  2. MCW, sorry you have had to deal with all sorts of challenges while your Mum is in the hospital. It is good that she stayed over the weekend. Better safe than sorry at they say. Hope your Mum's surgery goes smoothly and is successful. Take care of yourself. Glad to hear you have a massage scheduled. Sounds absolutely heavenly. Hugs and purrs.

Ginnyincatsprings - I am so sorry about what happened to your mother-in-law. Too bad they have a statue of limitations on being able to go after the idiots. My grandmother went into the hospital to have a pacemaker installed and they postponed her surgery twice so that instead of her having the procedure on Friday, she didn't have it till MOnday morning. It was frustrating for her and she actually had a little bit of a panic attack while in the hospital (crying all night long). I was able to visit over the weekend. She seemed to perk up a little afterwards. Hugs and purrs to you too.

  4. The NHS can be fantastic, or it can be bloody awful. I have experienced bot, and it seems to me that the elderly are almost always in receipt of the "bloody awful". I'm so glad Mum has now had her op. and seems to be making a good recovery. I hope they keep her in long enough for you to get a good rest and that you get some good respite care when she does go home. Sometimes the post op. care at home leaves somewhat to be desired!

  6. Well, we're back from visiting Mum, and can report that she's very well, and has been flirting with her consultant surgeon!!! She's pretty sore, and on a liquid diet, but they were able to do the whole thing with an endoscope (it was an operation on her throat, for something called a pharyngeal pouch), so she's no external marks at all. Just a question now of monitoring her blood clotting levels until things are back to normal, and then she can come home.

This really does feel like a major hurdle overcome; after the events of the last year, I was convinced something would go wrong, but it hasn't, and suddenly things seem just that little bit more rosey.

To top the evening off, Mum insisted that Chris and I took ourselves out for a meal on her after our visit, so we did, and jolly good it was too. Just one tip : if you're having anything you'd eat with your fingers, please remember you've used the hospital's alcohol gel to clean your hands BEFORE you then lick your fingers - it really ISN't finger lickin' good!!

  7. Glad to hear the good news, MCW--sending love and purrs and prayers for you all. You should wash your hands before eating, anyway, didn't your Mum teach you that?

  8. Having already alcohol gelled them MMM, didn't think of it - that stuff is meant to kill just about anything (inlcuding taste buds...!)

  16. Glad all is going well. I'm sure your Mum told you never to lick your fingers and what were you doing eating with your fingers in company anyway :-)

  17. Polly's Mum - how the heck else do you eat chicken wings??!!!

One Popoki & Jo - yes, Mum is home safe as of this afternoon. Her clotting levels are still way down, but they wanted to discharge her asap as she's previously had a hospital acquired infection, and they didn't want to expose her to any unneccessary risks. So, they discharged her, but only because they were able to arrange district nurse support for the next few days, to administer an additional blood thinning agent by injection.

Shame then that the district nurse didn't turn up.

Lucky then that I was around, had the relevant number, and was able to chase this up. One DN despatched asap, and each department blaming the other for the error. Personally I don't care whose mistake it was, I'm just absolutely sick and tired of the NHS making these mistakes in the first place, and of being the one who has to run round like a prat sorting them out. I'm burnt out, stressed up and really down in the dumps...

  18. OK I'll allow chicken wings with fingers (although my Nan would have insisted on a knife and fork).
I also suffered with the NHS while my Mum was still alive. Thank goodness, for the last two weeks of her life I was on school holidays and was able to go to the hospital every day to nurse her, because the nurses were often "unavailable" to answer her urgent needs.
I sympathise thoroughly. To shock our American neighbours may I say "Keep your pecker up!"

  21. Yay for your Mom, looks like she'll be in tip top shape real soon. Too bad though you have to deal with all the incompetent health personnel. I am astounded of all the problems you have had with them, my appreciation to them has certainly dropped.
Hang in there and try to find some me-time for yourself!

  22. MCW
I too am having second thoughts about national health care.
So sorry you are so stressed out. I am sending positive energy your way. Try and do something for yourself, take deep breaths, close your eyes and just let those thoughts pass through. Try to do this as often as you can.
    Hugs and purrs
