  1. Did I see rain in Texas on the weather map this morning?? I know it won't ease the drought much, but maybe it will make a smidgen of a difference.

Today is Make a Difference Day! It's also Navy Day, and the Statue of Liberty is 120 years old!

Kitties are setting up a comforting buffet, stepping over the night shift kitties who fell fast asleep where they were last working! Today's kitties are wearing badges that say "I Make A Difference". You sure do, kitties.
    * * * * *
One morning, just before dawn, a man woke early so he could watch the sunrise over the ocean. As he walked along the beach he came across a young girl who seemed to be doing something peculiar. She was picking up starfish and throwing them into the sea - one after another. He asked her what she was doing.
"The tide washes up all these starfish and they can't get back by themselves" she said. "They will die in the sun if I don't throw them back into the water."
The man looked up and down the beach at the thousands of stranded starfish. He couldn't help telling her, "But there are too many starfish to save before sunrise. Why bother? You won't make much of a difference."
She paused for a moment, then picked up another starfish and threw it as far as her slender arm could manage. With a satisfied grin, she turned to the man and simply said, "I made a difference to that one."
The man stood in silence, considering the girl's youthful wisdom. Then, with a smile of his own, he reached down for a starfish...and tossed it into the sea.

  10. Paws up Peeps!

Morning from the house of knocked over lamps, throw rugs that have now been conquered, and who knows what else the crew has taken on during the night.

  11. LOL at AZ....I came downstairs to find an area rug corner folded back. There was a catnip toy underneath :-)

Flipped the rug back over, exposed the cat toy, and true to form, it was a Cat Magnet and had a cat kicking it within five seconds....

  12. Siobhan, btdt the crew have had their moments all night! Threats of living outside with the coyotes and javalina were just met with rolled eyes, lol!

Jack The Cat is Lost in AA Baggage at JFK
Karen spoke to the vet this morning... Jack is stable but will need treatment for at least the next 3-5 days. He does have fatty liver disease, which occurs when a cat hasn't eaten in a while. He is currently not stable enough to be operated on, and is being fed through a nasal tube. There's every reason to believe he's going to be ok, but he definitely needs to get healthier before he can fly back home. Karen is VERY confident he is getting GREAT care and she will be coming back to NYC to pick him up and celebrate very soon!!! Please keep your prayers coming... Jack still needs our good energy so that he will feel great soon!!!!

  13. I went to the apartment this morning and the good news is the banana I left out is still there and intact, so good chance it's something mechanical like an a/c or something I'm hearing and not mice. And I didn't hear any noises today. Indidnt hear the a/c box on outside my window, either. Will try and see if I only hear the noise when the neighbor has the a/c running.
I still had no power which was supposed to be turned on yesterday so I called the power company. Turns out I have to go flip a switch on the power meter and turn it on myself. Only thing is I have no idea where said meter is and since it's a three unit building, I hope I flip the right switch and don't turn off the neighbors' power!

One dog-sitting job got cancelled this weekend since the family wad going to Cancun and the hurricane is headed that way. The other just told me they have friends staying over who will watch the dogs, but I'm going to go there once a day to take them out. At least I'll make a bit of money that way.
I also just had a new potential client, a referral from a ling-time client, call me. I need to call her back and see what she needs. And I'm meeting with another new one tomorrow. Phew!

  14. Had a rude awakening this morning. It's dark, but the nightlight in the bathroom is good enough for me till I wake up a bit. So I'm drying my hair and suddenly there's a flash and a loud pop and the hair dryer shut off. The outlet was fine, as the nightlight was still charging but the hair dryer is shot. I had just noticed yesterday that the cord felt hot after use and when I looked at in real light it was practically severed! It had it's own circuit built in so that's probably why it didn't damage the outlet.
Poor Leela, who loves to watch me dry my hair, was a bit poofed herself!

  15. Yikes, Joan! Glad you're OK, but holy cowbells.

Posted 7 months ago by Kilroy #

  16. Joan, glad that you weren't burnt by the flash, had that happen with one hair dryer before and scared me too.

GD, should be able to tell which one is yours by the other two meters running (or turning on the meter), they should have told you that they would turn it on at the main switch and you had to do the residence.

  17. Oyy, Joan pleeze be careful...awww poor Leela and RIP hair dryer! So, from your post on the History Threads kits are serving Spam for lunch in honor of John Cleese's birthday...lalala spam, spam, spaaam! Me, just need a warmer for my java, it is chilly in brewtown but at leat the sun has finally come out! Now, found my coffe cup...just have to find my kit, Tux & out to the always purrfect patio...

  18. Love it Deb!

I am NOT staying late today. Today seemed to be the calm before the storm. Keeping a positive additude - no one will get the best of me. However, the calm does prolong the agony another day, sigh...

Posted 7 months ago by JoanfromNewJersey #

  19. LOL at the photo, AZDeb. Bathing a cat is my worst nightmare (never had to do it yet.) And it is actually rainy here in Lubbock, TX today...and it SNOWED for a little while (not enough to stick.) Gotta love the wacky weather around here.

  20. I had to have the neighbor help me find the meter which turned out to be located inside a door on the side of the building! Power is now on - yay!

No one has eaten the banana yet!!! I mentioned the mouse idea to XBF and he thinks it's the a/c. I'm going to have him investigate tonight. We are going over after work so he can install the toilet seat I got, a new shower head and a couple of towel hangers. He wanted to see the place, so I figure I'll put him to work :)

Posted 7 months ago by GD #

  21. Hooray for electricity and a helpful XBF, GD :)

Posted 7 months ago by Kilroy #

  22. Indeed, Kilroy! I can always count on XBF!

While the weekend dog-sitting this coming weekend was becoming a bit overwhelming, now it's disappearing on me. One couple cancelled because of the hurricane, and another had friends come into town who are now staying with the dogs. They felt bad, so are still going to have me come walk the dogs once a day, so I can make a bit of money. I was going to go furniture shopping this weekend, but with the cancellations and the $260 power fee, it's not looking like that's going to happen for a couple of weeks!

Posted 7 months ago by GD #

  23. GD.....Kudos to XBF...He always seems to be there when you have needed a "helping" hand over the year(s), or in various predicaments.

  24. Goodmorning all, it an overcast day with very very fine misty rain falling off and on. Airy is off cleaning oil off a beach and I'm about to go and enjoy a long shower and wash my hair without someone turning on the tap downstairs and freezing/scalding me in the shower.
Woah Joan, close call with the hair dryer.
GD, I must have missed what the banana post, what are you hoping to attract with a banana besides a passing chimp? I have found mice really can't resist peanut butter if that is what you are hoping to entice out.

  25. Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ! ! !
Apparently another container ship has run aground here. Early reports say it has run aground at the entrance to the harbour. Just how serious a grounding we don't know.
    http://www.sunlive.co.nz/news/17899-ship-grounded-on-mount-maunganui.html

    Please, no more oil.

    Posted 7 months ago by Moonshadow_NZ #

  26. Nooo! Why do they keep running aground there?

MS, I was hearing squeaking noises from the ceiling area and not sure if it was mice or the a/c since it was pretty continuous. I haven't seen any droppings, but want to make sure there are no mice, or they will need to have the exterminator come take care of that before I move in.
Anyway, my co-worker said when she had mice, her exterminator said to leave out a banana to see if anything would come eat it. I left it overnight and no one nibbled on it, so so far, so good. I left it there, so we'll see.
I don't like peanut butter and don't want to spend money on a whole jar of it to test for mice. Maybe GG has some I can borrow.

12P, XBF is the best! He's got his flaws, but he's always there for me!

  27. Phew! LATEST: A small container ship has refloated after it ran aground at the entrance to Tauranga harbour this morning.

Port of Tauranga operations manager Nigel Drake said the 135-metre Schelde Trader, which was departing the port, lost power between North West Rock and North Rock about 10.35am.

He said it has since refloated and was taken out of the harbour. It would return to port when it was safe to do so.

The grounding comes nearly a month after the container ship Rena hit the Astrolabe Reef off the Tauranga coast. The Rena remains on the reef as salvors try to pump oil from it.
