with out the pain assimilation and it is very difficult, because he is dramatic.

Any ideas? I know forcing him in the box is not the best idea, but I am sick of the poop and be being on places like counter tops or the furniture. SO this way it ends up in the box. And then I give him a treat after he uses the box even if I am just forcing him in.

  9. I just wanted to say welcome to TDK. I enjoyed the photos of your two cuties. I feel so bad for Mischief...poor guy....and poor you dealing with the poop everywhere. I wish I could offer you advice but I don't have experience with that sort of problem. You may get more responses to Mischief's problem by starting a new thread with its own title for that topic. Good luck with your two sweet kitties!

  10. Aw! Congratulations on taking care of the kitten! I've got my own black kitten named Mischief too! Your boy is adorable, and so is your kitten! It looks to me like you're going to have a pretty calico when she grows up!

  13. Thank you everyone,

Well I thought I would post an update about the little kitty.

So far everything seems to be running smoothly except myself wanting to do nothing by sleep. :P

Kitty is now 9 days old and the eyes are slightly appearing to want to open. I do wonder about the eyes though, they appear to be watery, but it is clear and also as of yesterday kitty has the sneezes. Kitty only sneezes when I take it out of the basket to feed it and only does it a few times, but I just want to make sure it does not have a cold or if it is just reacting to its new senses. Any ideas?

Other than that, kitty's appetite has changed and seems to be hungrier each and every day, and seems to be teething, because it likes to just chew in the nipple for a few mins. It poops and pees and only crys when I wake it up to be fed, and until it goes to sleep.

There should be a COA Warning. That much cuteness could make a person fall & smack their head on something. lol.

  16. Thanks everyone, I have some new photos to upload soon!!

Today her eyes opened!!!! So excited, but I think it is a bit constipated. Any tips on how to help the little one go potty? It did not poop yesterday, and I know they do not always go every day, but its belly feels a little stiff.

Posted 8 months ago by KT #

  17. Rub the belly and/or rub the belly with a warm wash cloth. Or add a drop of olive oil to her formula but only a drop or two. Or do all three and when fails there is a video somewhere on this site about proper poo-ing a kitten. But I cant seem to remember exactly where its at or find it. Maybe someone eles remembers the triangle method i think its called? Or if all eles fails there is the vet.

  18. Well I know how to make the kitten go to the bathroom, it is just the past few days there has been no poop. I just took my little boy Mischief to vet I also informed them about the kitten not going potty. Its apatite is no different that before and it Urinates, the vet told me if it has not gone by this time tomorrow to bring it in.

I do not have olive oil, only vegetable oil.

Posted 8 months ago by KT #

  19. Vegetable oil will work just as well. I've used pumpkin on my cats when they have problems of that nature. But the pumpkin has to be unspiced. I go for the organic unspiced.

  23. I'm suddenly feeling the urge to talk baby talk. She's too precious for words! Well, it's not very imaginative but when I first saw her face, i thought 'Twinkle'.

  24. Beautiful kittens, KT :)

I myself would also like some info on kitten sneezes... my little one is about 12 weeks old now and she sometimes, maybe once or twice a day, sneezes a little bit (at least I think it is a sneeze). Is this normal if there are no other side effects like respiratory issues, eye discharge, etc.

  25. How very precious, sounds like you are being a great kitten mommy.

Posted 8 months ago by Stevi K #

  26. Thanks, I am still a little concerned about the kitten not pooping. It has been 5 days. But I went to the vet yesterday and they attempted but not get a lot out of the kitty. My idea is that really there is no poop, because kitten is absorbing all the nutrients from the formula. Or like the vet kinda said it is very slow moving or a block. But I am not thinking there is a block. I water down the formula by at least 1-2 teaspoons and have added vegetable oil. I am not seeing anything different. The kitten seems very healthy, doesn't cry unless it is feeding time and I am handling it and it eats well and does pee. The belly is a bit stiff, but that is with feeding and probably some air in its belly.

    Not really sure... ideas?
