Kittie Blankie Project

  1. Do you like to make quilts? Do you like to knit or crochet? Would you like to help kitties in the animal shelter?

This idea started on the February 1st Night Shift. Thanks to Kitten Whisperer and Mama Lynn for the encouragement. The idea is to send kitty blankets to the Burke County Friends for Animals ‘Chester’s Place’ cattery. I’d like to be able to send the kitty blankets to the shelter in mid-April. Everyone reading this post is encouraged to join in.

The blanket should be about the size of a hand towel or kitchen towel and HAS to be washable. The blankets can be quilted, sewn, crocheted or knitted making sure all loose ends are firmly secure. Please NO buttons, beads, fringe, ribbon or anything that could possibly become a choking hazard or entanglement problem for the cats and kittens.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

  2. Would a donation of kitchen or hand towles work from those of us who don't sew?

  5. I'll be happy to give it a try. Been a few months since I've knitted a stitch, but it's probably like riding a bike (to use a couple worn-out cliches).

  6. PPearson & HM - Sure. I don't see why not.

BHM - Kick in the butt?! lol. Anything for a friend.

Catherine - Happy to have you along for the ride.

  7. I'm afraid the poor kitties could find NO use for something I may quilt, sow, knit or whatever. If there's anything else I can do (but DON'T ask me to cook - that would be worse for the kitties than if I sowed something!!!!!)please let me know - I'd like to help!

  8. I do quilt but think that quilts might not be the most practical for the kitties. What my kitties have always loved is my old bathrobes that I cut up into little blankets for them. Also, old sweatshirts, etc. Once upon a time I knew how to crochet but now I only know how to do a looooonnnnggg chain stitch and I don't think that would be of much use.

  9. How about Purr Pads? My guys love those!

  10. I may have some sweatshirts I can cut up. Would I have to finish the edges?

  11. Teresa...what a fantastic project to get started.

  12. I'll see what I can do in what spare time I can find. I'm not a fantastic knitter, but I have lots for yarn and needles. I'll see if I can get the two working together with my hands to make something.

Are you going to be the respository and send all at once? Or are we sending individually?

  13. Where should we send the blankets when we've finished them?

  16. Let's confirm what the animal shelter wants before we start sending things. We know it will accept kitchen towel sized blankets/quilts. For those who don't have the time or aren't "crafty," I am sure a monetary donation would be welcome and the shelter could get whatever it needs to care for Chester's kits.

Here is a list from the shelter's website (http://burkecountyfriends4animals.org/index.htm) of items they can use:

You can mail your donations to PO Box 1884, Morganton, NC 28655.

    On Going Wish List
We can always use the following items at our adoption facility:

Paper towels, Extra Large Trash Bags, Newspapers, Clorox Bleach
Anti-Bacterial Laundry Detergent, Anti-Bacterial Dishwashing Liquid
    Hand Sanitizer, Pine Sol Liquid
    Litter Boxes and Litter Scoops
    Throw Rugs, Towels, Blankets
Pedigree Puppy canned food and/or Pedigree Adult canned food
Purina Indoor Cat Food (Green Bag)
Rubber Dog Toys, Balls, Cat Toys
Stainless Steel Shelves, Wooden Shelves, Cork Bulletin Boards

WWM, do you think 100% cotton flannel would be soft enough for a cat or kitten (for those who want to sew a little quilt)?

  18. I spoke to Sharon at the Burke County animal shelter this past Saturday and they are aware of our little kitten blanket project. They are thrilled with the idea and are appreciative of our efforts.

If you are making a blanket or two, please send them to:

    Burke County Friends for Animals
    PO Box 1884
    Morganton, NC 28655

Please include a little note saying the kitten blanket is for Chester’s Place cattery or from a member of The Daily Kitten chat forum.

You can send a monetary donation to the above address also. Or a donation to the TDK Fund would be helpful to lots of kitties.

If you want to use an old sweatshirt or bathrobe for a kitten blanket, I think it is best to finish the edges by applying a binding or sewing the edges under. The blankets need to be washable then put in the dryer. The blankets will be getting a lot of use and need to be durable.

If you want to send an item other than a kitten blanket, please call or email the shelter and let them know what you are sending.

    Their website is: http://www.burkecountyfriends4animals.org

Thank you all for giving the kittens at Chester’s Place a little bit of home. Thank you KM for providing the list of items to donate. You are all so wonderful. ((((HUGS))))

  19. Thanks for keeping this thread at the top of the chat page, KM. It's nice not to have to keep hunting for it. You rock! :-)

  20. Wonderful! I'd imagine that they could even use them year-round.

Me, I've tried crochet and knitting and the results (both my sanity and the items) were not pretty, but I'm okay at sewing and embroidery.

This'll be great since I tend to wear my clothing to the point where I wouldn't feel good about giving it away to humans to wear but could easily sew it into a blanket. Maybe even stuff some light fabric inside to make it a padded blanket?

  21. OMG, what a wonderful idea! Yes, I think it's time to start helping take care of Chester's kitties. My son outgrows/wears out clothing all of the time that could easily be made into something useful for the kits. I personally don't do any crafty stuff but my mother loves to sew so I can recruit her!

  22. No one has suggested what seemed to me quite obvious: fleece! There's tons of fleece in the fabric stores now, some with kittens and puppies on them! All you need to do is prowl for some scraps, cut the edges even, and edge them with a zig-zag stitch, or if you have a serger, one quick pass with the serger on all the edges and you have instant kitty blankie. One of my friends made me two blankies (one for each kitty) when they were new kits to the house. The fleece is snuggly, warm, doesn't pull, doesn't have loose threads, very lightweight, and very washable. This is also a great way to use those ratty old towels that still absorb well but just look a little old. Run a line of stitching along the edges, finish it off, and voila. Blankie.

  23. I can crochet and knit. I can do this for the hour or so I get to watch TV--it'll keep me from falling asleep. If you go to Walmart, they have a bin with discontinued/small lots of yarn very cheap--I'll pick up some and get started!

  24. This is wonderful and I want to be part of it. I crochet and will do so with much love in every stitch. Thank you for caring!
