  3. On the other hand...

    Scenario 8:

Mark, a black boy, and Mary, a white girl, are attracted to one another and want to date.

1960: Mark is viciously beaten by a bunch of neighbors and Mary is ostracized.

2007: Mark and Mary go out, without more than one or two snide comments.

Scenario 9: Janet loves math and science and decides that she wants to take an advanced physics class.

1960: She is teased by all the other students, boys and girls, and the teacher often comments on how girls really can't do that kind of advanced math or science.

2007: Clark's health class taught that he's not alone or disgusting. When he comes out, most students don't think it's a big deal.

    Scenario 11:

    Miss Parker teaches history.

1960: Miss Parker is paid less than male teachers with less seniority and lower ratings, particularly because rumor has it that she's going to get engaged soon, which means she'll just leave to have babies.
2007: Ms Parker can go on maternity leave and come back to her job. If she's paid less than male peers, she has legal recourse.

  7. It's all a set of tradeoffs, definitely. More freedom often brings more abuse of those freedoms and more stringent societal standards often bring more abuse of those standards.

I'm not even sure that there ever was a "best" time to live in! We're all more or less shaped for the era that was most formative for us, and it's our own flexibility or lack thereof that determines how well we adapt to subsequent changes.

  8. I have a friend who's a bit older than I am (I think she's about 57 or will be) and she said to me "This is not the world I grew up in and I don't like it." I told her that was the dumbest statement I'd ever heard. Who wants time to stand still?

But she came of age at a different time than I did so maybe everybody of her era thinks that way.

I came up in the 60s and 70s so that's probably what shaped me and my ideals.

  9. Scenario 12:

Mark and Mary - two young people - are attracted to one another and want to date.

1960: If Mark is different race than Mary : Mark is viciously beaten by a bunch of neighbors and Mary is ostracized.
2007: No matter what race they are : Mark and Mary go out, Mary gets pregnant, both have drug and alcohol problems, and Mark leaves her for Cynthia. Behind his back, Mary has been sleeping with Rich, Jason, Robert, Edward, Liam, and a few other boys. Nether marry each other. Both marry other people, but after a short time are divorced, and Mary is dependent on welfare.

Scenario 13: Clark thinks that he might be attracted to other boys.

1960: Clark hates himself for being a disgusting perv and commits suicide.
2007: Clark is made fun of by fellow students because he's gay, gets harrassed terribly, beaten by others. He falls in love wth another boy, but is not allowed to marry because it is still considered 'immoral' by many small minds. He winds up being murdered by thugs who hate gay people.

All in all, we have come a long way, BUT we have a lot further to go, and let us hope not in the wrong direction.
