  1. It was about 4:30 in the afternoon on Sunday and I was sitting in my living room watching TV. I heard a cat miaowing and thought it was my neighbors cat as it sometimes cries when the neighbor leaves. I kept hearing the miaowing so I went out on my deck. As I turned to go back inside I saw a black and white kitten running down the path across the courtyard desperately trying to find a place to hide. I immediately went over and cornered it in one of the entrance ways to two apartments. The kitten hissed, growled and spitted at me. It was so tiny and as I managed to pick it up it bit my index finger on my left hand. I held it firmly and talked softly to it. I did say loudly to the neighbors, I found someone's kitten. A lady came out and said it was probably a stray. The kitten calmed down and I got it inside my place, got into one of my cat carriers and immediately called the emergency vet to say I had caught a kitten and wanted to have it checked out. I got it to the emergency vet and the vet looked the kitten over and it turns out it is a boy kitten about 6-8 weeks of age. The vet said the kitten had fleas and a scab on the right side of it's face that looked like a healing burn as the whiskers on that side were short and some were curled. The vet gave it a dose of dewormer and Frontline for fleas. I named the kitten Felix as it is a tuxedo kitten. I stopped off at Petco and bought a small covered fabric cat bed, a low pre-filled litter box, three cat food bowls, Royal Canin kitten wet and dry food and three toys. I placed water, wet kitten food and dry kitten food in each of it's own bowl and set this all up in my bathroom. I had to put the kitten in front of the wet food as it had curled up inside the carrier. Once the kitten was in front of the wet food, it ate voraciously. After it was done it climbed up onto me to purr and nuzzle my face. Eventually after a couple of feedings and cuddling, Felix got sleepy and snoozed on my chest a bit. As it was late at that point and I needed to feed Sylvester and Mia and then go to bed myself so I put it in it's covered cat bed. Felix curled up to go to sleep. I didn't sleep much but did fall asleep long enough to have a short dream about taking care of a little boy. This morning I refreshed Felix the kitten's wet food and water. He ate both the wet and dry food and drank some water and then low and behold went and used the litter box to produce a hard dark brown colored poop. He peed a little too and then he covered most of it! I was very surprised that he knew to use the litter box as I didn't think a feral kitten would know to do this! This has me wondering if he was someone's kitten or someone's cats had kittens. Also as I held the kitten last night and this morning it let out some gas which concerned me. Is that possibly because of the new food? The kitten seems sleepy this morning and I will go check on it in a few minutes. As long as it is eating and drinking, it should be okay but if it continues to be sleepy, I will go back to the vet. I need to make an appointment for it to get vaccinated and a second dose of dewormer. Both Sylvester and Mia are a bit upset with me. Wen Mia smelled the kitten on me, she hissed. Sylvester seems okay now. Kitten stays in the bathroom till it gets it vaccinations and all the fleas die. I need to wash the fleece thing that was on the bottom of the cat carrier as Mia keeps hissing at the kittens smell on it and I need to wash it also in case there are any fleas on it.

I welcome any advice from our experience kitten fosters. I want to keep the kitten but cannot as my complex limit for pets is two and also do not think my two cats would welcome a third kitty. I probably will foster it for 4-5 weeks till it reaches 10-12 weeks nd then see about finding it a forever home.

  2. I don't have any advice but WOW, how exciting. He sounds like he is doing grat and you are doing great!

  3. Yes it was very exciting. Already this kitten has me wrapped around it's paws. Sylvester is not happy and wants in to the bathroom. Of course I will not let him in.

  4. Felix is one lucky little guy that he crossed your path. Prayers for his continued growth and health. Hopefully when he is a little bigger and more social you will find him a terrific furrever home.

  5. Outstanding and congrats! I wish you and your brood of three all the best!

  6. I thought interesting that on Friday I heard coyotes in my area (heard them again this morning) and there was a hawk circling my complex much lower than it normally does on Saturday. I also saw a vulture flying around on Saturday too. Makes me wonder if Felix and his family scattered to avoid the coyotes and Felix got separated. Possibly something happened to the momcat. Either way, he was barely surviving as he is just fur and bones. He has eaten a good amount and pooped twice now. Poop seems softer and more of a medium brown. He is drinking water more too. He played today and is now napping. He seems to be trusting me more and more and likes to nuzzle my face and chin. I took today off from work so I could help him adjust. Of course tomorrow I have to go back to work. I am concerned leaving poor Felix all alone in the bathroom all day but I need to work as I don't get paid taking time off. Vet check and vaccination appointment for Felix on Wednesday at 8:30 am. Will come in late to work that day.

  7. Not sure how often but I have been going in periodically to check on Felix. I cleaned the litter box and he used it later. Still small amounts of urine. He is drinking filtered water and seems to be favoring the dry cat food this afternoon after eating a good amount of the kitten wet food. I will give him a new can of kitten food in another hour. My main concern is while I am at work tomorrow, he will sleep too much and not eat enough. Also he seems to have lost his miaow. Should that be a concern too? He was very vocal at the emergency vet yesterday.

Still waiting for our TDK kitty nurses to give some of their wonderful advice.

  8. SMM, it sounds like you are doing a wonderful job! At 6-8 weeks, I'm sure he will be fine on his own tomorrow (just remember to put the toilet lid down). Felix is so lucky he found you!

Posted 8 months ago by jcat #

  9. I wouldn't worry about the lost of the miaow. Chloe is 99% quiet until she is put in the car. Or occasionally when she really really wants my attention. Perhaps Felix has nothing to miaow about.. :) Sounds like you are doing a great job ...

  10. Felix definitely had his lucky day when he found you. I hope he stays healthy and has a happy ending!

  11. Thanks for all the well wishes! Thank you Jcat! Since you have fostered quite a bit I was hoping I would see your post of advice. First thing I thought about was kitten proofing the bathroom and I already have a habit of keeping the lid down. 2P, my first kitty didn't have a miaow until she was a over year old and then most of the time it was a quiet whispery miaow. Only when she was upset would she miaow a normal miaow. I guess I am overly concerned over this kitten as it is so tiny and just fur and bones. Until he fills out a bit I will continue to worry about Felix as he is so thin and fragile right now. He is a bit unsteady when he walks and needs to gather strength which I hope he will gain as he eats the kitten food. Also, Jcat, at what age is it recommended vaccinating the kitten? I am thinking it is too soon for Felix especially since he is under developed.

  12. SMM, at our shelter, we usually vaccinate at 12 weeks or when the kitten is ready to leave foster care and go into the kitten room, and go up for adoption. The main impetus for vaccination is when he might start coming into contact with other cats (or surfaces that might have been in contact with other cats) who might be carriers of viruses, etc. As long as he's in isolation in your bathroom, or just has contact with your two, who have obviously had all their shots, then it's not crucial until he's a bit stronger but check with your vet next time you see him.

Posted 8 months ago by jcat #

  13. That is what I was thinking Jcat, to wait on vaccinations till it was both stronger and older. The main concern is the kitten was outside and so the vet put in to test for FELV. My two are healthy and have their shots plus my two do not go outside except out on to my deck. I made an appointment with my vet because he will need that second dose of dewormer and I would like the vet to look Felix over. He has the scab from a possible burn and also I would like for the vet to make sure he doesn't have a URI as I have seen a little crusty discharge from one eye and he was holding his mouth open at the vet(that coukd have been because he was stressed from the short car ride to the emergency vet office).

  14. One other question..how soon can I clip Felix's claws? He seems to get stuck on his toy a lot and had quite a tumble tonight because of that. I Aldo have nice scratch marks on my hands and legs.

Posted 8 months ago by SylMiaFelixsMomma #

  15. Sorry, can't help you there, SMM. I don't clip my kitties' claws (because they're usually ex-feral and there's nobody else to hold them, lol) but check with the vet and he may even do them for you.

  16. Hi Karin...I'm not sure how wooded your area isbut I didn't know there was a problem w/coyotes. We've seen very few if any where we're at. And at the moment am only dealing w/one persistant & annoying raccoon. lol. I sure hope the mama didn't meet her demise w/the coyotes. Little Felix is adorable & what a nice surprise....another tuxie!!
Even when they're kittens, their spitting & hissing & growling can be pretty intimidating. That's all I get from Ms.Hissy. And her spitting can sound quite scary. lol. You might try feeding it alittle sliced deli chicken mixed in real good w/his food. Careful not to give a whole lot. I use to keep it on hand for a few kits when I needed to fatten them up a bit.
I also hink it's abit odd that the neighbor lady ws so quick to say it was a feral. Almost sounds like she may have known who it belonged to. Your such a sweet & caring person to rescue this little baby. I hope to can get him all fixed up & a furever home can be found for little Felix.

  17. Thanks for the suggestions Susie. When I first came to see the apartment, the property manager at that time informed that they had coyotes in the hills. He said one tenant would let her cat out and one night it didn't come back. Where I am at is near a natural wooded parkland deeded many years ago so that no one could develop the area with housing or businesses. We have coyotes that apparently are quite bold, there are red tail hawks that in rare occasions have been known to carry off a kitten, we have bobcats and mountain lions, owls and foxes all are known to kill cats. So it could be a very sad possibility that Felix's momma net an untimely demise at the hands of one of these predators and possibly what chased Felix into the apartment complex desperately seeking a place to hide. It was pure luck that I happened to be on my deck and saw him. I was actually thinking about how he must be feeling being locked in a bathroom of this very large giant. Could he be thinking what is worse, being outside doing what I wanted but starving to death and ending up a some predator's dinner or locked in a nice warm room with lots of food and water and a very nice soft covered bed to sleep in. From all the headbonks, nuzzling and purring Felix has shown me says he is very grateful to be alive and being taken care of. He already has my heart wrapped his furry paws (in addition to lots of scratches on my legs from his climbing around on me).

I have a vet visit for Felix on Wed and can ask her what she suggests to help Felix put-on weight and gain strength and muscle. I will see if Felix likes any human food like maybe some roasted chicken. I know Mia loves fresh roasted chicken.

Jcat I think I will wait on clipping Felix's claws and will look into a scratching pad for him. He is way too young and a bit fragile right now to be stressed out with having his claws clipped. I would rather he get healthy and strong first.

  18. A scratching pad is a great idea, SMM. Also, I suspect the vet will suggest Nutrical to help get him back up to weight. GD used it for Glen and I think she was pleased with the result -- hopefully she'll weigh in.

  19. While the kitten is in isolation you might give him a snuggle buddy. If you have a small stuffed toy he can have that would be great. Otherwise you can fill a sock with some rice and tie it up. It makes something he can snuggle to.

To help with your two cats being less hostile to the smell of the kitten try putting a couple drops of vanilla extract on all of them, your two and the kitten. That way they all have a similar scent and it will be on you two from touching them. It doesn't always work to lessen the hostility and anxiety cats have at smelling a new "intruder" into their territory but often seems to ease the situation some.

  20. Lol, I was just going to suggest Nutrical, Jcat.
Karin, they even make a special one for kittens. If you can't find that, the regular one will do fine. No cat of mine has ever liked Nutrical, but if you mix it in with some wet food, they never know it's there. Worked wonders for Glen.

  21. I would snuggle with him all day! lol well if if makes you feel any better, when I found jax he was that young. I got him on Saturday so I had to go to work on MOnday and I was a nervous wreck about leaving him. I put him in a carrier in my room with his food and a little litter box made from half a aluminum roasting pan because I didn't have anything else. I worried abut him all day long and even cried at work i was so distraught. Well, when I got home, he had some how gotten out of the carrier and that little itty bitty thing was on my bed sleeping like he owned the place. He was fine! So little Felix will be fine too. Just so he has something to snuggle with and something to bat around. He is new so everything will be fascinating.

Posted 8 months ago by schminken #

  22. Thanks for the tips. I will ask the Vet about some kitten nutrical. I am going to go buy a small stuff animal and will check into the rice idea. I might check online about something to cuddle with for young kittens. It is going to be s long day at work worrying about Felix being alone in the bathroom today.

Posted 8 months ago by SylMiaFelixsMomma #

  23. Aww Lucky Felix knows you rescued him and saved him, rescue kitties are the best. A long haired white kitty that I rescued from the North Carolina woods got into my lap every day and made bread while looking into my face as if to say "I'm going to thank you every day for saving my life".You're doing great SMM!!!

  24. awwww. I worried about leaving Luna and Willow alone too....

  25. ConCATulations on being specially selected by a tuxie bebe to be his foster meowmy. He will thrive in your care SMM.

  26. I cleaned Felix's litter box and he ate and played a little this morning. He seems to be getting a little bolder and has gone and checked out the rest of the bathroom. He also climbed on his covered cat bed and took a tumble which made me freak but I just said OMG. I cuddled him after that and he purred. He nuzzled and head bonked my chin and even lick the tip of my nose which of course melted my heart even more. He didn't like it when I had to take my shower but I talked softly to him before and after I took my shower. He hides in his covered cat bed when scared. When I left to go to work, I put his bed close to his food. As I drove to work I shed a few tears worrying as to if he will have the courage to climb out of his cat bed to eat and use the litter box. I felt sad and concerned that he is alone all day. As soon as I get off of work I will try to find a snuggle toy for Felix. I got into work and hour late due to feeding, cuddling and watching him play. I have photos and several videos of Felix now. I am leaning more and more to keeping him as how will my property mgr know since my cats all hide when someone knocks on the front door.

  27. Well....my lips are sealed if you decide to keep little Felix. :)

Posted 8 months ago by feral #

  28. Yeah we won't tell. HE's going to be just fine when you get home.

Posted 8 months ago by schminken #

  29. And when he gets bigger he will look like Sylvester so the apartment people will think it's one and the same cat. It's perfect!

Posted 8 months ago by GD #

  30. LOL at GD! SMM, I hope you can find a way to keep little Felix, I think he was meant to be with you.
